They truly are. They are smart, they are curious, and they're very sweet (unless you're abusing them). They jump up onto our laps on the deck so they can explore what's on the table. They know us and recognize us, and we know and recognize them. The relationship we have with the raccoons is totally different from the relationships we have with the other critters.

They're very smart, too. A Neighbor used to leave her garage doors slightly open, and fall asleep. Raccoons would go thru them to the back of the property thru her place. She moved. One night we thought someone was knocking at our front door. We opened the door, and a family of raccoons were on the steps growling and hissing as tho' asking WHY the neighbors doors were shut. 😊 Funny creatures. We have security cameras set up all over our property so that we can watch the wildlife. We created this den out of a huge hollow log and put a camera in it when we were setting it up. The raccoons and foxes constantly explore everything - they're extraordinary - and we knew it wouldn't take long for them to figure out that the log was hollow and would make a safe, dry home. @@TexasBackyardWildlife This behaviour is common in meerkat families too. Supposedly, it helps them to avoid large predators. Fleas and ticks is a good hypothesis too. My guess, it is both and maybe something else.

I want to talk about the “jackhammer” behavior as the raccoon kits were nursing.....this is a very common mammalian nursing behavior! Some may hammer really hard (lambs, kids [goats], foals, deer, calves, and raccoons, etc) and kittens and puppies (domestic and wild) push and scratch as they nurse. Why?? _Because they’ve drained that breast and they want more milk!!_ When the babies, push, claw, or hammer, more milk production is stimulated, and they get to keep filling those bellies! When they were infants, my sons actually pushed against me from time to time when they were nursing, but they did NOT jackhammer, lol!
