When I was in the Army we had 2 physical training uniform changes, 5 uniform changes and 3 dress uniform changes. It's good to know that in the future they still have this issue.

I found it funny that in the U.S. Navy, they went to a blue and black camo while one served on a solid gray ship. The only time the camo could work is if you ffell over the side. The one time you want to stand out, you are just fading in to the visual off the open ocean. Not to long ago the Navy went to a green camo, a lot of shrubbery has been fished out of the ocean.

In a way, it kind of follows on from the Wrath of Khan uniforms. This is all the more clear when you look at it's later development, the version used in DS9's 'You Are Cordially Invited', with it's belt and other features, is very clear.

Very cool rundown on the uniforms! I can just imagine some Ensigns complaining about finally having enough uniforms to call it a wardrobe only to have to decide what to throw out in favor of the new designs. That always seems to drive people to distraction!

I don’t think the Trek creators have ever been satisfied with the uniforms of Trek. They changed them so often. With the exception of the monster maroons.

TriAngulum Audio Studios that might explain why from TOS to TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and DSC. but with TMP, 2-6, and all the changes in TNG, plus the DS9/FC within a series. I know for a fact the WOK uniforms were done, both because the actors hated TMP uniforms, and because the director thought the TOS uniforms weren’t very good. TNG already had a new look, but as you so concisely showed, there were like 13 variants in TNG alone. That’s gotta be the result of not being satisfied with what they had.

In all of Star Trek history (thus far) I very much prefer the TNG officers uniforms introduced in season 3, with the "reversed" early DS9/Voyager variant coming a close second.

I loved how the second TNG uniforms weren't a retcon. I forget which episode it was, but there was a photo or hologram of someone from the first series era, and he was wearing the tight catsuit with the shoulder piping - also when they found Thomas Riker, he had shoulder piping, although the costume appeared to be constructed out of the contemporary fabrics and to the looser fit. It's like sure, the costume design was changed for practical, real-world reasons, but the uniform design changed in-world and no-one tried to claim that the older style had never happened. I also have to wonder about the medical scrubs - my initial thought is that it's stupid for surgeons to wear red, because you don't want blood to camouflage on what you're wearing. But then I realised that not every species has red blood, and indeed, don't the sciences tend to be where Vulcans gravitate? So maybe it was a green-blooded species who established surgical scrubs that THEIR blood shows up in contrast against. Also it's interesting to note that in 2398, Starfleet seem to have gone back to the 2365 cadet uniform. Only without the cargo pants pockets. Which is a shame, you can always use more pockets.

Regarding the uniforms from the 1 & 2nd seasons of TNG that you still see after the change from S3. I always assumed that it became the uniform for enlisted members of Starfleet hopefully with some changes to material and the like

Was there actually an Ensign junior grade? The hollow pip was usually used for an NCO position like chief or chief petty officer (O’Brien wore one towards the end of TNG and early seasons of DS9) with crewman ranks having no pips at all. Kosinski also wore a unique tank insignia never seen anywhere else.

I never understood why Gene Roddenberry went away from the 1960s uniforms for those mono colored ones in the motion picture. I did like Admiral Kirk's uniform but he should have just upgraded the material. I think the fans would have loved seeing the gold, red and blue during the movie or maybe a hybrid like Admiral Kirk except instead of his white use the gold, blue and red. A bit off topic from the video just popped in my head 😁

@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Talking of Admirals the uniform worn by Admiral Janeway, the representation of Capt. Janeway's father, in 'Coda' is slightly out of place. Voyager's chronology is up the wall and Janeway's age is open for debate but he died when she was 15 which going by either age frame for Janeway is before 2353 (memory alpha has him die in 2353 solely based on his uniform, perhaps he got his new uniform and tripped over the new boots into the iceflow? Janeway's age is up in the air as early on she was older due to Bijold being originally cast)

I always thought the reason there were many admiral uniforms was less they had a standardized uniform and more because admirals had more leeway on what constitutes a uniform.

That's not really how a uniformed in the first place organization works though!

True but, they all have some base standard they have to follow outside that they seem to have free reign. I mean it would explain why in 11 years they seem to go through so many that they have less of a uniform and more of a standard. My question is all the admirals we see wear red ie command division why did we never see an admiral from another division we know they exist McCoy was one in episode 1 but he wasn't in uniform, I hope...

Or an even more logical explanation, based on canon, is Starfleet simply felt it never go the design right for these types of uniforms! Thus they continually changed the whole lot! LOL and as for McCoy, yeah, I think he was a retired admiral like Satie from Drumhead, who just wore what they wanted! And Admirals wear red because Technically they over see (or are in command) of their respective divisions! :)

Love the captain's jacket. Just looks so comfortable and quite frankly it would be more functional. Yet my favorite uniform is still the last uniform worn by the DS9 crew. It is comfortable and the functionality is superior. I hope that in the future the uniforms will become not only more functional but appealing to all Starfleet personnel. And of course my personal second favorite would have to be the militaristic monster maroon. But that is a very hot uniform, however, the look is just magnificent. Live long and prosper 🖖

I really wished in the stng they retained the gold/ yellow of command with gold or silver trimmings depending on rank and data should have been in science blue even as a lt commander the contrast with his skin would have been wonderful onscreen imo😊

that's a good idea fer someone to draw the belt in a Starfleet uniform guide. much like in my trek continuity, Starfleet marine corps uniforms were the ones shown n yesterdays enterprise, and high ranking marine officers wear black breeches with knee high boots. :)

Another hybrid you didn't touch on was that the TNG combadge debuted with the previous uniform, as in "Family" we see Jack Crusher in his holographic message to Wesley, wearing the "Yesterday's Enterprise" variant of the Kirk-era movie uniform but with the TNG combadge.

I always found it strange that in most Trek that they'd always beam down no matter the environment and never wear any other kind of away jacket (as in Ent & Disc. I know that they were supposed to be made from a wonder material that maintained ideal body temp etc. It still seemed odd. Unlike the uniforms your videos are uniformly excellent :)

My head canon for the color switch is that some intern messed up and nobody noticed until it was too late. It doesn't really make sense to me for them to use the same colors from the beginning (Enterprise) almost all the way up to the "monster maroons" and then suddenly switch once a full replacement for the maroons were needed.

I’d have liked to have seen the Voyager switch to the DS9 greys after they made contact with Starfleet again (probably would have had to wait til DS9 finished so they could steal the costumes though, although Picardo would already have one). Could maybe have made the crew feel closer to home and still part of the fleet, despite the distance. It’s not like replicator energy was much of an issue by then.

I greatly prefer the 2-piece uniforms of 2368, with the high collar. My biggest complaint is the changing of the colors from gold-blue-red for Command, Science, Engineering/Security, to the reversed order colors of (dark) red, blue (later teal), and gold. This did kill the old jokes about being a "red shirt" on an away mission, but otherwise served no useful purpose (like a dunsel). I could understand having a teal lab coat for medical staff, not used by other science personnel, and I could understand a bright red for engineering and dark red for security. Honestly, it irks me every time I watch a Star Trek episode to this day.

Wasn’t there two versions of the phaser props one with holster attached and one where it’s not ? I saw the two piece as the number 2 uniform and the jump suite in voyager as number 1 number 2 like a tan military shirt and tie and the jump suite uniform was the standard military uniform I hated the V triangle admiral uniform horrible

Sorry guys, (In my opinion) I still like the S.T. O. ( Kirk,Pike, Spock) uniforms the best. I was in the Navy for 8 yrs. & we didn't have a whole lot of room to stow uniforms . We had dress blues (winter ), dress white (summer}, work whites(summer), Work blues ("Johnny Cashes"),& work dungaree . Which looked like prison uniforms , except you had u'r last name instead of a number!

while the 2tone design is great and iconic the TNG 1 uniforms really don't age well; really don't want to see everyone's turkey neck, and the 'scant' uniform looks like a hangover from the 1960s glad they moved to universal trousers later on. although i do love the earlier more 'bling' admiral and dress uniforms. and i love the captains jacket variant, looks very comfortable.

Gosh, the admiral uniforms look utterly rediculous. Especially the scant version with the thick gold rim. Looks like carnival. WTF The normal duty uniforms are classics though.

A few things, even to this day, I've never understood. If Data is the science officer, why is he wearing a gold uniform and not blue? Gold is the color worn by both engineering staff and security personel. I've never understood why security doesn't have it's own color.

Starfleet are not very well organised. They make uniforms with no pockets... put the bridges of starships on top of the saucer section and doesn't train Starfleet personnel to use assault rifles along with other firearms against the Borg. Instead they rely on phasers which is like shooting blanks

It actually is a thing that Gene Roddenbury was very clear on, there should be no pockets. I have no idea why. The top coats worn for away missions in TMP and TWoK had pockets, some of Crusher's lab coats had pockets others didn't (Zimmerman hologram didn't) and Torres' one had a top pocket, but that's your lot.

To my knowledge it wasn't so much that there shouldn't be pockets but that he figured future fabric would have ways to have pockets without looking like it. Same thing with zippers, he didn't want them to show but obviously they had to get in somehow in-universe too, just probably with magic super velcro or something. The problem with that is: good luck getting that across with 60's and 80's television budgets. It was easier to just not have actual pockets and imply the existance of invisible ones. They actually occasionally hinted at pockets being present when someone produced a Type 1 handphaser out of nowhere. As for clothes lacking pockets... ever shopped for lady pants? This is totally a thing. I assume for similar reasons as secondary considerations on TV: not having pockets slims down the outline. Especially on skintight ladyuniforms.

Actually, two episodes come to mind where Geordi pulled a phaser from one of these "hidden" pockets: The Mind's Eye - where he starts to slide the phaser from his pocket and then hastily slid it back in again when Chief O'Brien started talking to him about the transporter. The second time was in the earlier episode Samaritan Snare where a Packled pulled Geordi's phaser from his pocket. They are there (at least one anyway), just hidden.

am I the only one still get's unbelievably frustrated at the red attire for surgeries, it bugs the everlasting hell out of me, of all the colours, why red?
