I think the main problem with effects such as Bubbling, Overclocked/Memory Leak, Eerie OF etc. is that they don't glow. If Bubbles were silvery glowing, OC and ML glowy in their respective colours and Eerie OF had some purple undertone, they would be much higher, especially Eerie OF, I think it would be even above the regular OF.

I really dislike that bigger traders almost always dismiss the cheaper effects and say that they're bad, usually JUST because they're cheap. I for example really don't like the Burning Flames or Sunbeams, not because I can't afford these, but for how plain and boring they are. Seriously, just take a flame particle, smack it on a hat and it's worth 5000$ more. The look of the effect is also affected strongly by the hats and/or other effect combinations, or themes. For example, my friend wants to make a stinky, fat scientist papa engi and his unusual hat of choice is a Massed Flies Brainiac's Hairpiece, which matches great with the theme. The Nuts&Bolts is also literally always themed when put up on engineer or a robo hat. The first time I saw it on an MvM server I was amazed how great it looked on our engi and when I told him, he looked pretty happy. Subatomic or Atomic look awesome on space theme hats like The Head Full of Hot Air or Bubble Pipe and Aces High should be considered god tier on the Hat of Cards. And you know why I like them? Because they have personality. Just tell me, what do effects of Purple or Green Energy say about a person wearing it, except for being either good at trading, lucky unboxer or the reason his mom's credit card is suddenly empty. Yeah sure, they look flashy as heck, so what? Your head is visible to enemy snipers 10x as much and you can forget about ever playing sneaky. I have to say though, not all of the high tier effects look like garbage to me though (obviously). Circling Hearts is always adorable on pyros or hoovies, I love it with the Tough Guy's Toque. Nebula is just amazing, nothing more to say about it. Morning Glory and Death at Dusk are well made, well thought out and at the same time you don't look like a flexing butthole when you combo them, unlike Scortching and all these others. TL;Dr : Expensive effects =/= good. Good expensive effects = good Cheap effects =/= bad. Bad cheap effects = bad. Why do I have to say this.

personally, my mentality on unusuals is A. is it easily noticeable, that way other players see it B. does the effect look good if the effect lands in both those categories, it's a top tier unusual effect, for example circling peace sign isn't a very expensive effect to get, but it looks nice, and is flashy enough for other people to notice, i have a circling peace sign human cannonball, and it is my most used cosmetic, because it fits flashy and looks good

I used mass flies in a trash themed soldier load out with the beggars and the banner with the beat up trumpet and the frying pan, it was on the pot cosmetic he has and I thought it was a good idea

(NOT A RANT) The #1 position is on my dream unusual which is a Massed Flies Swagman's Swatter, because the corks on the real life hat the Swagman's Swatter is based off of are actually designed to keep away flies, so it's rather realistic and cool to me.
