This should have been a hit for him 15 years earlier had he not been unjustly put in prison for having 2 joints in 1960, just after this song was originally released. A condition of his parole was to avoid bars and thus gigs. It took him 15 years to get the song back on the charts and his career back on track. This is why the song sounds very old for a 1970s hit. He fought the good fight. I teach at a high school in Phoenix and I have students that are fans. Rock on Freddy!!

Back when this song came out, it was inevitably playing on a jukebox in an old bar in our town, the brick building first built as a blacksmith shop before 1920. My late cousin and I would stop in there sometimes on late weekend nights to get cold draft beers, and this song was probably played the most often. Hearing this tune reminds me of the good times with my cousin, who died way too young. He also had his own band, although it was mainly classic rock and roll and oldies.

Freddy might just be the ultimate entertainer. He has always and forever been a hell of a good guy. I was living in Las Cruces in 75-76 and hung out in the 70/80 truck stop on the west end of town. This song was played almost non-stop on the jukebox through the midnite hours.
