My 2010 Jetta SportWagen TDI has over 116,000 miles on the clock and still drives like new. Very tight suspension and no interior squeaks or rattles. Would buy another again, but really want the 4Motion. I always drive the DSG in manual mode, and shift into 6th gear at 30 MPH (1000 RPM). The 236 lb-ft of torque has enough grunt to take you from 35 to 80 without shifting. I average about 40 MPG on the highway at 75-80 MPH...

two drawbacks of the Mk7 TDI; the added expense and complexity of the AdBlue DEF system and DEF refills The rear suspension is downgraded to a twist-beam rear axle, as opposed to the independent rear suspension in the Mk6, they needed space for the AdBlue tank, so that's why the rear suspension was downgraded Mk6 models (2010-2014) do NOT use AdBlue (no urea scavenging system) and have independent rear suspension, but also get 10 HP less, and *technically* a few MPG less (around 3 MPG less)

Small correction about the Jetta wagon. The Jetta was a separate model sold in Europe and had wagon version along side the Golf wagon. In Germany at least, the Jetta was called the Bora, but again it was it's own model separate from the Golf, offered as a sedan or wagon vs the Golf's hatch/wagon variant.

Roman, just an honest tip when you drive a TDI...never floor it!! The TDI seem to be much faster when you use 70-90% throttle because it will make much better use of the lower diesel torque band and it won't plateau very much at all!! Just give it a try!!

How does the torsion beam axle feel on the TDI, compared to the independent rear suspension on the TSI?
@TFLcar10 жыл бұрын
We didn't have a chance to drive the TSI. It takes hours just to shot the car for a review and there just wasn't enough time to drive both versions.
@izoyt9 жыл бұрын
On 2.0 tdi model you get independent rear suspension . In real life, you wouldn't notice difference, really, expect if you drive it on track (but it's not track car). P.S.: This is one big/heavy guy, he will make any car small. Look for some another review for interior space perception with regular sized dude.
@theonlyboknoy9 жыл бұрын
Actually, in the USA, the TDI has the torsion beam axle because VW needed to make room for the AdBlue tank. Hence, the question that I posted. Check it out at www.vw.com/models/golf-sportwagen/trims/2016/2016-tdi-sel-trim/ then click on 'View Automatic Specs' under Full Specs. Then, choose 'Technical'. In other parts of the world, the AdBlue tank is not required so the TDI models come with the independent rear suspension.
@izoyt9 жыл бұрын
Ok, makes sense i guess. In EU, only 2.0 tdi model have independent rear suspension (and from 1.4 tsi on i think), not 1.6, which i own (blumotion model).

Is the 2015 TDI Golf Sportwagen lacking the rear independent suspension like it is in the 2015 TDI Golf?
@parasharkchari9 жыл бұрын
Yippie Yes, it is. The TDI version of the wagon went with a torsion beam rear suspension simply because the packaging is more compact, thereby giving it some room for the urea tank. Most of the reviews I've been reading suggest that the effect of that solid rear axle is not noticeable at all on decent roads under normal conditions even when you corner hard, but if you are pushing it on accel+braking or you are driving on crappy roads, it will become plainly apparent.
@yippie68629 жыл бұрын
Parashar Krishnamachari I owned both a 2006 Jetta and a 2008 Passat, both had independent rear suspensions. One time I test drove the next Jetta model, (2011 I think) that used to come with the torsion beam suspension and I could definitely feel the crappy rear end dynamics of it. It felt stiff and unresponsive. I was thinking about buying this new Sportwagen TDI, however, I will never buy one now unless VW adds an IRS.
@parasharkchari9 жыл бұрын
Yippie My suspicion on why the reviewers seem to think that is probably that the rear suspension behavior on the Sportwagen in gasoline guise without the torsion beam is probably not that stellar to begin with.... certainly not in the same league as the GTI or Golf R. If that was their comparison point, I suppose there would be pretty drastic words, but that would also be apples and oranges. Well, there may be some hope for the 4motion version, but I'm not holding my breath. Pretty much everything VW has ever offered has stood a few notches beneath their identical offerings in other countries and damn near all the technological and high-end manufacturing capacity they have at their disposal is exclusively reserved for the Audi nameplate.

BMW has a 5-link rear suspension. VW has more cargo space vs BMW (66.5 v 53, respectively). The $13k difference will hardly be consumed by depreciation. But, BMW does offer a diesel wagon, so there is competition. If you can afford the BMW, you can shop the VW. If you don't need all the features of the BMW, you can buy the VW.

Everyone complains how AD Blue is an "Added Operational Cost". If you look at the real world numbers from current gen TDI Passat drivers, who use AD Blue, you are talking about $10-$20 to top off the AD Blue tank every 10k miles. This isn't a big deal. After looking under a MK7 Golf, and comparing it to the MK6s, it is sad to see the De-contention that VW did with these. MK6s have an Aluminum Subframe, and lower suspension arms, and a fully independent rear suspension. MK7s have stamped steel suspension and subframe, and a solid rear beam suspension, yuck! The Oil Filter placement in the MK7s really suck as well, thanks to that air to water intercooler.

Has VW resolved the DSG low speed (under 20 mph) lurching and chatter that haunted my (and so many others') 2010 GTI and 2012 Jetta TDI ? The DSG made those ownership experiences disappointing, and downright embarrassing when carting passengers. Loved the steering & chassis, loved the economy on my TDI, but oh...not that clackety DSG!
@AJP256510 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, I believe all DSG's have that issue. I've read reviews on the Nissan GTR and Mitsubishi Evo MR, and they are really bad. On our Passat diesel I only notice it when backing out of our driveway, or while trying a quick three point turn.
@toyota420xp10 жыл бұрын
I find it weird that in the golf and presumably the golf wagon the tsi gasoline cars don't have a dsg but a independent rear suspension. While the tdi has the dsg and a less sophisticated beam suspension.
@AJP256510 жыл бұрын
Gregory Perkins I hear yeah Gregory. I understand what Jason is saying it's quirky, but it shifts quick, and very smoothly in the Passat application. It does lurch when it's placed in park a few inches, and it does get awkward in certain slowly executed maneuvers. Maybe more so in the GTI because if think shifts harder in that application which would account for the mileage, and acceleration gain on the GTI DSG over the manual. Although the Passat manual gets better mileage then the DSG model.

Nik Brudar Yeah, one thing that would lean me to the A3 is the fact I'm in NYC, and it's like what...at least 7 or 8 inches shorter, makes a pretty big difference.
@nikb652810 жыл бұрын
Henry Grimm oh, yeah that can be important. Why are you looking at the longer models then? Why not take a normal Golf 7th gen?
@sic22l10 жыл бұрын
Sportwagen has more space. A3 - everything else.

Huge mistake not offering AWD. That would have made it perfect.

Good news everyone, VW plans add AWD in a year or two.

WISHED they did the Steel Timing Chain, on the TDI. Nylon Timing Belt is for the birds. Had to go to Gas 2.5, to get he Steel Timing Chain.
@JamaicanMeCrazy9 жыл бұрын
***** I wondered why they did that. Apparently the belt doesn't sound as loud. Personally I'd rather a nice sturdy strong timing chain than a belt that can fail and destroy my engine.

Is this car nowadays also avaliable in the USA? I feel sorry for the fact that your streets become more and more boring when this will be a succes. Horrible and boring car, I see it everyday here in the Netherlands.
@screamindimon10 жыл бұрын
Yes Lauryan I think you can order the wagon here in US.But wagons have become unpopular here over the last decade.People with families demand 3 things.Power, room, and gas mileage.The "crossover"has replaced the wagon.I own a 2009 Ford Taurus x.It has all the features that American families like.There are a lot of car companies that produce the crossover body style.But rarely do you see a VW wagon anymore here.Although there are wagon enthusiasts.
