Danny Gatton was 'better than they say'? The man has a signature model of Fender guitar with his name on it. People who knew about guitar playing sure knew about Danny Gatton. That said, I don't think I have enough of his material in my music library. This makes me want to do some research...
@D.L.Hunter.Palmer2 ай бұрын
@@Joe_J-MT_BoyI think that's the point. Widely regarded as the greatest guitarist to never enter popular consciousness outside of those of us guitar freaks. And he's even better than that. "If you think Danny was the greatest guitarist of all time... you're wrong! He was much better than that. Far too good to be constrained by something as pedestrian as the space time continuum."

It's impossible to formulate a list of the "best" or "greatest" guitarists in the world, past or present due to criteria used to judge and the many genres involved. It is a certainty that the knee-jerk reflexive bowing down to Jimi Hendrix is pure bullshit when one considers dudes like Danny Gatton, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, and many others. Personally, I've never seen anyone who could play about any song by ear, utilizing the entire fret board with effects generated from his fingers quite like Danny Gatton. The thing with Albert Lee which is really unique and what a lot of people don’t realize is that he’s not just got great technique and speed. The biggest thing that makes him stand apart from other players is his ability to improvise and play complex fast runs that join together seelessly and completely differently every time he plays a song. the endless ideas that he produces with speed fluency timing and swing is never the same on any song. I am not sure how he does this because lots of guitarists can learn a solo or a challenging piece of music note for note by copying it, but Albert will play it different every night and it will sound incredible.

Albert Lee is a legend and has been an A-list/first-call guitar guy for a half century or more. How in demand was he during his salad days in Nashville? He got double or even triple scale, something very few session guys get - and drove a Ferrari to work. Why? Because the man loves performing, never lets his ego get in the way, and strives to make the headliner sound good. And he's a Telecaster virtuoso... even if he does play a Music Man these days!

I'm sure I can't be the only one that watched this show (back in the day like I did, or hell not until today ) and wondered why Danny Gatton's guitar sounds strange. By "strange" I mean almost like we are hearing just the wet signal on a delay unit and none of the dry signal from his actual amp. The link below is Danny on Austin City Limits and is a great example of what his guitar tone really was like. The way it sounds on ACL is how it was supposed to sound on "American Music Shop". kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKO5eX6ie52sZqc I was talking to a guy here in Nashville who was a close friend of Danny and the subject of "gremlins" always showing up at the worst time possible if not in his own rig, then in the P.A., the recording studio, or TV studio to plague him and get him really depressed. I have had a lot of similar luck but apparently the worst I've seen was a cakewalk for Danny. I asked him to tell me specifically what kind of stuff are we talking about above and beyond Murphy's Law B.S. we all deal with. He responded by starting to talk about this episode of "American Music Shop". Amazingly I remembered what he was talking about VERY well. When this aired on TNN in 1993 I was finally starting to not sound like an amateur on the Telecaster...and I stress the word "starting". Both the lead guitar player in my band at the time (who was really the only chicken pickin' Tele player in that area of S.W. Virginia) and I watched this show loving every second of the playing but I will never forget thinking "Why does his guitar sound like that" and at the same time Tim asking me, "How did they manage to get his guitar to sound like that?" My buddy took a guess at what we were hearing and apparently he was pretty much spot on with what actually happened. We are apparently not hearing the signal from the mic that is in front of Danny's amp. When the engineer went to mix the multitrack recording of the show, the track where that mic corresponded could not be used. Apparently it sounded like a bad XLR cable. That would not be abnormal whatsoever as that happens all the time as anyone who plays music for a living knows, but what doesn't make sense is how the recording engineer that night never heard it. That tells me it likely wasn't the XLR from the mic itself because that is also how the audience was also hearing his guitar. So it must have been something in the chain after the mic signal but before it got to tape. The engineer in charge neglected to monitor what was going to tape and it was at LEAST days later when this was discovered. So what they did was use the signal from a mic that was hot to tape but was not in front of his amp. So it has all of that ambiance of the room. It was A solution and likely the only one aside from Danny coming back and replaying it which would have likely been interesting as hell to match back up because he totally played in the moment. From what I hear Vince was not pleased because he knew what Danny sounded like that night and we are not hearing it here.

This is the first time I've ever heard Albert sing. Sounds great. He's been playing that same guitar for at least the last 30 years. Still plays it. Never seen him with anything else.
@mattandrews85023 жыл бұрын
Yes, so great to hear him sing. That guitar doesn't get a fair shake or something with this lineup. His guitar tone is definitely the "Shemp" of this trio. Distant third. People make strange choices.

I saw Mark O when he toured w/The Dregs supporting the "Dregs of the Earth" LP. Been a die-hard fan ever since.
@goodun60815 жыл бұрын
@@jopestv1063 , yeah, me too, I saw the "original" (late period) Dregs with O'Connor, on the Dregs of the Earth and Industry Standard tours. They were awesome! I've seen Steve Morse solo, with the Steve Morse band, and on the Dregs reunions tours a number of times. I even saw him open up solo for McLaughlin, Dimeola and Paco de Lucia, and he jammed with them at the end of the show. Those were the days!

Gatton had a superhuman level of complex, lightning-agile chops, but for clean picking, beautiful tone, and impeccable taste I'll go with Albert - or Vince, for that matter -- every time.

Albert will play with such a great tone and pull out beautiful little riffs and unexpected licks he is amazing, I first saw when he was around 17 year old and he stood out even then, Albert played in one of his earliest bands but never owned a guitar and had to borrow a guitar when rehearsing, he learned piano before moving to guitar.

This is what makes America great :) Who ever named this sound, named it right, Country. You cannot be from a country area and not relate to this sound. Some music from other countrys around the world even reflects this american sound, or it might be a coincidence. I'm from Portugal and I like to drive around the country roads listening to Country music. ahaha
