It’s kind of tragic how the only “vanilla” version of TF2 remaining is locked behind the Xbox 360 and PS3 copies of The Orange Box. It’s this relic frozen in stasis and untouched by time. No matter how much TF2 has changed and evolved, I’ll always remember the TF2 of ‘07 that I fell in love with.

Now this takes me back. My first big experience with modded TF2 on the xbox was with a guy named Meet the Crit. Meet the Crit, being a savvy chap, used his powers to turn 2Fort into a new map basically, cutting off a few routes but adding a few new ones, making ramps that used the Gordan Freeman glass pane material so you were walking on these weirdly ornate ramps. Just really cool stuff for the time. I got so nostalgic for the game that I went to try and stream it a little while ago, and there were absolutely no servers at all it was dead at that moment in time. It really is one of those things that you had to be there for.

I still have all of my old configs for my stuff I did. Pass the Bomb, Falling Tiles, Fatman Flag Football, Musical Tiles, Remote Controlled Props would be the major hitters. I did a lot of mazes and jungle gym platformers, they were more creative than a static remaking of the same game again and again. There were a lot of malicious people too in the mix, with people unbinding controls and saving the results on unsuspecting players. Spawncamping with godmode/infinite sentries. @@somebonehead that's unfortunately how it seems for Half-life, a lot of people don't know what it is. I don't know when your story happened. I think you’re the only person to really sum up the nostalgia of hacked TF2 Lobbies on the Orange Box back in the Xbox 360 days. Reminds me of multiplayer servers on Call of Duty World At War where hackers could do some crazy shit like text bombs and wall hacks. Being fairly young at the time and witnessing these things that were seemingly unexplainable other than just “mystery hackers” really left an impression on me as a kid. I think it’s funny where you said hackers were treated as celebrities warping the game to into some chaotic parody of itself. There’s a certain disconnect between vintage console hacking where nobody knew what they were doing and modern hacking which tends to be malicious and purposefully meant to make the game unplayable and worse for everyone with none of the fun or charm.

I remember this very vividly. I invited my friend Nicholas over so he could try out TF2 on my Xbox 360. While he was playing, a jet black Heavy wearing a chef’s hat noclipped into the spawn room, wielding Sasha as his melee weapon. It only happened once and I’ve never quite been able to track down anyone who experienced the same thing.

Wow never realized how far the modding scene got. The most I remember back in the day was loading into a custom rocket jump map made up of fences. I remember seeing some promising work of custom modding Payload on Dustbowl using a minecart set on tracks. The most modding I could ever do without an actual modded Xbox 360 was entering Source console commands via editing Xbox profiles on a PC and loading them through a USB drive. Wasn't much but rebinding Medic to say Spy was, to me, like hackerman status lol.

I was one of those weird guys who's start was on 360. I put many many *many* hours into TF2 on Xbox Live. I did not get a viable computer until 2011, at which point I finally got it on Steam. TF2 on 360 was a very good time. Many fond memories on there.

The amount of hours I have put in TF2 on the Xbox 360 is insane! So many good memories of playing this late into the night with my buddies was some of my favourite memories. Thank you so much for making this video!

As a kid I remember playing the crap out of TF2 360, I still remember the time I joined a random game and it was the crane map from the highway level of HL2. Was super cool to play and see what was possible (the modder also gave all the orange box achievements out to everyone)

That photo of the PC you used was **literally** the first model of PC I had as a child. Compaq Presario [Model Number] Not the one I used to play TF2 tho, that would be a few OS's away yet. It even has the speakers and the monitor too. That photo makes me so nostalgic.

The 360 version was my first TF2 experience as well, all the way back in 2009! I mostly did vanilla stuff, i wasnt lucky enough to run into these modded lobbies, but I also remember wandering around empty servers in the dead of night looking at the details of the maps. It was one of the things that springboarded my interest in game development. I remember looking at all the machines and lights and background rooms of the 2fort intel room while listening to mechanical clicking and beeping ambience. Good times dude

First experience with TF2 was wandering around an empty tc_hydro and listening to the developer commentary when I was like 12 because I didn’t have Xbox Live.
@paldinox1 Жыл бұрын
SAME, I bought the Orange Box for HL2 and Portal but I had no idea what TF2 even was. I wandered around Hydro as Heavy for like half an hour listening to commentary nodes and repeatedly taunting before becoming bored and never touching the game again until I got my first PC in 2016.

I remember sometimes hackers on console would just change your fov to about 120. It was the nicest thing ever. Like "WOW I can see the scouts arms now!" It felt like I was a pc player and it happened quite a few times I recall.

PS3 TF2 was my first taste of the game back in late 2011. I have a few fond memories of even the vanilla game, as vanilla TF2 is quite charming for how simple it is, but I remember a few modded servers like this one zombie survival gamemode on dustbowl that was pretty sweet. But a lot of my interactions with modders ended up being griefers with aimbots and speed hacks sadly

I downloaded a custom keybind mod that would spawn enemy AI and all weapons and godmode n shit for the 360's Orange Box, using Modio, an old defunct cloud based modding software where people could upload their modded gamesaves to the database, and you could download them and it would rehash and resign the save to your account automatically. It also had save editors built in, and a save viewer n shit. It was awesome. Modded so many xbox 360 games with that shit, especially Borderlands. I miss the days of USB modding.

Killer video. I was just talking to someone a day prior to watching this about how cool TF2 was on the Orange Box. This was one of those games where I would tell my friends about it and nobody knew what I was talking about. It's funny to think that now I can talk to TF2 players and even they don't remember or know about TF2 on the Orange Box. I had no idea about the mods though, I never managed to run into any of those lobbies I guess.

Used to mod Mw2, Gta lV, World at War, and Cod4 during the 360 days. My friends list was constantly full, and I couldn't even play a match without receiving messages from half the lobby. I always tried to make the lobbies as fun as possible, however, and I thankfully never got banned. Definitely good times, even if the constant messaging got annoying sometimes. Awesome video man!

Great video! Man, Me and my friends used to play this version of the game for so long. We put so many hours into this version. We used to play in private servers together and just hang out. Sometimes we'd hop into a bunch of random online matches, hoping to find a modded lobby to let us use character voice commands, fly around, turn team killing on, etc. I miss this version. I would never play it ever since I got my own PC and started playing that version instead, but man. It's so crazy to think about how creative me and my friends were, I believe my interest in story telling came from the shit we'd make up in our private servers. I miss those days, simpler times.

Hey man, huge respect for you bringing attention towards console modding. I still remember the good ol' days of Halo 2 modding and watching all my friends lose their shit watching a Warthog do a backflip and fly away into the sunset. Back in the day guides were much harder to come by and you had to do a lot of research to get things setup.
