After putting out 250+ Autodesk Inventor Tutorials and then hanging up my 3D mouse, I take a look at what's on offer on KZbin these days and whether they're any good. Not intended to throw shade, but I say what I see!

This is actually a super valuable series. As someone who is trying to get into creating more tutorials myself it is helpful to see what to avoid. And just as I expected: I do a lot of the things you pointed out in this Video. Thanks.

Nice series, as I'm planning to become an instructor as a side gig, so I will take your advice here. If you could also create a video on the best practices one should consider when modelling, I'd be really thankful.

Really enjoying this series. I'm a teacher and I make video tutorials so that students can work at their own pace, so this feedback is great for how I can improve. Sorry that youtube doesn't reward your efforts, but your expertise is hugely appreciated!

My activities on KZbin have gotten me some pretty decent gigs to be fair off the platform, it's given me exposure in a niche, but yea the output doesn't match the input in this field when it comes to purely what KZbin offers! I accepted that a long time ago and was when I moved onto different things other than tutorials to try and expand beyond that.

Did you watch any of his other videos? I agree with what you said though, very well spoken, concise and to the point.

Nope this isn't really an entire channel or person evaluation series, it's just find a single tutorial and comment on/react to what I see. There may be times that I look at one or two other videos but the point isn't to look at a broad range of videos and find the best and worst, looking at those could come as part of future episodes in this series!

Works on so many levels. Review of a tutorial vid, constructive criticism for content producers and a tutorial on adaptive springs all in one.

That's the plan! Some will be good, some will be abysmal, I'm curious to see which attract the most interest... my review of good or bad tutorials, basically education vs entertainment! Or I can just alternate between the both of them like I'm doing now!

I also don't like when tutorials have small text because its big screen. But I also have a big screen, 1440p, and I don't know how to increase the UI font. How can I do it? 😔

Yeah, I agree that is a big problem with tutorials. On more modern laptops, you can zoom into videos like the pinch gesture on phones using the trackpad. This gesture is like ctrl + scroll if the trackpad/trackpad driver is too old. I'm trying to figure out how to get a trackpad onto the desktop, but the options are to salvage a trackpad and DIY a connector or pay lots of money for the first party Brydge w-touch. Or maybe a way to simulate a trackpad zoom with a mouse. Possibly vertical video tutorials would solve this issue.

Right click on your desktop and go to display settings, then under "scale & layout" increase the scale from 100% to either 125% or 150%, that scales all the Windows UI elements but keeps a native resolution of 1440p. I'm on a 4K laptop right now at actual 4K, but my scaling is set to 250% else I wouldn't be able to see anything!

There's a channel called Tyler Beck of Tech and Espresso who does that kind of tutorial (joints, springs, design challenges etc) but on Fusion360, not Inventor. Don't know if that might interest you at all 🤷‍♂️👍

@@Neil3D If I can get a legal copy of Inventor, I'll start to post again. Besides, just because I'm retired, well I'd still like to stay current as long as I can. Also makes a good fall back if I feel like working again.

@@fjnagle2nd Hey Frank, Try volunteering at a local school that has an engineering program. They may be teaching CADD in some of their classes. That "may" allow you access to an educational license. Only problem is they seem to be pushing Fusion 360 for schools but the school will still have access to Inventor (and all the other Autodesk products). They may also have other programs like robotics or machining that they could use help with. Keeps your skills sharp and benefits the students. Seems like a lot of teachers learned CADD along with their students and don't have the real world experience that takes learning to the next level.

🤔 It's a good technique but only useful for presentation purposes. In the real world, springs like that have their last coils flattened and ground so that they keep the spring acting parallel to the motion axis. Inventor can model those properly in Design Accelerators mode. If you were thinking of getting back into tutorials Neil, that's a good area to look at. Getting all those parameters correct so that the calculation actually produces a spring can be tricky. OK... so you probably won't get a million views from it!

Last time I checked which I must admit was a loooooong time ago, the design accelerator spring generator either modelled a "dummy" cosmetic spring which didnt actually exist as a model, or it was unable to be animated/simulated like this... can't remember which one it was but that's why I ended up doing the tutorial that I did in the first place... the accelerator couldn't do it. Whether it can now or not, dunno, but I'm sure I would have read something or heard about it unless it's flew under the radar!
@rolandcraggs348
@rolandcraggs348 2 жыл бұрын
As a hobbyist with no professional experience, if I wanted the flattened lead-in and lead-out on the spring and animated, if design accelerator can't do it, I'd model the spring as in the tutorial but instead of adjusting the spring by it's diameter to fit, make it intrude into the fixed base and follower, then use boolean cut to shape the spring ends. Don't know if that would break the animation or not but if you need an animation and a manufacturable part in the same build, it might work 🤷‍♂️
