I’ll be honest, I’m on a carnivore diet, but when SHTF I won’t be worried about what’s the healthiest in my pantry! I’m going to be grateful I stocked a variety of stuff! I too have potatoes, flavored rices, pasta, Raman, crackers, oils, vegetables. ❤❤❤ your pantry looks fantastic.

I’m a keto girl so nearly ALL of these foods are off my list. It’s hard to can fresh lettuce. If I had to eat most of that- I would just go hungry. Everything you had I would only consume sardines, pumpkin, maybe canned tomatoes.

Hey Jill, Dora here from school. Since we live in Texas, I think I would cover that window to keep the sun and heat out of your room. I would not want to put canned goods in front of the window. If you couldn't cover up the window, then I would put things in front of it, that wouldn't matter about the heat, like your paper goods, etc. I have a very small room that my daughter calls the grocery store. It used to have a window years ago, but when my dad added onto the house, he took out the window. I try to keep all like items together, meats, vegetables, soups, baking goods, snacks, etc. I keep extra boxes of cereal in a tote box and I usually only purchase them, when they are on sale. My granddaughter sometimes benefits from me buying cereals on sale. She's almost 6 and loves to shop at Mamaw's or when I give her things to take home. lol

In 2018, something told me to store extra. I had a tiny budget. I worked hard on keeping what I use of my food supplies under $1 a day. I worked hard on it for years. I created recipes using only shelf stable ingredients. Every dinner recipe that I use is technically 4 calculated servings but I only divide it into 3 servings to give me more nutrition and eliminate good waste. Technically, every soup recipe batch that I cook on my meal plan is 2 servings but I Count it as 1 serving. I am single and live alone so it is a little easier. Now, prices changed so I do not have to buy. I do NOT shop for groceries every week anymore. I make calculated purchases based on refilling my supplies once or twice a month. I search for cheap or free ingredients to add to my supplies. I also do not have space to store certain things. Instead of storing 1480 cans of soup or jars of broth or cartons of stock, I have a compact system with ingredients to make 1480 batches of soup which is about one can. The cost of a batch of my soup is less than 15 cents a batch. That is one bouillon cube plus 2 cups of boiling water plus 1/8 cup of dry ingredients depending on the flavor and type of soup that I decide to prepare. And 3 years of soup equals 1095 batches. So I went a little bit overboard. Well, I also do Not eat soup every day so it is all good. For breakfasts, I have 30 different meals with 12 or more of each meal. I do not eat breakfast everyday. I practice intermittent fasting and do more of a light brunch so I have enough of together the breakfast or lunch options combined to last years. I also have other supplies for dinners.

I froze another 5 quarts of green beans today and I'm making another Walmart run in the morning for dried and canned goods to put away. Something I learned the hard way; any canned fruit or soup or soda, ketchup, pickles...any product that contains high fructose corn syrup degrades and since it is a man-made chemical it corroded my stored cans of fruit. Also, we have a shelf in our garage that got about 100F for 2 days last summer; the hfcs made the soda's taste BAD. My research said they might have become poisonous. The sweet pickles just turned to mush. It's not recommended to keep products with this additive or the false sweetener aspartame for more than a year and definitely don't let it get hot!

I am using a very, very small bedroom as my backup pantry (My daughter, calls it the grocery store.) And I have labeled the front of my cans with a sharpie, the month and year of the best buy dates. It makes it so much easier on the eyes, when I do my rotation or if I just need to see what is expiring soon. I have put all like items together; meats, vegetables, soups, baking goods, snacks, etc. Then I have an area for overflow, when I accidentally buy stuff I didn't need yet. I am loving mine! And I keep a well stocked kitchen pantry as well.

spare room also but it has now overflowed into a closet, under a bed and shelves outside of the closet. I have only been canning for 2 years but it was shocking how fast I have gone through my tomatoes. My weak spot is water. I can't leave it in a barrel in upstate NY, it would be frozen solid and possibly split whatever it was in. I have about 18 days of water. If my power goes out, I have 3 days worth of a whole house generator (generac) so I'll have to hop to it and use my power (own well) to fill up every thing that will hold water.

People don't realize how much food is needed for 1 year. It's constantly stocking of the pantry when things go on a great sale. We go thru over 1200 quart jars that we can a year (veggies, chili, BBQ pulled pork, sweet italian sausages, pork,chicken, beef, soups, tomatoes and tomato sauce). PLUS, mylar bags full of dinners (I freeze dry leftover meals), veggies, fruits, eggs, mini ice cream balls, and freeze dried broths, freeze dried tomato powder, freeze dried gourmet mushrooms (we grow our own mushrooms), freeze dried super green powder, freeze dried beet powder. Plus all the rice, dried beans, lentils, pasta and all the canned beans, canned veggies, solid white tuna cans, canned salmon, mackeral, clams, sardines, kippers, smoked oysters, vienna sausages, spam, corned beef hash and anything we don't grow ourselves like ketchup, mustards, soy sauce, bbq sauces, japanese sauce, marinades, vinegars, mayo. PLUS our 2 stand up freezers and 3 full size refrigerators/freezers full of meats, bacon and trays of freezer meals. We have 11 family members....it takes a lot of food. Don't forget the pets too. I make double batches every 2 weeks for the pets. Half the batch is put in the fridge and freezer for 2 weeks of meals and the other half gets feeeze dried so they have food too for a year. Oh and water supply and water filters for our filtration systems (reverse osmosis, Zero Water and water distillers) so we have pure clean safe water. Boxes of tea bags, vacuum packed coffee beans, freeze dried instant coffee, instant decaf tea (no sweetner), coffee creamers, 100 lbs of sugar, 25 gallons of pure raw honey, molasses (to make brown sugar), 200 lbs wheat berries, frozen yeast and vacuum packed yeast, organic bread flour, pancake mix dry, grits, corn meal, cake mixes, unsweetened cocoa powder, peanut butter powder, organic coconut flour, ghee, canned butter, frozen butter, lard, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil and more. Can't name it all. It takes a lot of food.

In a situation where we might would have to solely depend on what we have in our house...it's great to have a variety of choices to some degree I would think. How did you figure how long your supply would last you guys? I will do some searching to see how much of each category I would need to last me for the year. Always helping...thank you. Jesus bless.

Having some, is better than having none. It does take some time, to stock up. I have been working on mine for well over a year, but have a pretty good stock now. And if for some reason something happens to me, the family won't have to go to the store right away.

It helps a lot to go in bout once a month to shake and turn the can. Otherwise, the milk can settle and separate. It doesn't taste good for drinking, but works for cooking.

Looks like you need to can up some more tomatoes:) I think different drinks are important, especially like powdered Gatorade for the electrolytes, tea kool-aid just for something to taste good, I am saving for a freeze dryer it's going to take awhile, I have put away vodka because it has a lot of uses where do you get that can butter I don't like gee and have thought about canning butter I know it not approved but I don't understand why, if you can it like meat just a ideal God bless
@Bloodhoundjed1
@Bloodhoundjed1 Жыл бұрын
We still drink kool-aid at our house, so I keep extras of kool-aid packages and sugar, plus I have tea as well. I do need to stock up on more Gatorade. We like the individual packages to add to water bottles, as we will take them on the go. So need to find more of those.

I may have missed it, but did you mention rice? Rice and beans make a complete protein when paired. The combination will give you an inexpensive protein source that also delivers calories, depending upon how much one eats or how it's cooked.
