@@BlackBirdieGolf Its more that BMW realized that the old Gen is dying out, the people who want to have a high quality vehicle but do everything with full control on everything. Its the same in the cars, they stepped back from RWD in the BMW 1 (must be their first car with no RWD since they were founded) and they now using automatic transmission more and more (and actually useful ones, early ATs from BMW were the worst shit ever), since younger drivers dont wanna stir the gasoline anymore. Also with more and more extrem regulations of exhaust gases from the EU and the cost for BEVs its very likely that many people will ride on 2 tires in the future, since its much cheaper, and the bans on fossil fuel motors here are mostly towards cars, not motorcycles or scooters. So its a smart move to go into more and more things like this, making it easer even for total idiots to ride a bike.

It's been somewhat of a surprise with KTM, BMW, Yamaha all announcing new automated shifting models this year. I think it's great to have this as an option for those riders who need or desire it.

Not really a surprise. EU regulation came into effect in July to require cars, trucks and buses to include speed limiting technology and other tech. Bikes were exempt from this because the technology was not there, but manufacturers can see the writing on the wall and as those requirements are easier to implement on auto bikes manufacturers are preparing.

I think the e-clutch is fantastic. Much more so than a DCT. I love shifting but had a foot injury that limits my ankle range of motion that makes shifting difficult. So, I could see that for people with foot or left hand motion issues, this is a game changer. So people may frown on this technology but they aren’t considering how many more riders this will attract into riding and how this will allow older riders to keep riding.

If you unexpectedly rev too low and the engine starts to jerk (think of rough terrain or steep bends in the mountains), you need your manual clutch. Period. And furthermore, one of the things that makes motorcycling fun for me is that I can operate the machine myself and play with the wide variety of possibilities. Honda put AT in premium bikes first but almost immediately it was an option on a budget machines which was like saying to whole market "Look we are so sure about our new technology that we can put it in commuter bikes". Great respect. I doubt the problem with sales on new GS is due lack of automatic transmission, because previous GS didn't have such thing and was selling like crazy, especially if you think about the premium price tag. I am very curious about the reliability of this design, but we will need to wait few years to find out.

For instance, what do you do if the engine seizes and the back wheel locks up if you can't pull the clutch in to roll away from the skid? You fall off is what you do. I was alongside my brother as his engine seized while he was on a bike on motorway with a juggernaut less than 10 metres behind him at 110kmh. If he hadn't been able to pull in his clutch immediately he would have gone under the truck and perished in that moment.
