Texas Tarpon Fishing

Tarpon fishing for Texas tarpon on south padre island. Targeting large migrating tarpon using Pen Spinfisher V 6500 reels. Tarpon migrate from Mexico up the Gulf of Mexico and up the entire Texas coast. Anglers will chase after them using fly rods, spinning outfits, and conventional gear. My little brother and I tried our luck with some monsters in hopes that we would get lucky. Other species that can be caught off the jetties are snook, trout, mangrove snapper, kingfish, spanish mackerel, grouper, jacks, and many more. We caught some fish, lost some fish, and had a great time.

Lol u say the first one was 300 pounds but the biggest tarpon ever caught was 286

Nice video! I grew up in the Valley (former Sharyland Rattler) and I enjoy seeing the footage from SPI and Arroyo City. What were you guys throwing at the tarpon? I'm guessing one of the DOA lures. How far off the jetties are the tarpon when you hook them typically? Wondering how far I would have to cast a fly to have a chance. I'm going to make a run down to the land cut later this summer and would love to hook a tarpon!

Thank you very much! We were throwing baitbusters and a storm swimbait that I found online. The distance they sit varies a lot! It all depends on the day. My buddy hooked up on a fly earlier that day, so I know it’s possible.

Hey Tj! I hear you... there are lots of choices out there. More than brand, what I would focus on for tarpon is finding yourself a rod that's got enough length to cast off the rocks (say around 8ft) plus enough girth to deal with something that's pulling pretty hard (say rated 40lb test+). If you get both of those down, you should be in a good place! To your original question, we're currently throwing a Shakespear and a Gloomis (very different in price, both working just fine).... don't feel like you need to spend a lot of money to get started!

What pound test of braid do u guys recommend for tarpons

Definitely 50. You don’t really need that for the fight, but you have to set the hook hard to get it to sink into their touch jaw. My hook-up to landing ratio is a lot higher when I can really set the hook hard.
