I just had this idle surge after replacing a bunch of original parts (breather chamber, PCV, IAC valve, intake and TB gaskets, coolant transfer tube o-rings, injector seals, knock sensor, etc.) on my 98 Civic's Y5 engine (CVT). Here's a few things I learned. Maybe it'll help someone else with their situation. Used the Lisle spill-free funnel kit to make sure I bled all air out of my coolant system. In doing the above work, I had to do a complete drain of the system (including pulling the block drain plug), so the entire cooling system (block, head, all heater plumbing, etc.) was essentially full of air when the time came to refill with coolant. Once I refilled the system, it took over an hour of idling and multiple fan cycles for the system to completely burp all the air pockets. During this process, occasionally rocking the car up and down helped dislodge bubbles, as well. I also serviced the throttle body for the first time in 22 years. The engine side of the throttle plate, and all internal passages, were filthy. I cleaned the throttle blade and bore w/red Scotchbrite and solvent until new again, taking care to remove only the crud, and no aluminum with it. So at this point, minus the crud buildup, the TB is back to bypassing proper airflow around the throttle plate. This bump in airflow also confused the computer at initial startup. Idle bypass air screw adjustment: was originally sitting at about 1 full turn out from seated. After TB cleaning, 1/4 turn out from seated was all that was needed to put bypass airflow back to where the computer wanted it. IOW, after cleaning the throttle body, the engine didn't require as much additional bypass air from this part of the system. Beyond the above, I pulled both leads off the battery, clamped them together for an hour, then reconnected them to battery. I read this somewhere online - one of the many different "procedures" people use in an attempt to reset the computer. Then turn ignition key to run position for a couple seconds. Then I started the car and left it alone for a full hour to relearn idle. Was interesting to watch the tach, and how the computer kept adjusting RPM to sort itself out. After that hour, the idle still surged very slightly, but after a couple of additional drive cycles, it's idling rock steady and the car runs like the day I drove it off the dealer's lot.

I just rebuilt the transmission, and replaced the engine solenoid Andy Transmission solenoid. But the engine still tumbles a little bit and so I'm not completely happy. I replace the motor mounts as well. Still I'm hoping to get better gas mileage out of it. I was averaging 14-15 miles per gallons. It used to average 24 miles per gallon (32 hwy).

I'm pretty sure it's my manifold gasket but I'm having problems getting it out. I want to make sure that's the problem before I get too deep into it. That clamp that holds it onto the engine is a pain in the butt. Those bolts tend to wear down, and rest, and you will need a standard set to find that sweet spot where it fits the Bolt 9/32 or whatever it is. I have three bolts broken off at the manifold, fortunately there's enough to grip onto to get them out of the engine. I just don't want to get too far and not be able to fix the problem or find out it was something else. My car's been sitting for 2 years, every time I fix something something else would be the problem as usual

Troubleshooting issue, been looking all over forums for weeks, found some tips but still can't narrow it down. 2000 Honda Civic LX, with JDM D15B(non-vtec) swap, automatic transmission. Symptoms, when warm(not cold), coming to a stop sign idle drops to 100-200rpm, pressing on accelerator it pops back up to 700rpm. On the highway cruising, idle wants to drop randomly a few hundred rpms. Almost wants to stall, press on accelerator just a bit more it recovers. Replaced intake gasket, checked timing, replaced MAP, replaced IACV, topped off coolant, bled coolant. Did various idle adjustments, still unsuccessful. Has a header leak, so I'm thinking it might be a vacuum issue. Will be addressing that, but it wasn't acting like this even with the headers leaking. Just received a throttle-body gasket, in case it needs to replace. Replaced fuel filter, fuel injectors, fuel pump main relay, I'm thinking it could be; 1. Vacuum leak 2. Fuel pump 3. Transmission solenoid Open to any ideas on what I should try first, or if you know what has worked on any issues you've found in the past.

Does does the the IAC valve run off coolant. I know it is there to heat the throttle so it does not freeze up. but is that valve not controlled by a servo motor, or is it some sort of hydraulic thing? It does sound like the fast Idle is controlled fully by coolant.. Reason why I am asking is I get white smoke only when idling with no check engine lights and valve lashes adjusted. Looked it up and a forum mentioned: "Default Re: 2000 Honda CRV smoking at idle whtie smoke at idle and just after pulling away from idle, exactly what i had when my Idle air contrl valve gasket had gone hard and failed! This gasket is repsonsible 2 things, the IAC valve, but also the seal between the housing, for letting coolant into the throttle body walls to assist with warm up, and if it fails like mine did, ityou end up with a coolant channel exposed to the sucton side of the throttle plate, and therfore, high suction (low manifold pressure at idle) causes it to suck hard and pull coolant into the intake. Another stupid design!" So I was temporarily going to bypass the water hoses to the IAC valve to see if the smoke goes away. Yes I am expecting a bad idle but without white smoke. If it goes away I will know it is the IACV gasket.

I have just wiped and cleaned a throttle body on my Accord 2.4 2011 now I have idle issues - the lowest rpm I get while idling is 840 and it is constantly fluctuating between 840 and 1,100 rpms. I just wonder what could possible go wrong that makes now revs go up and down keeping the lower value pretty high at 840? The reason I went and cleaned the throttle body is that my air intake tube cracked and I had to install a new one and cleaned mass air flow sensor as well.

I have a Gen. 8 , 2011 Civic and when idling with the A/C Blowing the engine idle will shudder hard as the Compressor kicks on , I suspect that it could be a poor fuel , because it seems to vary from fill-up to fill-up , so possibly to much ethanol or water in the tank from bad gasoline ?

Did you ever find a solution for this? Sounds similar to what I am having issues with.

Can you use Carb Clean to clean out the Fast Idle Thermal Valve?

I haven't checked all of these but I have this problem where my idle is low and sometimes the car cuts out but then I tilt the accelerator cable downwards and it works fine for the time being but what can the issue be can it be related to this aswell

I have a little 95 civi EX manual transmission. It idles when start up seating, or stop at at light. When speeding it doesn’t do that. What should I do about that? Follow those steps you gave here ?? Please give me an idea, I’m new to this. Or just take it to the mechanic and let them deal with it?

@@xxd4rkxm4gicxx39 hello 👋. Yes it still does. I have to replace the Air control valve see for that helps. Haven’t done it because I had to get the head and gaskets done.

I wouldn’t say it’s a new thing. Look at the hot rod and muscle car days.. block, valve covers, differentials etc were common cosmetic modifications

So I just switched to a 3.5 intake manifold on my 3.0 and my rpm’s sit at 2k rpm in drive & bounces from 1-2 in park continuously, could anybody point me where this might be messing up?

So we have a 99 crv that wants to almost/die after coming to a stop light, or coming to a stop. it idles around 700, timing is good, new plugs, distributor, wires. So are we looking at the IAC or TPS?..or what?

I just cleaned my Idle Air Control Valve on my 99 CR-V and am experiencing the same issue - idles great until I come to a stop or am rolling without accelerating. It wasn't happening before cleaning and I'm about to try the idle relearn procedure tomorrow + bleed the coolant

Same issue with my 99 CRV. I replaced the IAC and it got worse. Reached the end of my abilities and it’s in the shop now

@@jambangoni @Venumousll Reporting back in: I jacked the car up and used a Lisle Coolant Funnel (Part #24680) and bled the coolant system of any air bubbles. I just let the car idle with the front end jacked up for 20 minutes. Took a test drive and the car continued to almost die out at idle when coasting/coming to a stop sign. I did Honda's Idle Adjustment Procedure and that resolved my issue. I used a scan tool to reset my PCM/TCM, but the Hayne's manual does not specify using a scan tool or even having the reset the anything before doing it. From the Hayne's Manual, Page 1-30 Sect. 28: Engine idle speed is the speed at which the engine operates when no accelerator pedal pressure is applied, as when stopped at a traffic light. The speed is critical to the performance of the engine itself, as well as many subsystems. Before checking or adjusting the idle speed make sure the CHECK ENGINE light is not on, the air cleaner and spark plugs are in good condition, the PCV system is operating properly and the ignition timing is correct. Connect a hand-held tachometer in accordance with the tool manufacturer's instructions. Set the parking brake firmly and block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Place the transaxle in Neutral (manual transaxle) or Park (automatic transaxle). Start the engine and run it at 3000rpm until it warms up to normal operating temperature (the cooling fan comes on), then allow the engine to idle. Stop the engine and disconnect the electrical connector from the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. disconnect the EVAP purge control solenoid. Start the engine with the accelerator slightly depressed and stabilize the idle at 1000 rpm. Slowly release the accelerator and allow the engine to idle. Make sure all accessories are turned off and the radiator fan and air conditioning are not operating. The idle speed should be: 480 (+/- 50 rpm) If the idle speed is too low or too high, remote the cap and turn the idle adjust screw to obtain the specified idle speed. Make changes slowly in 1/4-turn increments only. Turn off the engine and connect the electrical connectors to the IAC valve and EVAP canister purge. Remove the 7.5 amp BACK UP fuse from the underhood fuse block for ten seconds. This will clear any trouble codes from the ECM memory. NOTE: Unplugging the BACK-UP fuse also cancels the radio preset stations and the clock setting. Be sure to make a note of the various radio stations that are programmed into the memory before removing the fuse. Start the engine and allow the idle to stabilize for one minute. Note the idle speed on the tachometer and compare it to that listed on the VECI label or in this Chapter's Specifications. If the idle speed listed on the VECI label is different than that listed in this Chapter's Specifications, use the specification shown on the VECI label. I used my scanner to read the RPMs and I did a 1/2 turn of the throttle screw to get from 450rpm to 750rpm. Currently idling around 750-800 when at a stop. Hope this helps anyone out there reading it!

@@EricGlowacki1 very helpful, thank you. Last I heard, the mechanic had not figured mine out yet so I’ll give this a shot when I get it back. Mine was doing the same thing wanting to die whenever I let off the gas pedal

I took the throttle body off and cleaned and adjusted a few things. Then took off the plate going to the fast idle, and the plastic piece that screwes inward was almost unscrewed completely. I took it out cleaned it valve/ spring and replaced it and screwed the plastic piece hand tight and now it actually idles better at a stop
