i was not expecting to see a video this good today edit: fun fact about the quickscoping macro. Not only are those dependant on the servers tick rate, they're also dependant on the user's FPS. I learned this when I wanted to test out what it would be like for the quickscope timing to be nerfed, and it was inconsistent for my friend and I until we set our fps to a constant 60

Did you use an in game script with wait commands? I definitely ran into issues with client FPS trying to work with them (I wanted to make a quickscope practice script for this video but it didn't work cause of FPS variation, that double click website saved me lol). I’ve been around :) I only work on videos when I’m actually driven to do so, which keeps me from getting burnt out, but also solidifies my annual KZbinr status. Maybe I’ll do slightly less involved content in the future or just buckle down on more longform stuff since the editing process is not as much of an uphill battle as I sometimes feel like it is. Very nicely edited and paced! I didn't know about the rescope exploit, even after 2000+ hours in game and watching content about tf2. Good on you for staying out of drama, it's almost never a benefit to anyone.

Glad you enjoyed :) And yeah I considered putting in my two cents about sniper balance but at the end of the day, drama sucks and I can’t stand it haha. Ignoring that anything I said would immediately be thrown away because I main the class and am biased, I also don’t have any concrete balance ideas for the issues he has and don’t want to present as an authority on the matter. Hardscoping is ridiculously strong, and reducing his ability to shut down areas by making the rifle discharge or aim shake over time is the best solution IMO. Laser would help but can be hidden like the dot, ammo nerf or reload would only create small windows of opportunity that goes out the window if there’s more than one sniper, and quickscoping/dying up close will make people upset whether the delay is 0.2 seconds or 1.2 seconds. I’m not a game designer so it’s up to valve to figure out if they feel it’s worth it I suppose. But yeah, not putting out a video about it and stirring the comment section debates didn’t hurt me any lol

Thanks a lot, I’m glad you enjoyed :) I’m aware of the dot trick for finding spies but I don’t think I’ve ever got anything with it unfortunately. Since I run smg most of the time it’s a bit easier to check with that if I think a spy is going to be approaching soon, especially somewhere predictable like Hightower lower spawn. But it’s still can be a powerful piece of game knowledge if you can react fast enough for a shot.

I do plan, and have work done on, more videos about sniper’s other items. I probably won’t be able to get as in-depth with items like the SMG, but I’ll focus more on the strategy of why and when you’d want to use a specific item. Might branch into other class items in the future as well. Time will tell :)

On paper it’s better to have auto rezoom on to get the benefit of being able to enter scope early. However, it doesn’t always feel great to play on, especially if you’re switching over to it. I don’t keep it on personally and would probably sooner use a key to toggle it on when it would be useful. If you’re willing to buckle down and learn how to play with it on, it doesn’t cause any notable downsides and gives you the upsides I went through in the video, at the cost of the time investment of relearning your fundamentals.

Great video! What config do you use?

I use a very, very modified comfig medium-low. General idea was to keep models and textures high but lower everything else, so things like lighting, shadows, character quality, and ragdolls/gibs are all reduced/disabled. I have a 2080 super so I can get away with antialiasing and other gpu-specific enhancements, but I'm CPU bottlenecked so it has been a struggle to keep frames high haha. Glad you enjoyed :)

i had no idea there is a 0.2s headshot delay when you scope in. i thought you just couldn't fire for 0.2 seconds after scoping?

Just locks you out of dealing critical damage yeah. It does cause a weird interaction with items that have bodyshot damage penalties (heatmaker and classic); if you shoot the head before you can deal a critical headshot (0.2 seconds on heatmaker, full charge on classic), you deal a non-critical headshot that does more damage than if you bodyshot them. You can use this on the classic to deal more damage than a fully charged bodyshot, 135 on body vs 149 on a last second, non-critical headshot. Not practical knowledge by any means, but interesting if not a bit funny nonetheless.

The worst of the sniper rifles, but when you consider how strong the rifles can be, I hesitate to say it's a "bad item" when compared to items on other classes. It'll get its own video at some point since its script is the furthest along, and I want to cover *all* of sniper's items over time.

Sniper really can't headshot for the first fifth of a second after scoping? Isn't that exactly the kind of delay that people have been crying for valve to add for years?

The sniper hate wave really started after a video came out claiming 0.2s was too fast and that sniper was too powerful up close, when in reality people would be upset regardless if the time delay was 1s or .01s. People don’t like dying to sniper up close, even though it’s a way worse situation for the sniper to take than for the aggressor. The real issue sniper has is his area control, which has way more to do with hardscopes than a headshot delay. While I don’t think we’ll see a significant balance change to sniper (or any weapons for that matter, tf2 income doesn’t justify the dev time), the way you’d tackle it would be to reduce his influence on holding chokes and other areas. The only ideas I’ve personally had were gradual charge decrementing or aim shake as they’d limit this without making the class feel sluggish like a reload time change would.
