Excellent! I've probably changed 30,000 gallons of lube oil in everything from earth movers, generators, airplanes, volkswagens and marine engines. (no sail boats). This is the best oil change video I've seen and I recommend it to any apprentice or DIYer.

It's always a good idea to catch up on maitenance while waiting out the weather. I would be most interested in reading the tugboat maintenance manual authored by your chief, with handy tips on sharpening propeller blades, lubricating lock washers, and greasing the stove bolts in the galley to keep the cook happy.

One thing I'd like to recommend to the chief, next time you guys have canned corned beef on the tug, save the little key tabs that are used to open the cans. They make great spares for starting those mains! Every engine room should have a set.

Chief - that was great fun! Pray that no-one attempts to exactly duplicate your advanced techniques without a similar level of experience... This fall we were fitting some 'M33' bolts (or 1.3" by 7 1/4 TPI in proper measures). The torque wrench was actually 8ft long and needed up to 3 men hanging off the end to reach 1 foot ton of torque, when indeed it went 'click'. (Don't have the exact conversion to hand - I think 4 female engineers would work just as well) No ratchet on it, so fit to the nearest 60 degrees. Wishing all aboard fair winds and safe voyages in 2024. Happy New Year

In the early 70's i was on the USS Peoria LST 1183. We had 6 of the 2850 HP Alco Diesels. When underway i don't think we ever stopped the engines to change oil. They had two sets of oil filters and one would be bypassed. They had oil purifiers that ran so many hours each day. And i hope i am correct i think the engineman developed a way to change the oil while the engine was still running. They were all the time doing chemical test on the oil. If an unauthorized person came into engineering they got their butt greased.
