@@Michelle-oz1jc they are quite different. The 1980s L300's are quite different to the modern Delica. we call this MITSUBISHI DELICADO in 🇵🇭, from the Cebuano term "delikado" which is Spanish for delicate. the term evolved locally to mean risky or dangerous instead, more like 'Peligroso' in Spanish. this is due to substandard conversion from RHD to LHD by Filipino worksmen who imported these vans from Japan in the 90s and 2000s. still a very capable off roader being a cab forward config. it has superior visibility when tackling non-roads and dense jungles of our tropical country. This used to be our go-to vehicle when I used to work on a mining firm in the Mindanao Island. very special indeed. Sad to see Mitsubishi not anymore an innovative company it once was.

Driving an old school diesel takes a lot of patience. You cannot drive it like a gasoline engine. If you have a heavy foot it will definitely puff a smoke, diesel engines doesn't like to be floored every time. Try driving it with a light foot on the accelerator pedal. Keep the air filters and the throttle body clean all the time. Black smoke and slow acceleration is a good sign that your engine is starving air.

@ 8:12 As far as I know, all Mitsubishi Vans and SUVs have the seat foldback feature for sleeping... At least my 2014 Outlander did. I used it many times at rest stops during trips to and from my folks home. I don't know about the new models, but my Outlander also featured a third-row seating, and a hatch and lower gate opening combination to load cargo of any size, or could be used to just sit to enjoy the outdoors while shaded by the hatch acting as a canopy, and even as an umbrella on rainy days, or to comfortably sit on the lower gate to watch a fireworks display. It was such a perfect SUV, and such a joy to have. I never had any problems with it and always performed the maintenance on it right on time. On February 2020 At 140,000 miles I traded it for a brand-new 2021 KIA Seltos, which up to this day has proven to be a phenomenal vehicle, but I miss the Outlander with all the camping features. Some things are not meant to be traded. I still regret it up to this day.

@@MichaelArtelle Yeah, I wrote my comment as I was watching the video and didnt realize the Delica was based on the Montero/Pajero which would give a person some peace of mind on parts availibility.

Jay Leno said it best. Find an enthusiast forum for the vehicle of interest. This will be your gold mine for parts, especially that maintenance stuff. You can get cross referenced parts for the vehicle like oil filters, air filters, timing belts, accessory belts, etc. that will be an inevitable thing to contend with.

This Delica is currently available at Taiwan for over 30 years. Plenty parts available locally via FedEx or DHL.

I just saw one, on a trailer here in Los Angeles, CA yesterday. Its also popular in the Philippines, but since they are right-hand drive, They(importer) must convert the vehicle to left-hand drive before they can legally sell it.

Sad to say the Pajero/Montero/Shogun was already discontinued last March 2021.

I used to have a ‘87 Toyota 4WD van with manual transmission, low range, and manual locking hubs. It worked fine but was hard to work on.

I really like the black color on this unit, Up here in Canada these have been available for a while. I have a 93 Super Exceed same engine and transmission with the crystal lite roof in two tone blue and can run on biodiesel, but no tire carrier sadly. The "starwagon" designation only means passenger van that's it no special trim or options. Mitsubishi did sell this van in North America up to 1991 in 2wd called the Mitsubishi Van, I know stellar name choice, gas only though.

In australia this format of van is typical….. the tailgate is normal to us, the metric is, of course very normal and driving from the correct side. ;-) By the way, the most common delivery / work vans on the road were these in plan white, RWD, steel wheels and petrol engine (gas). They cost about usd $ 20k new. Typically they were retired before 150k miles ( I converted that for you mate) Toyota make a similar product called hiace, costs more, lasts a lot longer. Thanks for the video, it is interesting to see what is normal to me is so different for you guys stateside. I look forward to being able to visit again. Cheers mate.

Here in Australia the Star wagon was the name for the people movers / cargo vans by Mitsubishi in the 80 / 90s

Very cool rig. I had a 91 Montero and loved it. I let it go after 20 years because parts are hard to find and it was my only vehicle.

these vans either had the 4m40 and 4d56 engines, 4m40 offers more grunt but be careful as its injectors can crap out due to bad fuel. otherwise, practically bulletproof engines. Our pajero (4m40 engine) overheated due to a ruptured radiator, the engine kept chugging for 20 miles till the next repair shop. Just plugged the radiator and filled up with coolant, our pajero walked it off the next day like nothing happened. Gotta love those iron block and iron head engines
