Been a rider since 11. Old school? Yep. But as you sort of pointed out the market for a dual sport or strictly trail travel at slower technical riding speeds on lighter weight machines would be cool for a lot of riders. Cannot tell you how many times I got tired of clutching up on the more extreme terrain that required you to slow up, speed up, etc. Much like off roading a 4WD, you want to go slow as possible, fast as needed. And clutching all day in that kind of situation tends to tax out even the healthiest riders. Big dual sports.. forget it. Does not matter which drive system it is, they are going to wear you down in technical stuff. If you are a town commuter, an auto would save you some grief as well. But I would not like to see all of the industry go down this road. Having choices are great.

I had a GS that I occasionally rode off road. It was a heavy pig (550 lbs) and I was only good for one or two pickups if I dropped it. The situation where I might drop it was starting off up a steep rooty or rocky hill and the engine stalled. If this new automated system reduces the chance you'll stall or stink out your clutch, I would be for it. By the way I've put well over 150,000 miles on motorcycles, been riding since I was 16, I know how to use a clutch.

agreed .i have used clutch too much. after I get a xadv i think auto is micj better. and the new gs adv with automatic is genius. rider can focus on road and views when traveling. and if you wanna twisted road leaning fun the auto to manual model is even quicker than Quick shifter

I think you are off on assumining this technology is designed for riders or potential riders that are averse to using a clutch. In some cases, like a Honda Rebel, that may be true, but a Goldwing is obviously not a beginner or first time rider bike. I had a 2008 FJR1300AE with Yamaha's YCCS. Fast forward to 2015 I bought , and still have, a BMW S1000XR with Shift Assist Pro. It has a clutch lever to get started, then foot lever quickshifter up and down that is seamless and shifts faster than I ever could with a traditional setup. This new tech allows for no clutch lever with an option to manually shift with a foot lever, or go full automatic. My point is shift assist, (many manufactures), and now full automatic, (Honda and soon BMW) are usually found on faster, bigger bikes because they are more efficient and flat out work, not because the manufacturers are trying to appeal to the new rider demographic....quite the opposite actually.

Remember the 50cc Honda Cub which featured a semi automatic transmission? No clutch but a foot shift lever? You rev the engine in 1st, close the throttle, shift into 2nd and open the throttle again; close the throttle and shift again. Millions of Cubs all over Asia, easy to ride with one hand on the bar. That one came out in 1958. Honda also produced a 450 twin in the 80s with a torque converter, so not a full automatic.

@@PrimoStracciatella dct makes the bike heavier than ASA! i also quite like the X-adv because of its gearbox, the BMW GS makes me hesitate because of its size but after the announcement of ASA i feel more confident if riding it

Seems obvious that this feature will be pushed hard on the upcoming R1300RT. Like how Honda pushes hard for DCT on the Goldwing. Also, curious to know if the optional gear lever shift does a good job simulating a real shift... I'm thinking about paddle shifters on cars... good versions (think Porsche, and others) make it so that when you hit the paddle the shift feels instantaneous and mechanical - as if you were actually manipulating the gear. Versus poorly integrated paddle shifters... you hit the paddle and there's an obvious delay before the shift occurs making the paddles seem obviously like buttons versus a real connection to the transmission. Of course, they are all buttons at the end of the day, but the execution of the system as a whole is a big difference maker. Either way, I like a manual trans so this doesn't personally appeal to me. But any technology that opens doors for new riders, I totally support.

Albeit rare as prime rib it can happen and when it does duck zhit up. And once it happens it happens again, like the hole gets bigger. I thinx this system has a hidden benefit too be revealed next year after follows huge power increases with lightened engine. ✋🐱👍

Agree. It's better if you know how to clutch and shift. After 50+ bikes of all sizes over several decades I came across a used Honda NC750S DCT. Even though I was looking for the cheaper manual I found a good deal on a DCT version. And I was sold! I wouldn't have believed it myself if you'd told me that from that point on I'd only get a bike with DCT. And easy handling because of the low weight distribution; tank under the seat. And a practical storage compartment for your helmet, like a scooter. And lots of torque from way low. And great fuel economy, 3,5L/100 km. And all that with HONDA quality for less than 10 grand. That's what I'd spend my hard earned money on, not on a over-bred GS. Using your left foot is cheating! :)

Aside from new riders I was thinking of my Dad; older folks stuck in stop/go traffic where constant starting/stopping makes the left hand hurt! Excited to try it!

I agree. Most folk give up driving manual transmission cars once they lose clutch control which is why I recommend to friends shifting to automatics whilst still young enough to learn. I think this tech will enable BMW to sell one or two more new bikes to old farts like me🤣

Ooh, I know! Why don't they put a gyroscope on the bike so that riders don't even have to balance. The bike will just do it on its own. Better yet! Put AI in the bikes computer, and it will go out and ride trails for you, so you don't have to!
