Today I’m heading southwest to the Texas Hill Country to visit some of the Highland Lakes and find some of the hot spots for Texas Wildflowers which are in peak bloom. If you watched my previous video, I drove east toward Waco and found the bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brushes, and other wildflowers to be at the peak of their season, so today I’m heading to the heart of the Texas Hill Country to see what it has to offer.
In today’s video we’ll visit Burnet and Lake Buchanan, and visit some awesome displays along the lake’s eastern shores. Soon after leaving Burnet, the characteristic hill country landscapes become apparent: rocky outcroppings, live oak and juniper trees, cactus, and of course the blue colors of Texas Bluebonnets. Our destination is Ranch Road 690 just a few miles up the road which runs along the eastern shores of Lake Buchanan
.
Bluebonnets are the dominant wildflower on this road and there are some impressive displays along the right-of-way. When Lake Buchanan is full there is water here but in a spring when the water level is low, a sea of bluebonnets replace the water. In the most impressive bluebonnet display along this road the massive fields of bluebonnets in the foreground are hard to distinguish from the lake water behind. Enjoy views from the highway and the lakefront neighborhood.
After returning to highway 29, we’ll cross the Bridge over the Colorado River and the beginnings of Inks Lake. From here we get a great view of Buchanan Dam to our right before ending the video at an area that is now fenced and controlled by the Lower Colorado River Authority but once allowed public access to a walkway out onto the dam. The building here once housed a restaurant and a public observation deck.
In the next video, we’ll head back out on the highway and over to Inks Lake and Park Road 4, be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!
