I think his soil is actually really bad. These large fields only grow mono culture crops which need to be sprayed with pesticdes. Wind will erode the land and blow of all light minerals. This kind of agricultural activity is only large scale low quality food production which causes all kinds of problems.

Turning plows give the highest yields,but no till gives good returns because of the greatly reduced inputs from land prep. That said,there is something so satisfying about plowing. Plowing also brings lots or arrow heads to the top of the ground in my area!

@@oobreefarms Do you see a yield increase, the reason I ask is we haven't plowed in 30 years, but plowed 1/2 a field a few years ago, got busy and never finished it, you can tell to the row where that plow ran, it's amazing after all these years it still shows up
@oobreefarms
@oobreefarms 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the yield increase since we plow at least once every 3-4 years. Some people will say it does increase yields and some will disagree. I do believe in grade increase due to less trash in the peanut crop when it's harvested. Our soil is sandy so we don't have a big compaction problem.

Why are you working with a plow in the field? When you plow the soil, large organic matter is lost. Have you tried Strip until tillage? is it not very common in the us tillage strip?
@oobreefarms
@oobreefarms 3 жыл бұрын
We plow to bury cotton trash to plant peanuts. Volunteer cotton is bad in the peanut field and the cotton stalks get in the peanut combine causing bad grades. I also use a strip till where I plant cotton I don't plow every year.

Even if you do get away with less fertilizer in no-till i think plowing is still worth it for farming peanuts. It helps with disease control, weeds and also gets rid of the previous years residue wich is cotton for us. Having volunteer cotton in peanuts is very hard to get rid of and you'll get alot of the foreign material in your peanuts during harvest.
