Texas Sheriff Fires Disgraced Jailer for Allegedly Sneaking in Phone for Inmate

Security footage shows a Texas sheriff firing Collin County detention officer Tyler Moody for allegedly sneaking a cell phone inside the jail for an inmate. "You're fired. You're no longer an employee here," Sheriff Jim Skinner said to Moody. "You've betrayed the trust of every citizen we have the privilege to serve." Moody is now behind bars at the same jailing facility.

The job is as hard or as easy as you make it. Your attitude dictates the kind of shift you’ll have. I’ve been working over 20 years in a very large county jail. Pay is very good. Benefits are even better. Do not take the job home. Do your time at work and have a stress free life away from work with friends/family. Don’t ever forget to be very firm when necessary, but just as fair. Admit your mistakes when you make them and always be humble.

We are only seeing less than 2 minutes of this Sheriff doing nothing more than carrying out the duties that he is supposed to do in his job. What I find alarming is the fact that seeing nothing more than this tiny clip is, on it's own, enough for most people to be so impressed that they immediately start making statements about how every single LEO in every county in the US needs to have officers exactly like him. Maybe he is a "good" guy and cop who follows the rules, but when did that become heroic? It's pathetic. I am a former correctional officer in Texas. I once trained a young lady and specifically told her that whatever you do, do not let these offenders convince you to bring any type of contraband into the prison. I think about 6 months later, I watched her being escorted out of the prison in handcuffs because she got into a relationship with one of the inmates and was bringing him pretty much anything he asked for, including a cell phone. It's just not worth having this charge on your record for the rest of your life.

I worked in a large county jail for 5 years and witnessed this conversation take place probably a dozen times. This Sheriff said it better than anyone I've heard. When an officer brings something to an inmate, they are called a DUCK. I worked along side several guys who I would never think they would do this, but they did. Each story was unique but all of them ended with the person getting arrested. Inmates promise big money for bringing something in for them and almost every time, they are the ones who rat the officer out. I hope they start showing this video to OITs in corrections/detention facilities.

When I retired from the military in 2014, I started working in corrections. This is a daily issue, and why I hardly trust anyone I work with. They usually find the officer or officer’s with financial problems, or going through a hard time in life, and use it to their advantage. They have anyone from a CO I, all the way up to warden’s and even higher bringing in contraband. The officers think it’s a easy $1,500 in their pocket. What they fail to realize is once they smuggle the first item in, they’re on the hook. If they say no, they will be threatened with being reported. It made me happy when he told him to take the uniform off

Here in NC, two people who once worked at a jail were incarcerated there. Whether they moved them later I have no idea, but that had to be humiliating to be arrested and jailed by your coworkers. The two COs were arrested for domestic incidents, which one of the ladies tried to recant, but it was too late, they'd alredy been fired because of the whole crack down on bad law enforcement officers in the wake of the George Floyd death. Its serious business when COs become bent or are accused.

That phone could be for anyone, and any crime can be committed with it because they can speak freely without recording. They are also not giving items because they are miserable....they are either manipulated by inmates much smarter than themselves and even sometimes gangs will use one of their own with a clean record to get the job and be an inside man. It's an understaffed position and many places will take what they can get.

If you know you’re busted, then fold and resign. Had he resigned, he would’ve been able to keep some of his benefits and they can’t fire him, which matters for future employment. Not sure why he thought he had a chance of keeping his job, but unless you think you’ve got a strong case to prevail in the hearing process, then you’re better off to resign. I refused resignation before (not as a LEO) only because I knew their case was bs, so got suspended instead. I won and kept my job. If I didn’t think I was going to win, I would’ve resigned. This guy isn’t too bright.

On the other hand, if 2 weeks ago he gave two weeks notice of resignation, AND the sheriff accepted that resignation, he MIGHT be eligible for SOME things, especially IF he signed a contract that stipulated such things and/or was a member of a union that had specified benefits on departure. c. So, if unaware he was about to be terminated and arrested until that moment, he might be better off being fired. If he instantly resigned he MIGHT have forfeited several protections. d. "and they can’t fire him" That's not true. You CAN be fired after submitting a resignation. Since the sheriff, in this case, would be firing because of employee faul,t the fired person would technically NOT be eligible for benefits. e. So, resigning and THEN being fired would pretty much end any chance of arguing you are eligible for benefits...unless a specific term of an employment contract said otherwise.

You know, as petty or as illogical it may have seemed, the sheriff asking the officer to take his shirt off first and foremost actually speaks volumes of his foundations and principles as an authoritative figure. We need more men like this, but they are rare nowadays.
