When are you gonna realize that older stadiums like Texas Stadium had better site lines (for most part) ? Fans were close to the action? Not a bad seat at Texas Stadium!

Back in the '70s, Cowboy's fans would say that the reason the roof was unfinished was so that God could look down on his favorite team.

The luxury boxes at the top of Texas Stadium weren't initially there when it was completed in 1971

Also, regarding Jerry World, it is DELIBERATELY designed so that one team has to look directly at the sun during the opening 2nd half drive of a late afternoon football game in December. Everyone knows this, so that factor goes into the calculations regarding the opening coin toss.

ive been to a few cowboys games in the old cowboys stadium. they were fine, the sun wasnt really an issue. the new cowboys stadium (will never call it att stadum) is still a classic, i saw 2 games in their this season and it still excites me to be there every season. fun fact, there is a huge underground "city" under cowboys stadium. were all the workers, trucks and offices are. wild stuff

"Protect the fans from the Texas heat." HA! You wouldn't have said that if you'd ever watched a game there in August or September. The roof would only protect the fans from rain, which was moot if were windy. Texas Stadium amplified the outside temperature. So, if it was 90dg outside, it'd be 110dg inside. 30dg outside, 10-15dg inside. It could be odd for sure, but it was overall an awesome place to see a game. Not a bad seat in the house and night games were magic. I miss it to this day.

Shield from the heat? Maybe if the roof sat adjacent on top the stadium to allow better airflow. But no breeze/fresh air could get in. The roof trapped the heat.

I had volunteered to serve drinks and make nachos a few times there at Texas Stadium, which their nacho cheese is add water to a disgusting powdered cheese. From Cowboy games to high school playoff games. Speaking of..one time, my high school varsity football team made it to the playoffs for the very first time since like forever, and they got to play over there. Despite, the big hole on the roof, it was 32 degrees out there (which at times, we do get freezes as early as November). We were freezing, even the band in their uniforms said that they were freezing, but still had a great time there. Fast forward to 2008, I went with my friends to a monday night Cowboys v. Eagles game on their final season at TS. That's when I found out this place start to get seedy and dilapidated. There were mountains of cardboard boxes, trash, and leaking water all over the concourses of the stadium. I know it seems bittersweet for lots of longtime Cowboy fans about this stadium because of their fond memories. Although, I love the outlines (especially the roof that the now AT&T Stadium is trying to imitate along with the retractable roof) and the structures of the overall stadium, but it was time to put the so-called "God's Place" out of misery. There was a early video rendering of AT&T Stadium back in 2004, were the retractable roof was gonna open diagonally, but for some reason, they decided to have the roof open horizontally like how it is today. I tried Google Image search for it, I can't find it. So, I'm guessing the early rendering was scrapped.

AT&T Stadium’s retractable roof setup, when it is open, was designed to mimic Texas Stadium’s appearance. They also determined in the mid to late 90’s that the roof of Texas Stadium wouldn’t be able to accommodate a retractable roof due to the roof being built as an independent structure from the bowl and rest of the stadium.

I went to Texas Stadium many many times. I saw everything there from Cowboys games to SMU games with Eric Dickerson & Craig James, to all kinds of concerts (Madonna, NKOTB, Paul McCartney). I even saw Kerry von Erich beat Ric Flair there for the world title in 1984. During the 80s the Cowboys often had trouble selling out Texas Stadium (the fans, used to championship level football every season, actually REJECTED a lesser product). So it was usually easy to just buy cheap tickets off of scalpers along the bridge over the highway. Texas Stadium looked good on TV but was a total dump. It had the partial roof but no climate control inside, so what ended up happening was it would be either HOTTER than the heat outside, or COLDER than the cold outside. That's what happened in the 1993 thanksgiving snow game (I was there). Where the uppermost luxury boxes were, there used to be 20 foot gap between the top of the upper deck seats and the bottom of the roof. You used to be able to look outside the stadium from that last row. It also allowed natural wind patterns to go thru the stadium. But year by year, Jerry would add boxes wherever he could find usable space in the stadium. Once they closed that crack at the top, the air inside the stadium became much more stale and still.

Why can't they just build the roof separate from the actual stadium? Constantly building and demolishing is so inefficient and a burden on the tax payers.
