All they need to do the fix Autobalance is revert it to its previous design where you can choose to be autobalanced to the other team and if nobody chooses to switch to the other team, it will pick a player at random or a player with a high score but make it so autobalance is disabled when there’s only a few minutes left on the clock and when there’s only one point left to capture. Plus, make it so when you’re pairing up with a friend that you don’t get autobalanced. There’s actually an option to make sure you don’t get autobalanced to the other team in the lobby settings but Valve haven’t added it into the game yet for some unknown reason.

Hm, if they can do a re work comp ( the queue times is still shit ) why not re work autobalance and add some features that actually means and help autobalance itself

There was a time when I capped the intel twice and got the intel to enemy lobby on 2fort, then got auto balanced. Then I capped once on the enemy team and got the intel to my sewers before getting auto balanced again

Autobalance in my team is: - If im in top 3 players and im winning, i ll go into the losing one - If im in the losing team and my team has 5 less players than the other cause they quit, the one with less points from the other team come in mine - If im winning, at the end of the match, i ll be autobalanced and lose in 5 seconds

I feel like it should send a lower-scoring player to the opposing team, rather than a higher-scoring player. This would make it so that it doesnt make it one good player with a team of lower-scoring players. In some cases, they may be high-scoring, but they dont exactly have much team sense. But if your team has an unfair advantage just because you have a bad player, shouldn't ruin anybody's fun. This would also move friendlies over to other teams more often, making it so you have less people dragging you down if your team is doing good

good to see you again man! i haven't been playing tf2 long enough to see the previous forms of autobalance, since i only started playing in 2017, but something i always thought may have worked was team scrambling after a round was over. there are a few problems ive heard with this method, but i think theres ways to fix them. with the problem of people wanting to keep playing with the players they partied up with or the players they just met on their team, valve could introduce a system where people in a party will always be on the same team unless selected otherwise when they finally impliment that option. then after a round is over, the party will not be scrambled and will remain on the same team. this may not change the problem of a party of 6 joining and destroying a pub, but at least different people will benefit off of it. as for people youve just met in a match and want to keep playing with, i suggest valve also add the option to add someone to your party who isnt on your friends list but is instead on the server, similar to how that option exists for trading. then if youre added to that party, the next game you will be placed on the same team as that person. another problem ive heard of is people kicking those who were on the enemy team before just because they were getting destroyed by them. this is an obvious problem, but a possible solution is that for the first 3 minutes of a match it requires twice as many "Yes" votes to actually have someone kicked. this would make it so 2 or 3 salty people who were previously getting destroyed by you cant just end your time on the server, unless on the very rare occasion your entire team is filled with the assholes who do that, in which case they were likely gonna lose anyway since people who do that are often shit at the game, and it also means that if there is a hacker the server can still band together to attempt to kick them. granted, i know that people often vote No to kick hackers since they want them on their team to win, but a method that could be used to combat that could be that a hacker kick vote could be voted on by both teams, but only the team with the accused hacker can start the vote and maybe enemy votes only count for half as much as the team with the accussed, but now im getting sidetracked in the realm of my own lunacy. tl;dr i think valve should bring post-game scramble back. not vote scramble, though, that was annoying as hell from what ive heard.

Way back in maybe 2011 I used to play on community servers that had their own system. It was almost like the volunteer system Valve had added, except the player was also put in timeout until other members of their team died. Effectively, the game ensured even team numbers by preventing the most recent dead person from respawning. And if you don't want to wait longer than usual to respawn, you can just accept to be switched. Was the perfect system, I wish it had become official.

The volunteer system was perfect. Someone else could accept the offer even if you declined it and the offer also acted like a warning that you could be changed at any time. Many people say that it wasn't fast enough, but I think they forget that right before going to the instant-change system we have now, they reduced the time it takes to forcible change people by a lot, and for a few weeks it was actually pretty fast, while also feeling more humane.

iirc the volunteer system still exists. Whatever controls the auto balance first does the volunteer system with a select few players, if they all decline, then auto balance will kick in.

i think there needs to be more things that prevent autobalance from kicking someone. like for example if you are a medic with full ubercharge you don't get kicked to the other team and if you are on a 5+ killstreak you don't get forced over while you are still alive in the middle of the fight and of course the more obvious ones like if there is less than a minute on the clock you can't be auto balanced to the other team.

Another thing that makes autob unnecessary is the fact that teams usually become unbalanced right before the game ends, as the losing team quits en mass just as they realize they're definitely going to lose. This is why autob always kicks in late or just as a new round begins. The other team wasnt losing because they lacked players, they lack players because they were losing!

I like autobalance, it lets me know i’m not kicking the right ass. On a more serious note, most of the time people will say “no” to the other system that lets you decide, (when the system asks you twice to switch teams).

I personaly like this system, most of the round where i was being stomped by other team, after some autobalancing were going smooth and game lasted longer (and one team wasnt blocked at spawn.). System that asked you 'hey ya want to balance the game' wasnt good. Not so many people were hoping to another team, cause' why should you join a team thats already losing?

1: don't autobalance at the end of a match. if the final cap/payload is nearing complete and currently being contested ((nobody plays ctf and it stalemates too often anyway) then make sure it doesn't autobalance anyone 2: try not to separate those that are queued together. if they're in the same party, choose them last. 3: prompt, and if nobody does volunteer, THEN autobalance. autobalance is an awful mechanic to experience but is an absolute necessary evil. if we do these 3 things i can see it being less of a 500 pounds of force punch to the nads and more of a friendly boot to the stomach.

Yes, the auto-balance system is stupid and the volunteer system seemed better but it is not the reason is because the previous auto-balance where you volunteer was a waste of time and it did not balanced team 23%/100% players in tf2 did volunteer tp balance teams but the rest did not wanted to volunteer reasons: why should I volunteer to help the enemy team after either carrying my team or suffer with the enemy team, what do you get for volunteering xp if i wanted more xp i would farm in 2fort and last but not least I want to win. That is why valve decides to change it so the current system is that first it will ask you if you want to volunteer if declined it will force a person to join rather you like it or not. Conclusion: auto-balance is annoying but the reason it exist is to balanced the unbalanced now I do agree that it should not happen at the end of a round thou that should be fixed other than that the current system is better. Also give me a like if you think valve reward for volunteering should be alot better than xp.

All i just need that old volunteer autobalance system from "Meet your match", if your friend want to duel with you in 1v1 in casual match, let them go in other team and mess with us around and wasted our time. That one is great, i personally hate the old autobalance is just making people piss off about getting autobalance and deserve all that carry just get instantly autobalance at the final point, like player gonna leave the match super fast. But the old autobalance in other hand, keeping both team to fight fair not letting anyone to leave the server *But instantly rage quit cuz all the carry top score in one match* send one skillz man on other team to fight other skillz people, but they are in same party and they just all left... It's just very stressful one of your friend is OP skillz and afraid to fight you and hes just gonna queue another match and not refused to stay fight with us entrie match just 5 friend vs 1 friend. I go with the volunteer autobalance seem is more useful to keep your friend stay and fight other party or a lonely casual player. If other party leave, let them leave they know they can't win us. Few people on other team is brave enough to stay and fight and play the game like a true gamer warriors. They deserve.

Wasn't there an update that removed autobalance due to people complaining about it?...and another which promptly put it back because people were complaining about how bad the new system was? Idk, but it seems autobalance is the lesser of two potential evils, I'd rather keep it and have valve focus on other things

Auto balance is a necairary evil until game finding speed is faster. The pop up didn't work because no one would volunteer. Auto balance SHOULDN'T auto balance party members. Auto balance SHOULDN'T work if there's under 2 members, if one team only has to capture 1 flag/point or if theres 1 minute left of the team that currently controls the hill in koth. Auto balance SHOULD make it so when one round is over if one team has 5 players less then the other than the server auto scrambles. Auto balance SHOULDN'T activate during overtime. Auto balance SHOULD ask higher point players if they want to switch and if no one does after 10 seconds then one of the newer teammates gets auto balance this is because they arnt as attached to the team as others are.

There's not much to say about it, just... change it back, really. It's difficult to remedy this kind of situation.

Eh the problem with the asking was alot of games would just not have anyone switch, especially if it was to the losing team. Prob the best solution would be ask, then force if no one replys Or you know use estimated point values to autobalance rather than it being random, like a person with 30 points leaving switching someone with the closest value, OR adding other rules like disabling autobalance at 2min or if x distance from objective is achieved

Basing autobalance on how well the player seems to be doing could be very tricky. It'll require some proper optimisation to do that right. But at this point, I'd prefer that over what we have at the moment, yeah..

Autobalance in the nutshell: You start a round, doin decent stuff and in the middle of a match u get balanced, ok not a big deal, you doin your job and trying your best and at the very end you get autobalanced again and then you hear YOU FAILED! OOOOOH! - _- i know tf2 is free but i need a refund..

But bots fight much, much worse than humans. Standard bots can't even rocketjump or use non-stock arsenal, and if we take bots from mods, their limited script set can be easily abused.

i think what the auto balance gets wrong too is moving the wrong players. like i got auto balanced to the winning team and have the most points on both teams.

The reason why the volunteer system was removed was quite simple: in a pub of randoms no sane individual was going to willingly join the team that is obviously outmatched and in the process of getting rolled. In the hundreds of hours of pubs I've had while that system existed, I have only seen a player take that offer ONCE. And that was because he was a hacker that was about to get kicked, and did it just to spite us. That is the same reason why simply adding new players instead of autobalancing does not work either. A player that got autobalanced is much more likely to feel invested in the game and stay. If I'm just fresh out of the queue, and join a 12 v 8 where my team is obviously inferior, I'll just leave, because I have nothing invested in the game. Does that make me a bad person? Maybe, but ultimately I don't give enough of a shit to try to salvage what I see as a foregone conclusion, and I am neither forced nor incentivized to stay.

I know people say the volunteer system was slow, but I feel like it's still really slow even now though. when teams are unbalanced during setup time it usually doesn't swap someone until there's only 10 seconds or so left, which i've noticed if only because it always seems to happen to the unfortunate medic who had full uber and now doesn't have time to build it up again. if nobody has left or joined the match since the round started, why does it take so long for it to pick someone to switch and move them?? i haven't done a timed comparison or anything but it feels even slower than it was before :/ the current system is especially bad because there's no way to voluntarily swap teams, ever, even if the other team has fewer players than yours. so not only will you get autobalanced, you'll most likely never be able to swap back even if your new team ends up having a huge advantage (which seems to happen a lot, at least to me, because the matchmaker will add 2 or 3 people to the same team at once, rather than going back and forth adding 1 to each). overall i just wish valve would either speed up the reaction rate for autobalance (not ideal), speed up the rate at which new players are backfilled into matches (better), or just allow people to voluntarily switch teams in casual mode again (best option imo). they could also bring back the volunteer system and incentivize it indirectly by making the exp bonus it gives actually meaningful by adding some reason to level up (item drops for reaching a new level, or something along those lines). ANYTHING would be better than the garbage we have now

It's ridiculous that it breaks up parties. Sure people in parties have a big advantage if they're working together but that's something that should be celebrated and encouraged, not punished. It's TEAM Fortress 2 for gosh sake.

The autobalance we have now just doesn't work. You get balanced, then you leave, then someone else gets balanced. This happens in like every other game I get, a bunch of F2Ps leave because they are losing and it starts this cycle that ends up causing half the server to leave. They should have it be like it was back during the quickplay days, let us be able to switch teams and join spectate.

Unless they add some actual meaningful compensation for switching teams, the autobalance system is a necessary evil. I'd much prefer having a few players from the winning team get screwed to having an entire team fall into a perpetual ragequit cycle.

The problem is.... A casual scrub like me is too scared of competitive play. Like, I do shitty as Medic even in the normal game when I encounter a 5000+ hour Sniper. But imagine a whole team of players like that all against a 300 hour Medic.... I'd likely be thrown out of my team if that happened.

before autobalance did balanc 3 or 4 top score players and sfich places with top enemy team players now it teak 1 top player or clas that is missing in enemy team so stop waining and dont top score or you WILL be autobalanced also use usles clases like spy or sniper and you WILL never be autobalanced (i tested this out) (because in casual ther are 3 snipers or 3 spys in both team)

The reason why the volunteer Auto balance was removed because nobody would ever switch teams. So then why have Auto balance if it can't due it's job. ( When I mean job, it's to put one player from one team to another and not fixing the game as you stated before )

2 things they most player do during beeing autobalanced: 1. instandly disconnect. reque 2. exploiting balance issue with binding "retry" on a key and avoid that durring the 5 seconds gap. Its annoys the be forced beeing an party to avoid rolls as "experince player" all the time , but hey valve introduced the clusterf*** balance system that never works! Atleast not on me ... just bring the old valve servers back (pre meet your match update)

They removed the message asking you to switch because no one wanted to join the losing team. I like autobalence but to me it was just like valve servers, (it wasn't perfect but it did the job). Tweaks to the system would be nice, but I don't think it's the most important thing for tf2, at the moment. The old system asking you to join was less annoying, but I me or any my friends never actually joined the enemy team, as a balancing system it didn't work properly. As much as auto balance sucks, and switches you at the worst fucking times, it still is important to have and I rather be put onto the enemy team than play an unbalanced match.

Between playing in a team of 3 members against a team of 10-12 on Coldfront (as it was pre-Blue Moon), or the system that awards you for trying your best to win by throwing you in the team of losers you were steamrolling mercilessly just few seconds ago, I would rather go with the first option. The volunteering system didn't do its job simply because no sane person would want to experience the second listed option, but seriously, do you think it's *fair* when you have 100% Uber, or all your buldings are up and battle ready, or you're holding a major choke point, or you're in the actual middle of the Uber push/block and the system decides to kick you from the team you got attached to simply because the enemy team had a ragequitter? If you answered "yes" to this I have nothing to talk about with you.

Do you know the best solution to improve things that everyone hate (random crits, autobalance etc...)? Return game back to pubs. Why this will work? I can explain: You hate those things, because you take game seriously. Why you take game seriously? Because stupid Meet your Match update add competitive atmosphere to game, forcing us to play more seriously. (And by "us" i mean including myself, i don't like being infested by this system) You have to wait long time to get match, play just 2-3 rounds and wait long time to change map... That simply force us to take game even more seriously - you can not play again immediately after you lose. During pubs, all things (such as random crits) did not ruin game, because you could simply play next round on same map, and again... Well, you couldn't play with party back in old day. But if you look in video - not so much was improved. Correct me in comment if i am wrong. #keeprandomcrits

I don't think so. And again i can explain why: About autobalance: you could go to spectators and wait until your former team get slot for joining it, it was not that much pain in the ass. And picking player for autobalance had some algorythm for it (like one from few with less time played or something). About random crits: everyone get random crits (aka kill/death that he didn't deserve), someone right now, someone a litte bit later and someone got one mitute ago. That is making them fair and balanced in long time perspective. I agree, that they are unfair and unbalanced right here and right now. But here we are again: pubs had that "long time perspective" (you have more next rouns), casual - is "right here and right now" (map will change after round). And also, one KZbinr sugegesting to remove random crits mentioned that "they make casual less like competitive". No seriously, WTF? Casual NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE COMPETITIVE! The more similar two gamemodes - the less point of splitting them in two different. No competitive => no reason make pubs like it => one reason less to dislike them before Meet you Match.

Hey Exany, you're like the TF2 math man, right? Do you think you could find out if the Iron Bomber's projectiles really travel in a straighter path than that of the stock launcher? As a demo main, this is something that's been conflicting for me and there isn't any solid or visual evidence as far as I'm concerned, even though the wiki does state it.

They just think of team numbers not the skill, yes yo do have a 12v12 match Seems balanced. No every server has a team of new players and team of mixed experience players. Always have.

(which rewards changes with XP) -> nobody cares about XP -> nobody accepts the rebalance. -"It's bad, but it's what we got! -> nobody knows how autobalance works, so being-bad-but-being-what-we-got is the same as being not-what-we-need..... which is what it is: not-what-we-need. autobalance is there to balance the teams. right.... ok.... why are the teams unbalanced in the first place? because people leave the matches. why? because they're a bunch of tryhard whiners. solution? next time they queue for a match, don't match them anywhere. because, playing to not-finish the match is the same as not-playing.... so, don't play at all, and be done with it. autobalance just got worsened by the sprout of youtube and twitch channels of people doing let's plays: who would want to watch a loser? nobody! so, nobody stays in a match, in the losing side. plain and simple.

Why this version of autobalance made the final cut. Well, first, if you give players the choice to do i, most don´t do it. Second, its autobalancing first before useing new players because "no" not everybody playes the same map, i dislike batwater and like hydro, for example. Third, they don´t disable autobalance at the end of the round, cause they never know when the round is over. I had games where the lost was clear from the first point on. I also had games where the cart was pushed to 99% and the attacker still lost. The point is, you can never be sure enough when the end games and when not, to make a system that works save enough not to backfire by disabling autobalance to early or not enabling it back on to late. This comes from someone that got 3 times autobalanced in one match. Also this list, is a almost perfect list of what the worst part of the TF2 community bitches about. Because they have no clue about gamedesign and judge all those things based on that small surface, that the player can experience ingame. Also, do you where around as they disabled autobalance ? Gues not, cause you would know, it would be much worse. What counts for everything on the list. Only people who ain´t looking into the reason, why those things are in the game, complain about them. I would like to see the original TF2-Dev-Team explain it, then nobody would see a valid reason to rant about random bullet spread, random critz and autobalance ( if they bother to look it up). I really felt it, as they removed random damage spread. Now TF2 feels like Calculator Wars. Every directly hit demo pipe does excactly 100 Damage, i can´t imagen that anybody who loves the game as it original made as (a casual, "Fun first" Team-Shooter) would like that change. And don´t come me with comp, those competitive players are better suited for overwatch or something else that aims for a comp experience. Comp wasn´t even around for years after TF2´s release and was never a driving force of TF2. And will never be. The driving force of TF2 was always the Casual Just-for-Fun Playerbase, Community servers, Modders and even Traders. But Comp was and will be always nothing more then an half abandon and forgotten attachment. But no, thanks to the rise of E-Sport and the, seemingly, lack of experience by the current TF2-dev Team. All those comp players scream to Valve to radically change TF2 into a competitive shooter even so, most of its players based are more or less casual players, with no interrest in changeing that. What leads to updates like gun mettle, though break and meet your match. Updates that are mostly disliked and even hated, because the maturity of the TF2 community is casual and just in search for there own fun, in the game. Leading to updates that add gameplay advancing content, like new weapons, and content that adds to the silly and wacky nature of TF2, like group-taunts, to be liked and loved instat. Updates like Love & War. Seriously, if i look at pub server text/voice chats, the only things i read/hear talked about future update content, are things like: New weapons, new maps, gamemodes and halloween mode. I never here someone saying/writing anything about new Competitive Content (besides of fixing the excisting comp mode). Seriously, TF2´s Competitive scene is small and mostly not interresting by the maturity of the whole TF2 Community. The Competitive Community should never be deciding the direction of TF2´s futur or they will kill TF2 in the process. After "Meet your Match", that is pretty much garantied.

I mean sure you could bring back the volunteer system where it would ask people to get balanced, no one would say yes then it force someone after a lot of wasted time which just sounds like an even more useless system than the current one. Just make it not balance at the end of matches and if your in a party either switch the whole party if enough players are missing or no one in the party will be switched.

90% of the issue with autobalance would be solved if they just didn't switch people right at the end of a game. That's the only time when it's really annoying and serves no purpose.

tbh is really annoying auto balance happens mid game while you are in combat. 90% of the games I have been where the auto balance was placed it stayed the same way and it is honestly a waste of time. it ruins the game and it has not fixed casual nor it will any time soon. the older system at least let you choose and if no one wants to be auto balance then oh well. A game should never punish you for another's choice of leaving. how about fixing the matchmaking instead since that will give more results. at least maybe do it when teams are switching sides so it won't ruin the match as much. just not while the game is active.

DO NOT ADD MORE PLAYERS TO REPLACE THE ONES WHO LEFT A MATCH Seriously this just means you're much more likely to get thrown in an already lost match, where everyone from the losing team is ragequitting, thus giving you a guaranteed loss which you could do nothing about

Everyone in this comment section is like "they should..........". Just face it already, the tf team is only 2-4 people, they won't even do a quarter of this stuff because it's hard and taking so much time, tf2 is going to die sooner or later because valve doesn't even care about tf2 anymore.

Screw auto balance why did they bring it back the other system was 10x better I have 6 out of 10 matches and going to the losing team at the last second its not fun hopefully they Revere it to the other system or a new one :(
