Nathan's 1500 Sport is an example of what tends to happen to that era of Dodge Ram, Case's 2500 is an example of what its like, when either fixed or properly maintained, lol.

Well you know Dodge owners, always abusing and beating the heck out of their vehicles. Older Silverado owners do it too especially if it is a Z71. They'll thrash it off-road because of the upgraded suspension and locking rear diff and because of this the body will always be beat up which then later causes rust because they neglect to fix it.

How's the transmission? It's fine, it slips a little bit and leaks. so not fine
@TehShadowDeath

Dodge owner here... The one thing I noticed when the guy changed the fluid in the dodge is he never mentioned the bands. Dodge even says in it's manual to adjust the bands every time you change the fluid. The reason why is because the front band is on the side of the housing but the rear is inside the transmisison pan. This is one of the major problems with these transmissions. Nobody seems to do this and then when they get loose/wear down from usage the transmission starts slipping or banging into gear. That DTS for the torque converter solenoid though... Dodge transmissions are notorious for going through solenoids. There is actually a guide to convert it to use the GM version. These transmissions just have a torque converter solenoid, a OD solenoid, and a transducer because it's just an older transmission converted to electronic control. Another good fix for this is a shift kit which takes no time at all to do. The thing about these transmissions is once you do a shift kit for the valve body and new solenoids it'll be a damn strong transmission. I had one in my 96 with a 5.2L. The previous owner did a small shift kit but never adjusted the bands so when it drove it would always do this weird long shift like someone riding the clutch between gears. I fixed that, changed the solenoids while I was in there, the filter, and slapped it back together. It would down shift on demand and go. His shifting issues is also likely due to a sloppy TV cable adjustment too. Dodge still used those on these trucks to make the transmission downshift using hydraulic pressure. These trucks were literally designed so that you can work on them yourself without the need of a computer. The side effect is they require higher than normal maintenance.

@___MY ZQUAD IZ GODZILLA’z ___ i mean realistically they are, with a classic 1994-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 and 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500, 3500 and larger. . . . its extremely common for EVERY SINGLE LIGHT in the dash cluster to be on, with the understanding that these trucks are 20+ years old, patching them up every 5K miles isnt common with trucks built for working and being work trucks, so they take and run on the abuse, so ABS is shot, theres 2 lights on, spark plugs are dead and you have a misfire, theres another light, unstable oil pressure due to a leak (because the valve cover or oil pan gasket hasnt been replaced) theres another light, the list goes on, but even with all the lights on, all the things broken or needing repair, the trucks just keep going and going. and really the trucks deserve that hype, for case and example, the one that was passed down to me from my grandfather, the truck climbed mountains, bouncing between trees and over rocks for 2 decades, and had 1 set of spark plugs for 15 years, where every other brand saying "replace after 3 months" means and SHOWS a lot, and really all trucks are decent, they can do what they are specified to do, as to what they are, but when one in particular does that for FAR LONGER than any of the competition, it deserves the praise in my book

The real problem are some of the people that own them. And I do know there are the "Lemon" of the bunch every now and then. Chevy's and fords suffer from the cracked dashes, transmission issues and rust. Don't tell me I'm wrong either. I see half rotted fords running around with busted dashes almost every day. And chevy's had that crappy IFS system. So really it's just a choice that the buyer had to make. "Which poison Is gonna work best for me?"

Speaking from experience, changing the transmission fluid on an older vehicle with high miles is the automotive equivalent of Russian Roulette, knocking all that old clutch pack material with fresh fluid could cause all kinds of issues. Hopefully it just needs something simple, but unfortunately having been in the exact same spot with both a Dodge and a Ford, you should brace yourselves for a rebuild. I generally don’t change the fluid on automatic transmissions with over 100K miles unless either the fluid is contaminated, or if I’m doing a full valve body service. Because that fresh fluid is going to loosen something up, and it will likely end up in one of the tiny fluid passages.

He replaced it with a 3/4 ton dodge with the 721 Cummings in it. He was still driving that dodge when he passed away in 2008. I forget what year it was, but it was the last square body dodge. It always pissed him off because the next year was the body he liked best. His wasn't the only gm truck that had problems either. I blew a head gasket in my chevy twice in a one month period. DTC P0743: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID/TRANS RELAY CIRCUITS Circuit Description Circuit is monitored continuously while ignition is on. DTC sets if voltage detected on TCC at PCM does not match desired voltage. Possible Cause The following items may be area of concern: Fused B+ feed to transmission control circuit open. Transmission control relay defective. TCC solenoid control circuit open. TCC solenoid control circuit shorted to ground. TCC wire harness defective. Transmission control relay output circuit open. Transmission control relay output circuit shorted to ground. PCM defective. DTC P1765 is set. Transmission control circuit shorted to voltage. Solenoid and harness assembly defective. Diagnostic Procedure 1. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If good trip counter for DTC P0743 is not displayed or displayed count is not zero, go to step 16 . If good trip counter is displayed and displayed count is zero, go to next step. 2. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P1765 is also set, see DTC P1765: TRANS 12-VOLT SUPPLY RELAY CNTRL CIRCUIT . If DTC P1765 is not set, go to next step. 3. Using scan tool, read transmission DTCs. If DTC P0743, P0748 and P0753 are present, go to next step. If DTC P0743, P0748 and P0753 are not present, go to step 8 . 4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission solenoid harness connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, check fused transmission control relay output circuit at transmission solenoid connector terminal No. 1. If test light illuminates brightly, replace transmission solenoid assembly (internal transmission harness). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate brightly, go to next step. 5. Turn ignition off. Remove transmission control relay from underhood Power Distribution Center (PDC) or Integrated Power Module (IPM), as applicable. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, check fused B+ circuit at transmission control relay connector terminal No. 30 (terminal C3 on AB body). If test light illuminates brightly, remove test light and go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate brightly, repair circuit for open. If fuse is open, ensure to check for short to ground or high resistance in fused B+ circuit. 6. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and fused transmission control relay output circuit at transmission solenoid connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair relay output circuit for short to ground. 7. Using fused jumper wire, jumper fused B+ circuit (terminal No. 30 (terminal C3 on AB body) and transmission control relay output circuit (terminal No. 87 (terminal C5 on AB body) together at transmission control relay connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, check fused transmission control relay output circuit at transmission solenoid connector terminal No. 1. If test light illuminates brightly, replace transmission control relay. If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate brightly, repair relay output circuit for open. If fuse is open, ensure to check for short to ground or high resistance in relay output circuit. 8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector C2 (White) and transmission solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of TCC solenoid control circuit between PCM harness connector C2 (White) terminal No. 11 and transmission solenoid harness connector terminal No. 7. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair TCC solenoid control circuit for open. 9. Measure resistance between ground and TCC solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector C2 (White) terminal No. 11. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair TCC solenoid control circuit for short to ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. 10. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage of TCC solenoid control circuit. If voltage is more than .5 volt, repair TCC solenoid control circuit for short to voltage. If voltage is .5 volt or less, go to next step. 11. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between TCC solenoid control circuit and all other circuits at transmission solenoid connector. If resistance is less than 100 k/ohms between TCC solenoid control circuit and any other circuit, repair circuit as necessary. If resistance is 100 k/ohms or more, go to next step. 12. Ensure ignition is off. Remove transmission control relay from underhood Power Distribution Center (PDC) or Integrated Power Module (IPM), as applicable. Measure resistance of TCC solenoid control circuit between fused transmission control relay output circuit at transmission solenoid connector terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector C2 (White) terminal No. 11. If resistance is 25-60 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 25-60 ohms, replace transmission solenoid assembly (internal transmission harness). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. 13. Measure resistance between ground and TCC solenoid control circuit at transmission solenoid connector terminal No. 7. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in transmission solenoid assembly. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. 14. Measure resistance between TCC solenoid control circuit and governor pressure solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector C2 (White) terminals No. 8 and 11. Resistance should be 28-68 ohms. Measure resistance between TCC solenoid control circuit and 3-4 shift solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector C2 (White) terminals No. 11 and 21. Resistance should be 50-120 ohms. If resistance for both measurements is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace transmission solenoid assembly (internal transmission harness). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. 15. Measure resistance between TCC solenoid control circuit and all other transmission solenoid assembly circuits at appropriate PCM harness connector terminals. If resistance is less than 100 k/ohms between TCC solenoid control circuit and any other circuit, replace transmission solenoid assembly (internal transmission harness). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If resistance is 100 k/ohms or more, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. 16. Conditions required to set DTC are not currently present. Inspect all applicable connectors and terminals for damage. Repair as necessary. If connectors and terminals are okay, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Testing is complete.
