I've driven two of them. My local Toyota Dealer has I think 25 sitting on their lot.. yes collecting dust, no joke. I wasn't impressed, the engine has torque but the story ends there. Driving is weird as the turbos whine up and then the electric turns off at speed and your left with an underwhelming, underpowered 4 banger in a heavy SUV. Lots of cheap feeling parts. If it was 45k I could understand.

In Australia, the Prado (what you know as the Land Cruiser), is only available as a mild hybrid 2.8 Turbo Diesel 4 cyl. One reviewer took it through a water crossing, probably about a foot / 30 cm deep, he went a bit quick to get a good picture of water flying (for the video)... it got water in the air cleaner, got into the hybrid system (uses air from the air cleaner to cool hybrid system ... possibly inverter, not sure)... two days later, it died. the water killed it... I would drive my sedan through water herder than he drove that Prado...and I am confident it would not fail me in the way this brand new "toyota tough" 4x4 failed him. Another criticism here, concerns the hybrid battery, it takes up a lot of cargo space in the rear... the prado has been a favourite of the off road crowd. and they use that space for off road gear.... fridge, camping / house battery, storage drawers etc.... now it is full of hybrid battery... people are not very impressed with the new model here.

Sounds like those garbage Broncos here in the US. The alternator is mounted low on the engine and if you go through a water crossing you run the risk of submerging it and having it fail very soon afterwards. In one of the videos I saw this happen, several Wranglers and Gladiators went through the same crossing followed by 4Runner and none of those vehicles had a failed alternator, just the Bronco lol.

The point you made at 13:00 was perfectly said. People always run to the comments and beg manufacturers to build XYZ, then the manufacturer does so and then no one puts their money where their mouth is when the time comes. The majority of the comments are people not even in the market to buy the damn thing, but feel the need to comment on it. I purchased the LC250 standard trim model which was about $15K cheaper than the First Edition, yet has all the same bells and whistles for off-roading purposes. While there are some definitely objective complains about it (fuel tank size is a joke, the 2.4L definitely is not the smoothest engine out there, etc), this thing is overall a beast and I have been loving it so far.

@@icuyouseemeif Toyota DOES release the 300 series in America, will it sell as well as the Prado did? better yet, will it sell as much as the Sequoia did? the reason that the full size LC was discontinued in America was due to laughably pathetic sales figures. sales figures also show that Americans just prefer the Sequoia over the Land Cruiser, which is why Toyota just decided to axe the big boy LC in favor of making the Sequoia the halo SUV in America. Bought the LC instead of the Overtrail. My loaded LC was $70K and has several features missing from the Overtrail. Leather is not an option, three zone climate control with roof vents aren't available, and the lack of physical controls makes the Lexus GX miserable to operate. Neither is perfect, just a series of trade-offs that allows someone to pick the right version for their wants and needs. For me, it was the LC and not particularly close. Having said that, if the LC came with the V6TT as an option, I might've chosen that powertrain over the hybrid 4.

@ While the LC and GX have the same underpinnings (TNGA-F architecture, wheelbase, sheet metal from the A-pillar on back), they have some significant differences mechanically - the engine, the transmission, and the suspension are entirely different. Even the brake system appears to be different. An argument can be made to buy either one, but a lot depends on what you value individually and your own likes/dislikes.

@AHungryHunky
@AHungryHunky 6 күн бұрын
The problem with that though is, at least from an outside perspective, looking in is that it's easy to lump even fairly middle ground opinions into either camp. I am not a car reviewer, I am not going to post an entire article in a YT comment section of what I like and dislike about a vehicle. If something stands out to me I will post it. For example I might post "I think the way the battery pack was integrated into this 58k vehicle is poorly done, and at that price point I expect something a little more seamless." Someone on the outside looking in would easily lump that into the "Pitchforks" category. Personally I think Toyota should just clean that up in a mid cycle refresh as well as offer more interior colors (I just hate black interiors, but seem to be cursed with them) Otherwise, if I could afford it I would happily own one of these.

Great video! For some context: I drive a Land Cruiser 200 that I bought new in 2015. This is my 4th LC since 1987. Drove both the 1958 and Land Cruiser Land Cruiser for several hours yesterday. I was not impressed. The engine noise, the wind noise, the lack of grunt, the cheap interior plastics, and the very high price contributed to the general feeling that we are getting ripped off. When I got back into my 200 it just made the feeling stronger. As a vehicle in general, the new LC250 isn’t bad. Actually quite nice. Even as a Land Cruiser it’s okay. But for all those issues for that price, it is very unappealing. This vehicle feels like a $40k vehicle, not a $60k (or more) vehicle. So many other choices at that price point. Sorry, but it is a miss.

The engine is def peppy and comparable to my 200s acceleration. Steering wheel w/ electronic steering is great around the parking lot and the trail too. The wheel wells being able to fit 35s without major modifications is GOAT. that said, my 250 isn't perfect. * i need a bigger fuel tank (having to fill up every 270-300 miles really sucks) * battery should've been lithium iron phosphate * cold weather battery management features should've been included. (climate control on in parking mode, being able to charge up the battery before the end of the day). * swing out rear door w/ tire mounted on the back * swaybar disconnect should be available on all trims * 12v battery needs to be in the engine bay for the winch hookup, there's plenty of room up there!

@@kingofthesofas Some of the Japanese engineering directors are really stubborn about how they build things and when a director changes so does the direciton of the project. This is why we get such a huge change between the 80 series 100 series and 200 series vs the LC250 and other TNGA-F products. It's great that they're very dedicated to the projects, but they don't ever do any actual peer interviews with people who open their wallet to pay for these vehicles. Similar to OG Italian craftsmen who're like, it's my way or GTFO. Tetsuya Tada and Sadaoyshi Koyari were the Lead Project Engineers for the J200. Keita Moritsu for the 250. The focus on the TNGA-F is for disability/mobility. That was a huge focus in the design language over the past decade leading up to 250. The choice to do away with the double tailgate probably had to do with making it easy to access wheelchairs. Though I feel like a side swinging door like the GX460/470 and FJ Cruiser would've been compatible w/ that goal. Plus they'd also be able to do a window that slides down like the 4runner.

Jason's review was the definitive Land Cruiser history and current model review. Also, check out Tinkerer's reviews. He actually puts the current gens on a lift and measures frame and drive parts to compare old vs. new. And even the service manager at my Toyota dealership told me to keep my FJ Cruiser if I wanted to keep off-roading because the new Land Cruiser "isn't as rugged (his words)." Toyota gave us in the US another mall cruiser with the hybrid. Give us the diesel or gasoline versions!
@WyattWill
@WyattWill 6 күн бұрын
The issue everyone has with the North America version is the drivetrain. The Land Cruiser is known for is being built for durability (which is why people buy Toyotas), even at the expense of new tech and power, and a gasser 4 cyl turbo hybrid does not seem like it will be long-term reliable. But if you change out cars within every 5 years then it's a non-issue. If we had the 2.8 diesel like the rest of the world I think more people would praise the new Land Cruiser. The Lexus GX and LX is a non-hybrid turbo 6 cylinder and the whole vehicle just seems more old school, built for more durability, and Land Cruiser-y. The new Land Cruiser seems like more like a more tech based FJ or 4Runner (Which is almost the same vehicle now) than the old school Land Cruiser. But it looks good and has a much cheaper base price than the older generation, the older generation is selling for more even now on the used market, which is why I think many people are buying them.

@aryesXNA The main complaint is how it makes power or how it feels when it makes power. It's high strung because you have to ring it out to get to the peak. Peak power is at 6000 rpms. That's not what you want in a Land Cruiser. Then there's questions about the hybrid battery from the average consumer.
@aryesXNA

@ I agree. I'm in Europe and have 2.8D on order (no hybrid here). It's slow, but I think it's fine. I want car to travel, speed is quite irrelevant if it can do highway comfortably. I'm happy there isn't hybrid here, I would probably just ignore the car if that happened.

While listening and watching all the new 4Runner first drive videos put out I noticed a few reviewers that stated the new 4Runner's engine feels smoother than the new Land Cruiser. In addition, the new 4Runner doesn't require premium fuel like the land cruiser and this is because the tuning for the land cruiser has to meet a global market while the 4Runner only has to meet the US market. I wonder if the tuning of the new Land Cruiser for premium fuel is causing it to run rougher than the new 4Runner, if the new 4Runner's engine truly does run smoother.

I would have bought the GX 550 overtrain, however, there is a major lack of supply in southwest USA, dealers in Phoenix and surrounding area price gouging several thousand above MSRP (like 10k + more). bought landcruiser premium trim instead. It may not be as nice as a Lexus, but is very nice with loads of features and creature comforts. Sure I'm concerned regarding longevity, I may lose a chunk of money with this decision, but only time will tell. For now I will enjoy my landcruiser and the outdoor time it provides with my family.

The LC premium is nicer than the GX Overtrail in several ways...leather seats, physical controls, and three zone climate control with roof vents. My problem with the new land cruiser is the hybrid technology, and the lack of any real benefits with improved mileage! The fact that you have to use premium gas? You have a very expensive vehicle, that has reduced space in the back because of the battery; like I said, is it really that beneficial? Then there’s the low ground clearance. My guess is this drivetrain is a risk for longevity, not to mention the cost of upkeep, make it a risk after all the recent drivetrain problems from Toyota‘s new product line. Don’t believe for a second that I am anti-Toyota, because I’ve owned a Camry, FJ cruiser, Tacoma before!

Finally an honest review. For the internet haters, the "no one wants a 4-cyclinder" crowd, turns out it was the V8 200 series that no one wanted, check the sales stats. Money talks, if you want that bigger engine and "Real Land Cruiser", head on over to Lexus and pick up an LX for $115,000+. For people that think the LC is too expensive, read that last sentence again. You want more car, well you're paying almost double the 1958 trim for an LX700. You want a cheaper domestic product like a Ford or Jeep? Enjoy being stranded when something inevitably breaks before 50k miles. For the car reviewers, I think this video was a good lesson for trying to put yourself in the average buyers shoes. People coming from a 5th gen 4Runner, Wrangler, older 4WD vehicle. The LC250 is an obvious step above those, and where most buyers are coming from or have previous experience with. I get it you reviewers drive awesome cars every week, but the average consumer doesn't.

Just closing the door, it sounded cheap, and that translated into also being loud on the road. Power was OK, but uninspiring. Being hybrid didn’t seem to have much impact on mileage improvement. Honestly, I don't think anyone would really care what the 0-60 would be in a Land Cruiser. It's not about speed with a rig like that, like Jason said, it's about effortless power, which is what gives you the confidence to tackle off-road trails. And this Prado does not have it....anywhere. Toyota's obsession with putting a hybrid in literally everything is a mistake, and it shows in this anemic and underwhelming drive train. It's overly complicated, poorly executed, and I wouldn't trust it anywhere off road. The 2nd row seats are way too small for a vehicle this size. The passenger doors don't open wide enough to load gear, larger adults, or car seats. The cargo area is compromised with the ridiculous battery pack. And in no trim is it worth what they're asking. There are literally acres of cheap materials in this thing, inside and out. If you want a hybrid and tons of MPGs, buy a Sienna. Done. If you want an off road rig, you put a manual transmission and a simple, NA, bulletproof engine in it that people can trust. Drop all of the incessant interference by electronic gimmickry and just keep it simple. Nobody wants to take something this twitchy off road, only to have it brick itself in the middle of nowhere because one of it's computers is having a tantrum. I'm frankly amazed to hear that Toyota has sold any of these. I think the LC250 looks fantastic from a design perspective, but it's overpriced trash in its execution. And that's not because I'm a Land Cruiser purist, I'm just judging the thing on its lack of merits. Toyota phoned it in and built a $35K SUV with a $70K price tag. And you can't really blame people for not buying more of the LC200, which was ridiculously overpriced for what it was, and say that's the reason we now have this slightly cheaper, but still ridiculously overpriced LC250 in its place. You're missing the point in a comparison like that. People want Toyota to build an affordable, reliable, tough SUV they can fall in love with and be proud to still own 20 years later, which is what the LC heritage has always been about, but they just don't do that anymore.

Meadmaker. I agree with everything you said. There is one huge problem. Gov regulations don’t allow car makers to build what we want. Simple reliable naturally aspirated bulletproof vehicles. Price isn’t really an issue. People will pay for something that will last 400k miles. IMO. EPA refs kill naturally aspirated engines. Safety regs at a bunch of bs that we don’t need or might not want and that’s why base model cars of today have more tech than highest level trims of 20 years ago. The simple car from Toyota is dead. Sadly.

The smaller fuel efficient engines are a mandate from government. It's too late to unravel the whole engine issue now, it will have to wait for a face lift in 3 years times.

@@cpdennis11 - The V6 is available in the GX550, which is the exact same platform and a significantly better power train. So that's possible. The manual transmission and 2.4L 4-cyl is available in the Tacoma, which is the exact same platform and a significantly better power train. So that's possible. Deleting all of the off-road electronic gimmickry would have zero effect on MPG. So that's possible. These are all options that currently exist within the platform and comply with government mandates, and would arguably make the vehicle significantly better, but Toyota has CHOSEN not to implement them. So, it's not down to governmental oversight, it's down to Toyota's decision making. It would take zero re-engineering to implement any of these changes, since they're already building them on that exact platform. The body shell is the only thing that's different, and it's literally interchangeable. It's the whole point of their shared architecture.

@@meadmaker4525 Yeah I don't know what these other guys are saying. It isn't government regulations. Otherwise no new cars would have V8's and we still see them. It's Toyota trying to appease their customers that are worried about the environment because of the fear mongering. It's not even about fuel economy. If these get at least 20MPG and the price was $20k lower, people are just simply not going to care about the MPG. You just have to understand what the trends are. The old guard at Toyota has mostly retired, and the younger people have been lied to about the environment so they don't mind making a unrefined 4 banger hybrid that makes them (and the customers) feel good. The fact that these have already sold so much proves that their strategy worked. If Toyota sold the 200 series for the same price, it would still not sell as well as this new Prado.

sure...which one do you own? Oh you don't...shocker. Have you even driven one? I doubt it and not off-road.

Look Toyota should just sell the 250 series in the US as a Prado like they do everywhere else and also bring back the original Land Cruiser.

Say what you want. Toyota was only selling 3000 land cruisers per year with the 200 series. That is totally unsustainable.

Toyota have got this absolutely wrong. Inwas a rusted on toyota landcruiser owner and worked 37 years in the auction industry. Ive had them all including 5 v8 79 series. Had a 300 and said it was a v6 diesel prado not a proper landcruiser and here we are. In australia they runthe 2.8 diesel and 8 speed auto with mild hybrid. The interior luggage are is a joke as too rear seat leg/foot room. Weve already seen one breakdown on a test. Water ingress into the electrical generator system. Another the suspension fell out. The fuel economy is no better than the old model because its heavier. And the prices here are in the range of the old 200 series prices for what essentially is a hilux wagon. Toyota has utterly lost me.

In my humble opinion, stop comparing your car reviews to other KZbinrs. You guys have a lot of experience and a lot of actual off-roading miles under your belts. Don’t sell your self short. Thanks for another great video 👍

He was making his opinion relative. With no one roasting it, he may have sounded more negative, so he was able to play good cop and publish a favorable review. Well, that’s what it seems like.

Just no, no, and no on that powertrain. I do not like it and how it sounds. Also, isn’t the ground clearance lackluster? Also, Lexus offers 1 year longer warranty than Toyota. Wait for a 1 year old gx550 to help offset the cost difference.
