This is a great idea if you have water. Many Texas cities are on severe water rationing that forbids any outside watering and many of us have dry wells. It's a very sad time for the trees.

Hall leafs of my apple tree turn to brown and became dry that happened at the beginning of spring and now developing new leafs is that because watering or what? Thanks

Use a moisture meter for a more accurate measurement. Rapid test moisture meters sell for less than $20.00 and don't require batteries. The problem with the screw driver method is the it can lead to improper watering.What if my soil contains rocks just below the soil resulting in the screw driver only going an inch or more deep. i.e. hill country. What if I have sandy soil which drys quicker? The use of an inexpensive moisture is a much better way of accessing soil moisture.

Here in the UK, we learned how to keep our gardens watered well in 1976, that was called 'the long hot summer'. We used bath water, washing up water, even laundry water if you used environmentally friendly laundry soap. In New Zealand, my aunt used nothing but household grey water on her vegetable garden that fed her whole family and had lots of veggies to spare that she donated to old folks homes Americans, please learn to be economical with water, use a plastic dish to wash pots in and water your trees with that, too. You can collect rain water in large 55 gallon containers from your roof. Never use a hose again, you're killing the world.

People need to use grey water, water from your shower or bath.. Just because it's touched your skin the trees don't care. That water is just going straight to the sewer system..
