Just to clarify, Jerma got his start on KZbin posting Tf2 content, and got really big, so much so that Nathan Vetterlein, the voice actor for scout came onto his stream multiple times and they had really hit it off, and years later, The Naked and The Dead, which is an official Tf2 Comic, was going to include a scene which revealed the real name of Scout (and Medic), and during the making they allowed Nathan himself to name the character, and he named him "Jeremy" After Jeremy Albertson, aka Jerma

Some backstory about Sniper: The comics reveal that he's not originally from Australia, but rather from the sunken land of New Zealand. Australians in the TF2 universe are characterized as big, dumb brutes with mustaches and Australia-shaped chesthair, and their advanced technology is just the result of them mashing things together and it just works(like the orks in the 40k universe). Sniper's parents launched him to the coast of Australia in an escape pod as NZ was sinking, Superman style. As for Heavy: he may look like a giant brute, but he's actually one of the smartest members of the team, holding multiple degrees.

Some trivia: -Engie: his family has been building machines since the 1800s and are responsible for building immortality machines for the mann family (2 brothers fighting each other with mercs from red and blue) and the administrator (woman who is talking to both teams during matches and updating you on the current state of the match) that are powered by australium (rare and powerful metal from australia that gave all australians mustaches. Yes even women, babies and animals). Pretty much has all phds you can think of. -Heavy: He has multiple miniguns, all with female russian names. His default one is called sasha and heavy puts it in a baby crib at night. He has a phd in russian literature. He has 3 sisters (one gets engaged to soldier). They live in siberia after escaping a russian labor camp. Heavy gives most of his salary to his sisters and mom. -Scout: His name is Jeremy. He has approx 5-8 brothers and was beaten by all of them. He wasnt strong but he was fast. He is from Brooklyn. He regularly consumes Bonk! Atomic Punch, an energy drink that contains sugar and radiation a couple hundred times of the lethal amount. He is capable of double jumping. His crush is Miss Pauling, the administrators assistant and assassin/cleaner (the after murder kind). (Pauling makes an appearence in other tf2 content if youd like to watch it ;)) Scout is implied to be a virgin. Every time he gets killed ingame, theres a 1/100 chance archimedes flies out of his blown up corpse, referencing meet the medic. He is cannonically a gift from god. -Sniper: He is originally from new zealand but was adopted in australia after his parents had a fight after his father sunk the entirety of new zealand atlantis style and he was launched away accidentaly and landing in his adoptive parents yard superman style. He used a drug from mannco (suppliers of both red and blu with guns, hats and buy in cagefights), which increased his bladder massively and has to piss every 3-5 mins in a jar. He uses his piss jars as a fighting form named jarate. Lives in an RV. -Demo: He is highly intelligent and sophisticated when sober but only able to fight when properly drunk. He has 5 active full time jobs, merc included. Both his parents were blind with an eye patch on both eyes. He made friends with the soldier from the enemy team. His alt melee is a haunted sword and he gets stronger with every head he decapitates with it. He lost his eye after peeking into the wizard Merasmuses (more on him on soldier) book, the bombinomicon. Medic restores Demos eye every halloween (Demo forgets this every time) which becomes possesed and actively tries to kill the mercs, making every halloween event cannon. After he goes sober for too long his liver started making alcohol out of his blood. Due to this robots meant to kill him from sucking all his blood out get destroyed as those cant stand Demos high level of alcohol. -Soldier: Highly aggresive and a neck snapping enthusiast. He was denied enrollment during ww2 so he collected enough cash for a ticket to storm the beaches of normandy, in the 1950s. Has severe lead poisoning after consuming tainted water for years, unaware that all mercs have been supplied with clean bottled water, hence his insanity. He was Merasmuses roommate (hateful and powerful wizard with nonstop money and mob issues). Soldier ate all of Merasmuses "get killed, come back stronger" pills, thinking it was Merasmuses heart medication, making Soldier connonically immortal. Due to this Merasmus tries to kill Soldier and all mercs every halloween cannonically. His VA Rick May unfortunately passed away in 2020 due to covid complications, still being remembered to this day with soldier statues over multiple maps. -Spy: He is scouts biological father, had scouts mom hide this fact from scout, making him think his father is Tom Jones the musician. Still cares and actively helps scout. Has very expensive tastes. His VA is both Spy and Pyro. Probably the smartest person when it comes to strategy. Has a cyanide capsule implanted in his teeth. -Pyro: Singlehandedly the most screwed up individual on the team. Its gender is non confirmed. Loves fire and rubber duckies. After the teams were disbanded, it became a very successful businessman/woman/thing. Its vision is normal as all others ingame but certain items/cosmetics/weapons changes this to Pyrovision™, making the game look similar to meet the Pyro. Pyro was the last merc to receive its "meet the" trailer, several years after all others. Arch nemesis of Spy. Shares VA with Spy. -Medic: Best friends with Heavy. Actively experimenting on all his teammates ranging from small changes to implanting orangutan prostates. Able to bring back the literal dead. Made a deal with the devil, selling every single one of his teammates souls to the devil for more lives. Possible ties to ww2 germany. The Spy head in his fridge is a reference to his prototype meet the medic trailer (available to watch on youtube). Medic has a Surgeon Simulator VR collab where you have to replace heavys heart. Will change/add stuff as more comes to mind or is suggested. Sry for the long post, heres a 🥔

Fun fact. In TF2 universe, in Australia they found a new mineral that makes people buff, called australium. Out of the 9 classes, sniper is supposedly Australian, but he's a bit scrawny. Well, sniper is actually from New Zealand, which his parents sunk underwater and his mom accidentally sent him to Australia during a wine binge. Edit: 14:12 the bleep originally didn't actually have a quote under it, but after a fan contest, it was settled that it's "they got more monsters in the great loch ness than they got the likes me". Which, considering that demoman's entire family tree is filled with vision impaired black scots, means that there's quite a bit of Loch Ness monsters. edit 2: 20:59 that interaction is a reference to the original concept for meet the medic. In it, medic accidentally makes a spy head live and makes it invernuble to damage, but the pals at Valve realized that, this version would explore the medigun more than medic himself.

Yes, these were created as official promos when The Orange Box was released by Valve. There was even talk of getting a TF2 animated series on Adult Swim, with a pilot and everything called "Expiration Date." Still up on their YT channel. Too bad we lost Soldier's VA to COVID a while back. God rest your soul, Rick May. *quick googling* Ok, so they DID name Scout after Jerma, naming him "Jeremy," when they were fleshing out the characters for the Miniseries. They at least got a comics run. And to be fair... Scout's from Boston, lived on the streets during WW2 as a kid, I can see him being named Jeremy.

My only gripe is these are not in order of release. Also, fun fact, the decapped heads in meet the soldier are usually enough of a shock to make people not process that Soldier’s story was leading up to a homonym pun. Tzu = Zoo Spy actually called scout’s mother his little cauliflower. He’s been in a relationship with her since about…at least nine months before scout was born. I like that the voice actor for scout did a "Who's On First" bit and then someone did a SFM on it and it's honestly the best thing ever. And no Scout didn't say "She" when talking about Pyro, that's just YT captions not being able to process accents and Valve not fixing them.

Fun fact: out of all the Team Fortress games (TF: Classic, TF: Reloaded, TF2) TF2 is the only one that is its own game. The others are mods for Quake 2 and Quake 3, respectively. Now you need to watch "Expiration Date," the pilot to the canceled TF2 AdultSwim show. After "Meet the Pyro" was released, Valve also released Source Filmmaker, which allowed anyone to make TF2 (and other media) shorts in the Source Engine. Valve even created an awards show, the "Saxxys," for the best SFM TF2 shorts from 2013-2019. Some of the winners had assets from their shorts added to the game! If you're familiar with the old Treyarch CoD Zombies games, you'll recognize the Medic's voice actor as Robin Atkin Downes, who voiced Primis Richtofen in those games.

That fun fact is technically untrue. Team Fortress 2 is actually an extremely modified version of of Half Life 2, even though it's now distributed independently. Remember that TF2 was originally bundled with HL2, as part of the Orange Box. Most of the unneeded assets from the original game are removed, but several of them (e.g. various UI elements, and subtitles for HL2's cutscenes in different languages) are still present in TF2's file folders, even though they're not used in TF2. In some situations Team Fortress 2's process in windows is displayed as hl2.exe, and this is why.

I personally know Gary Schwartz (the voice of Heavy Weapons Guy and Demo Man). I'm part of his theatre group he founded in North Bend, WA called Valley Center Stage. He teaches improv, and wrote a kid's book called "The King of Average" (which I highly recommend if you like the works of Roald Dahl and Lewis Carroll).

There had been a handful of the characters’ names that had been revealed, mostly in the comics which are canon. Engineer: Dell Connager Soldier: Jane Barrister Doe (might be a fake name) Demo-man: Tavish De’groot Sniper: Mr. Mundy Scout: Jeremy Medic: Ludwig Humboldt Heavy: Mikhail/Misha To answer your question on why Demo-man can’t have his eye replaced. That is funny enough is also revealed in the comics. As a child, Demo took up a job working for an actual honest to god wizard named Merasmus. He read a cursed book and the book stole it and placed a curse on his socket. The medic reveals that he has replaced the eye on numerous occasions and that every Halloween, the eye would transform into a monster and try to kill the team. The medic just gave up trying at some point.

These started with "Meet the Heavy" and "Meet the Scout" as sample segments for choosing voice actors. After Valve published them and received immensely positive feedback, they decided to make one for each class, and accompany them with major updates. If you watch them in release order, you can see each one becoming more polished over time, as a dedicated video meant to be released.
