I miss the blackberries I had, but don’t miss the thorns! If I get any more they’ll definitely be thornless. For now I guess I’ll just have to eat all the wild ones I come across. Thanks for the proverbs quotes and scriptures. If there’s one thing I desperately need it is wisdom!

Alan, another great video on blackberries. I learn something every time you make one. I have one question, what is the life expectancy on plants in wicking tubs. Mine have been in the tubs for 5 years now and they seem to be doing ok, but it looks like they are not producing the number of new canes like they used to. I do water and fertilize them regularly. Thanks
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
From everything I have read and researched… Cultivated blackberries like these have a lifespan of between eight and 15 years. I noticed, when mine were in the ground, that at about seven or eight years, mine started declining in production and vigor. Five years is not very long, so I think yours may not be petering out yet. I don’t think tubs, or containers will affect the longevity of the plant, but I’m just really not sure.

I had one of my natchez blackberry store bought shrubs I cared for 1+ years and its been cut in half. It grew more leaves than it did most of the year after that. I need to know how to make my natchez grow laterally. Its always too short. I see one blossom this year. Last year it was 4-5 blossoms. No clue what to do other than trying to grow more from seedlings which is very hard as a beginner. I want to grow herbal plants like mint, rosemary, and perhaps sage. I like my blackberries because it's a family treat I want to give and share. That's why Im looking forward to applying any new techniques I can from your channel. Even though my shrub is smaller an 12 inches all around above ground. Thanks for your education brother! God bless you

@texasprepper2 Funny thing..! I walked away from it and a landscaper didn't notice it and my blackberry plant got lopped in half! I was tempted to call it quits but I prayed about it and left an m&m's plastic jar over it with regular water and partial shade under the bush it was cut near. After a few weeks it was making leaves! I have a strong blooming white blossom! It may be just one but I hope to plant new ones from it's seeds asap in season. I don't know how to nurse blackberry seeds here is sunny southern California where summer now kick up to a regular 100 degrees. I'm excited to try out your methods and see what happens with my blackberry plant. I might use store bought blackberries for their seeds this year to implement all kinds of your methods so I have more experience this year. Thank you for replying. I quickly subscribed to your channel. Thanks for your videos!

I planted 3 plants 3 yrs. ago in a raised bed. I have been cutting them to the ground in the winter. When I discovered your method of pruning, I cut them to about 40 inches this season and tied the prima canes to my wire support. I have lots of laterals and berries ready to ripen. I live in the southwestern area of VA. My question is, should I limit the number of primacanes coming from the original plants next year? They are quite vigorous and taking over the entire raised bed. I will probably need more supports, but should i thin?

Hello I am wanting to clarify your recommendation of pruining not at 12-18inches. I just planted our first PAF plugs in February and they are doing great. I was told to "tip" them at 12-18 amd then 30-36 inches this first year. I just watched your video and you didn't recomend that on the primocanes. I just wanted to clarify that you don't recomend "tipping" a new plant primocanes or is that for just for an established plant? Thank you for your time!
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 4 ай бұрын
I have read the recommendations of pruning at 18 inches or so, but that’s not what I’ve do, or have ever done. I let them get three or 4 feet tall, (right above my trellis), and that’s where I prune them. It’s always worked for me. I prune the laterals when they get about 16 to 18 inches.

Hi there TP2 I love your Videos. I live near Baton Rouge, La. I have 3 PAF plants in container about the same size as yours they are not doing well the few ladreals that grow out then the leaves dry up and fall off. Is that a sign of not enough water? How often and what kind of plant food do you feed them?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
Actually, I water mine every day every day. Every day. In the summertime, if you don’t, they will start drooping. If they are actively growing, and making berries, they need a lot of water. I know that sounds like a lot of extra work, but that’s why I have a drip irrigation system. Other times of the year once or twice a week is probably all they need. Assuming you don’t get a lot of rain.

@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
The canes above the ground right now will produce berries next year and die. You’ll have to have NEW canes to replace them. That’s why the plant’s reproducing itself is so critical. So yes, leave them alone and let them grow. If they are not where you want them to be, you can move them… Dig them up and move them. But I would not do that in the summer. It’s just too hot and there would be too much of a shock. I have an extensive playlist on things like that if you will search it on this channel.

To my experience I tried during summer on cuttings like he showed don't work well some may survive. The best way 100 percent is tip rooting in summer, I have triple crown tip rooting in water bottles cut the tops off cut holes in bottom for water run off did this on mothers day now I can see full roots exposed may wait 2 weeks to cut from mother plant.

I don't think grow lights would help. They mainly need to grow roots, not leaves And yes, Hardstylzz is right... summer propagation has been tough for me (in hot TX) so tip rooting is the best way.

TC's would be the same... tip rooting would be best

@@BIGALTX I had zero success this Spring with propagation and I used the Dip and Grow and daily watered ? I saw another video where (he claims 100% success with this method) just stuck a primocane end into a 8" nursery pot with soil and covered it and then watered to keep moist , have you tried this method ?

I’m in north Texas and a new blackberry owner (I’m on year 2). I have failed to prune. My plants are so tall. Can I prune now? I’m kind of confused. 😮

Yes, you can prune now

If you have a trellis, I would prune 6 inches or so above the trellis. At this point, you will be just forcing new growth and it will help your plants for next year.

We have Arapaho-and I have tried to search-if they are primacane or flora cane. We think prima.

Arapaho are Floricane. They are an older variety. Most "primocanes" will say "Prime" in the name (Prime ark freedom, Prime ark traveler, Prime 45 etc) Arapaho are really good though. Used to have some.

I thought you were suppose to leave the terminals alone on the primocanes until they give you berries. Then after prune them for lateral growth. Did I get that wrong?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
I always prune the new canes at the wire. I leave the terminal ends alone on the LATERALS... just the laterals... for them to produce berries I think it means more summer berries. Then, after they fruit... I (might) prune them back if they are too long. I'll try to do a vid on that soon

I thought you're not supposed to prune during flowering?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s the case. You prune when they need pruning whether they are flowering or not. Now, don’t spray pesticides when they are flowering because it will hurt the bees.

So …when they sent my prime ark freedom blackberry plants .. they sent one with thorns on it…it has little berries on it and …I call it my male plant ..because it always grabs me..I don’t know what kind it is but I cut the Sh*t out of it ..almost all the way to the top of the tub….I thought you would probably get a kick out of that…I hate it
