text based rpg review - MUD, the only real & true roleplaying game? (1/3)

Part 1/3 - I have been searching a real roleplaying game for a long while and I was recently recommended MUDs, particulary one of them therefore I wanted to test this game and share my experience with you.
Based on my research and recommendations, I found out that the MUD that gives the best roleplaying experience is Armageddon mud.
I will be checking out the game and see whether this purely text-based game is really good and addictive as I have been told.

I'm glad to see MUDs are still around, I started with a MUD in 1997 called Greystone, it was the best I've ever played, purely original. The areas were magical. To this day I still have full scenes in my mind, much like playing D&D. Video games are becoming very generalized for the mass public. In the 80s and 90s games were more or less geared down to a certain public and should have remained this way like Warcraft II (great game). But like all things, money drives success, it's just not as fun i'm afraid.

Could not have said it any better! Great review. I played Gemstone 3 & 4 for years, along with many other MUD's. I would stick with Gemstone if not for the monthly fee. I just got into Aardwolf recently. Text Based games are insanely good, and I look forward to a long time with this one.

Most Muds are copies of each other with the same codebases and different surface aesthetics as the only real difference. That's why people often try a few and come to think that all Muds are about grinding up your level and typing 'kill mob'. Don't judge the genre until you've tried a game like Akanbar which was built from the ground up. It's a very different gaming experience.

If anyone likes Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers MUD is fantastic. Extremely noob friendly as well.

ive played aardwolf on and off for a few years now, i wish i could remember the first one that got me started on mudds, had to be around 1999 or 2000

You should try Oathlords. It's just like you describe. Complete sandbox. It has a lot of the good aspects of MUDs, but with a graphical interface.

I've been converting it to 3D, but I'm currently sidetracked implementing AI stuff. It will still retain a lot of its text features since they are highly compatible with current models that take text input, so the MUD legacy is proving to be a huge benefit.

Ahhh but there is one game which survived the test of time and did not succumb to the fate of all those which came before it. A game known as Gemstone IV. The current and longest lasting game of it's kind. Over 40 years in age...

yep, text base is the only real RPG's left. I use to play Dragons Gate way back in the early 90's. It was awesome and I spent may hourse purning up a phone line playing that game. A new game is comming called Shattered isles, that alot of us old G-gate players are heading too. A RPG is only as good as the players and it normaly has the RP rule, Roll Playing is a requirement not and option.

Bro, give God thanks that He allowed you to by His Grace come across "mud" games... It's such a rare piece of culture that exists on the internet that such few people have found, but the experience is so much better than that of World of Warcraft, or any other RPG online. Also, check out "The Eternal City" and "Accursed Lands" these are two muds equally good to Armageddon and equally fun, but different. Arm, AL, and TEC are the 3 muds I call my favorites, and I played a few.... These 3 all share in being RPGs where you can go around killing people, stealing their stuff, and getting stronger and stronger.. The reason I say, thank God is because... Obviously if He created this "Virtual reality" in which we live... and we see, and we exist.. and He gave us the brains to create this.... Just be thankful.... thank you this stuff exists! I Guess the atheist expression would be... "I'm amazed this exists," but anyways.... I give thanks to God if he is real, and if He is real I say, "God this is awesome... and if I can do this forever, and play more new and fun games like this... forever.... Then please help me to receive this!" Basically "help me get to heaven!"

Hey fellow mudders, there is a cool little underground text-based game floating around the web. It's the kind of game programmers play at work while on their coffee breaks. It's a little known secret only the hardcore strategists know about. To play, go Google "CodeElf Grid". It's a multi-player strategy game with elements of RPG in it.

im looking for a game like that too. deep economy system, hunger and thirst, ultimate open world freedom, cultivation, in depth social aspects, in depth skill system, pet systems, gambling, land owning etc would be the ultimate form of escapism compared to these shitty roller coaster mmos

doesn't matter the amount of mods, skyrim will never be a true rpg, the engine limits the game so much that makes it completely impossible. Example: you will never be able to become the personal king's bodyguard then slay him and somehow usurp the title, the "earls" in skyrim doesn't even have personality or complex artificial inteligence, they are just a bunch of empty and soulless scripted npc's.
