Nowadays 99% of games that aren't RPG, have RPG mechanics, like basically every modern Ubisoft game(AC/FC), plus the Ubisoft like games, where the RPG mechanics are there just to padd out the game and force the player to collect items around the open world, including modern God of War, Horizon, Ghosts of Tsushima, modern Spider-Man, that's weird i can only think of Sony games. This trend started in the late 00's with Assassins Creed and the Arkham games and grew to popularity with Far Cry 3.

Okay. First of all thank you for the explanation I'm not a big fan of RPGs because the gameplay is so slow and it needs quite long amount of time to finish it But on the other hand the action RPGs are much more preferred because there's much more interaction with the enemies than traditional RPGs where you basically just take your turn and decide whether you strike him or just revive your character.

Thank's a lot for this simple and nice explanation. I survived till today without knowing anything about all the genre/subgenre jungle in the gaming world. Just knowed the basic basic genres and pleeeenty of self developed words, trying my best to describe a game i enjoyed, to some friends. So it happend a lot of times, that some friends/ people just responden "aaaah you mean a xy game" that i finnaly decided: i have to learn at least the basic genres, in words, everybody is using cause nobody will ever use my words and i won't loose anymore time trying to explain "what kinda game" it is, since they always will break ut down to a "aaaaaaah it's a x- type, y-type game, why didn't you say it directly" 😂 So thanks and sorry for my english (probably many mistakes)

Which one is the original Zelda?
@sesa29844 ай бұрын
Follow up question, I'm sortof just getting back into video games...I grew up in the 80s so I loved Zelda, and that kind of thing. I'm wondering if you can recommend an RPG or two that I might like. I ldon't dislike the jrpg style for its storylines or non-'realistic' animation. But I like a little bit of character customization. I don't mind dark but honestly, something lighter and more whimsical would probably be more enjoyable. Turn based, or cards are a turn off. I kindof want something slightly more modern that has the open world zelda type feel. Feels like a journey, with engaging music. It can be from any era, At home though, I only currently have access to a gamecube, an NES, an evercade a gameboy advanced (with the gamecube adapter) and technically a Play Station 2 but thats in storage and not easy to get to. I realize that was alot to ask lol. Hopefully you find that kind of question fun.

Given the systems that you've listed, the closest that I can think of at the top of my head that fits those criteria is probably Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne.

To me a “level system” is not enough (or even required) to make a game an rpg. Leveling is just a type of progression, which exists in many games of all types, not just rpgs. What makes a game an rpg is character customization. This can be anything from branching skill trees or combat loadouts to full DnD style customization. But progression alone is not enough to be an rpg without some element of choice added on.

What would games like Project Zomboid or Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead be classified as?
@booze19964 ай бұрын
I'd say Project Zomboid is more of an immersive sim with light RPG mechanics but I'm a complete layman so who knows

The big issue I have is that I play these for the story. Games like TES or BG have great stories and I love them. Games like Diablo have story kind of tacked on to give a reason for the infinite dungeon crawling. It doesn't mean they are bad games, just not what I am looking for. I think of RPG and I think of story rather than RPG mechanic. I wish there was a term that would indicate how story driven a game is.
@mathewhosier9739Ай бұрын
Well a games genre is defined by its mechanics, so with RPGs we have RPG mechanics like leveling, equipment/gear/loot management, skill unlocks and attribute allocation, story isn't what defines a RPG, most games have some sort of story, what makes a game a RPG is it's mechanics and progression, the different RPG sub genres are just different gameplay styles but with most of the same RPG mechanics, a game doesnt need to be a RPG to have a deep story or choices, these are universal among most genres, while yes there are story focused RPGs but it's not the story that makes it a RPG, what I look for in RPGs is deep progression and build variety, to me there's nothing better than leveling up and getting stronger while crafting a unique build for my character or party
@mathewhosier9739Ай бұрын
When I think of RPGs I think of RPG mechanics like leveling, equipment and skill unlocks, ya know, RPG mechanics lol, again a games genre is defined by its mechanics, story is just a part of most game genres, its not unique to RPGs
@seanmahoney2671Ай бұрын
@@mathewhosier9739 That's just it, those aren't RPG mechanics. Things like choosing what dialogue options your character has and affecting a story are the mechanics that make an RPG. LOTS of types of games have levelling up or a skill tree and there is no real 'role' being played other than whatever build you choose. The thing is, while we disagree, neither is actually wrong. My point is that it is a confusing term to just say RPG because it is such a broad umbrella when it comes to video games. It makes it a less useful moniker when looking for types of games you wil like.

ERPG?
@hadeseye22979 ай бұрын
You CAN'T find an RPG on Steam, any console or PC. RPGs are played with people, with dice, pencils and paper. And CRPG stands for computer rpg. While old-school rpgs are OSR rpgs. Damn millenials.
