Texas Game Wardens Seize $100K at Bass Fishing Tournament

Recently at the Sealy Big Bass Splash on Sam Rayburn in Texas, the Texas Game Wardens seized over 100 thousand dollars of fishing boats, motors and trailers. Over a span of two days, the Texas Game Wardens, in a saturation patrol, looked at 300 boats, 243 motors and 100 trailers. Those Game Wardens were looking for stolen items hoping to return them to their rightful owners. When it was all said and done, 2 boats and 10 trailers were seized and the investigations are ongoing.

i thought the same thing! the dollar amount is always over estimated for headlines. chances are it was a couple of kitted out jon boats purchased 2nd hand or 3rd party. this whole thing makes absolutely no sense to be honest. the GW are chasing the people that purchased and not the people who stole or resold it. so basically the state of Texas just STOLE $100k worth of fishing equipment from people that payed for it, to return it to the folks that most likely already received an insurance payout for the stolen goods. complete waste of tax payer dollars...especially considering there were NO ARRESTS... YIKES!

Had a few questions about boating as a new owner and I approached one of our Texas game wardens. He had to be one of the nicest, professional, and friendly guys I had ever met. He walked me through each and every concern that I had, looked up regs for me, etc. Great guy.

Being a kid in Phoenix I had a lot of bikes stolen from me I think I had Six bike stolen from me before I was 12 years old gang of Mexicans would just run up on you push you off your bike and ride off one of them I got back because a man in a big four-wheel drive truck seen it happen he told me to jump in and we chased him down the dude freaked out jumped off my bike and took off running I said thank God because my parents were getting tired of buying me bicycles nowadays you can leave a huffy on the side of the road and a bum won't even take it

When buying or selling any big purchase item, that is used, I always get a photo of the other person’s ID and a bill of sale. If the other party doesn’t agree then the sale is off. Something about an “ounce of prevention”

Had an incident where a motor was stolen off a trailer, after being taken in for lower unit repair. Six months later the motor was recovered and returned to the owner whose insurance had already replaced it. Guy thought he could make a buck and sold it without informing his insurance company. Needless to say, the purchaser got busted with a supposed stolen motor. He did get his money back and all charges dropped, but never did find out what happened to the original owner.

First let me just say the Texas game wardens are the very best. Literally the nicest most helpful people you will ever meet. They are all about safety and preserving Texas wildlife. Even if you have a small violation and if you are respectful and honest most will give you the benefit of the doubt and a warning. Act like an arrogant knucklehead they will lower the boom. Because Texas was open during covid it seemed like we had a lot of thefts from out of state marauders and also because we are open we had a lot of people flood in from slave states to fish (and a lot of other things). And like any other place we have our fair share of homegrown knuckleheads. Good on the Wardens for recovering this property and shame on you if you are a thief.

I’ve seen theft happen while I was at a weigh in on Lake Fork several years ago. The tournament weigh in was at Axton’s and a lot of folks trailered in parking on the access road to Axton’s boat ramp. While the weigh in was taking place someone removed several sonar units off of boats parked along that road in broad daylight with a steady flow of passers by and no one noticed the thefts.

I had a 10 foot Jon boat, with a 3hp Johnson on it in 1978. When I used the public boat ramp I loaded and unloaded by hand from the side of the furthest dock. I carried the boat in the back of my pickup and all my gear plus motor was placed in it. I just got back from fishing and had put all my gear and motor on the dock. I picked up my 10 foot Jon boat and carried it to my pickup across the parking lot. When I got back to get my other stuff, I saw that someone had taken my 3hp motor. I looked and hollered, but it was nowhere in sight. Either someone put it in their vehicle while loading or unloading a boat or they just put it in their boat and drove off. Either way it was gone, so I called the police. I made out a report, but I never saw the motor again. I looked hard at every 3hp Johnson I saw, because mine had a small, but distinctive dent that I could recognize without having to read a serial number. The worst part was, that was the most reliable outboard I've ever owned!

Good luck on getting people to show up next year. Local town here had a big Christmas deal every year. Local cops decided to start road block safety checks every weekend. Attendance soon dropped off and local businesses lost a bunch of money.

Yes , does seem like a spoiler of a good time to have to go thru a process that seemingly could be done during registration/re-registration by simply requiring an in-person physical inspection at that time to check serial numbers. Even it meant registration inspection had to be done annually or at least bi-annually rather than every 5 or so years .

I always get a bill of sale to protect myself . It doesnt matter what I am buying . And After they write me a bill of sale , I ask to see their id . If for some reason they cant show me a id , I write down the plate number of the rig they met me with or the house address

Game wardens don’t operate like police! They work for the state and can do search’s with probable cause! Looking for stolen equipment is probable cause. FYI Game Wardens can stop, ticket are take you to jail anywhere in the state of Texas and like constables they can arrest city police anywhere in the state…. Game Wardens have a lot of power!

Game wardens have state jurisdiction and only need probable cause and looking for stolen equipment gives them rights other law enforcement doesn’t have! Game warden, State Police and Constables all have more power then local police and only answer to state judges. All 3 of these agencies can make traffic stops, take people to jail and can arrest locale police!

Game wardens in Texas are out of hand completely. I like cops just fine, but I have read too much about the over the top antics of the game wardens. They used to be fun loving, joking guys, but now they think they are the swat of the woods. I went duck hunting in 1967 and when coming out of the blinds and driving down muddy roads, a game warden was checking numbers of ducks. We opened out trunk and he started counting and he counted one too many. All of us said, WHAT, the warden started laughing and almost fell down. I don't see many of them laughing much any more.

Search warrants are not required for boats in U.S. waters. That law has been in effect since the creation of the Coast Guard in 1790.

These online selling platforms like Facebook Marketplace should require proof of title to allow listing. This gives AI systems at law enforcement agencies the heads up about the stolen property. Even if they list a bogus VIN, correlation gives them more than enough probable cause to check it out. And I will tell buyers, always check the VIN, because you could not only be facing a felony, but you will also be out that money that you now need for a lawyer as they investigate.

Seems like tournaments should invite wildlife officials to inspect the documentation and boats of all participants in order to reduce the likelyhood of law suits. They will be assured that everyone has a current license and that the boats have the minimum amount of safety equipment before entering the water. They should include that information on the applications for the tournament. It encourages participants to check their paperwork and boats before going go the tournament so they can avoid being fined.

Well, for one thing you don’t buy a boat or a trailer off of Facebook marketplace unless they have the title otherwise you are buying something that’s stolen. Same way with the car a four wheeler a side-by-side any of that stuff of course it’s gonna be stolen. It’s very rare that anybody is selling that kind of stuff, honestly there’s so many thieves out there now it’s easier to go to a bookstore and just buy it and pay full price to buy something stolen

I was fishing from shore one time, on a large and popular lake in my area. Would have been some time in May. I was chasing crappie and pike. One crappie rod, one pike rod. I was fishing a pier with a slight bend mid way and a tree at that bend that obscured line of sight down the entire 100 meter pier. I set my crappie rod down near the tree, and walked to the end of the pier to cast for pike. Less than 10 mins of casting, I return to the tree, and my crappie rod had been stolen. 10 minutes. 100 feet behind me.

That equipment will NEVER go back to the owner. It will be in the garage's of Texas game wardens, the way they look at it is the original owner got insurance money out of it, so its up for grabs. Or they will sell them and pocket the money.

Both of you are full of it, Game Wardens are not keeping any seized boats and motors. Boats are turned over to insurance companies or returned to previous owners who were not insured. Jeff, probably wanted to be a Warden but now just talks bad about them. Do an open records request and see what happened to all the seized vessels.

Well thats probably going to be the end of that tournament. Nobody is going to want to go if they are going to be harassed. And more than likely none of this stuff was stolen. Probably a few wrong or missing missing numbers on the paper work. I would be willing to bet that when they ran the numbers none of it was reported stolen. But they seized it anyway because they have to justify this huge expense.

im 68 had to retire from fishing helped out a guy at lake camanche gave him a few speedy shiners gave him some tips he had 2 others with him old ppl i put my tackle bag in my truck bed have a camper shell packed everything up went home no tackle bag 600 bucks worth of equipment they set me up one was an old lady she got my bag cant trust anyone nowadays so i gave it up cant afford to replace my equipment .i will be selling what i have left.

Well thats probably going to be the end of that tournament. Nobody is going to want to go if they are going to be harassed. And more than likely none of this stuff was stolen. Probably a few wrong or missing missing numbers on the paper work. I would be willing to bet that when they ran the numbers none of it was reported stolen. But they seized it anyway because they have to justify this huge expense.
