Nick is adorable. I hope has a chance to mate and raise a couple of Nick Jr's!!
@TexasBackyardWildlife3 жыл бұрын
We think he's fun to watch. We wish he would bring his mate here but, sadly, he hasn't, and he didn't come back to his box last night. He disappears around this time every year and we assume he's off helping his mate with nesting and raising a family. We won't see him again until November.

Nicky is a special night hunter

Dan has a couple of cameras trained on Nicky's favorite hunting spots right now, and it's surprising how frequently we catch him. He's fun to watch. Flies in to his perch at about 50 mph and always 100% sticks his landing - no wobble at all.

Couple of my local observations on schreechers. Obviously they'll take a mole that's above ground but I've also seen them hone in on the sound of moles tunneling and then landing in digging immediately. Seems around 10% success rate. My scheechers spend about a week and a half specifically in my immediate yard and neighbors' yards, then they seem to rotate to a different patch of their territory. They'll be gone for at least two weeks and then rotate back. I notice that because... also have flying squirrels and they seem to rotate opposite the owls. I do not ever see squirrels while the owls are around. Within two nights after the owls rotate out the squirrels are back. The owls come back and the squirrels vanish.

@@yodieyuh My daughter and son-in-law moved back to his hometown from here in Central Coast California. They live an hour north of Tampa. I'm hoping to visit this fall, and see some of the countryside. I'll mention this to my daughter, & who knows, maybe I can hear screech owls while up there. Around here, there's horned owls that I get to hear occasionally.

We have one that comes and goes in our box. Screech is now back here it is winter, sometimes a lot of snow on the ground, and I wonder what can it eat? Could it find roosting small birds and get them? Would love to find out!
@TexasBackyardWildlife2 жыл бұрын
Nicky, the screech owl who lives in one of our boxes each winter, sometimes catches little birds and brings them back, but when we see him hunting it usually seems to be bugs. Once he brought back a small snake. With snow on the ground, bugs would be out of the question.

Wow! We missed that. Nicky likes to hunt down at the water bowl. Very cool to see it live.

I hear one every night around my yard but can't find it. It sounds like its on my roof!!! Lol could it nest up there? Or at least hangout up there? Any tips ? I have a good camera but only for daytime. I guess I should by a nightcam... Any suggestions on a cheap one?
@TexasBackyardWildlife2 жыл бұрын
We hear them calling at night and we love the sound of their ghostly little trills. I'm sure a screech owl might perch on your roof for a while at night. We use Dahua security cameras, which switch to infrared in low light and are motion activated. They're not hugely expensive, but they take a lot of setting up. Here's a link to some info on our website: texasbackyardwildlife.com/information-about-our-cameras-and-set-up/

by the size of this owl it looks like a flammulated owl. which i think is very similar to the screeching owl only a lot smaller
@TexasBackyardWildlife2 жыл бұрын
It's an eastern screech owl. A gray morph. We don't have flammulated owls in central Texas (according to Cornell's All About Birds). The red morph screech owls look a little more like flammulated owls than the gray morphs.

What kind of cameras are you using? We had a red morph owl in our box for Jan and Feb. Now we have that one and a gray morph. Maybe next year I'd like to get some kind of camera in the box.

We use Dahua security cameras, Jane. Here's a link to some information on our website: texasbackyardwildlife.com/info-about-our-cameras-set-up/ . Send us an email at texasbackyardwildlife@gmail.com if you have any questions. We have a camera on in a box watching a gray morph screech owl on our live stream at the moment (during the day). He left for 2 days last week and we were sure he was gone for the year, but then he came back. He'll probably leave again soon, but if he's still there, he'll be on the live stream.

Great horned will eat just about anything they can catch. Including other predators owls/hawks etc, they rule !
