I owned a Ridgeline 2014 and can't wait for the new 2017 to come out for sale. Much nicer interior and up to par with technologies. Call it a truck, call it a SUV with a bed, don't matter, it does not need to please everybody, it just has to please it's owner. Understand, there are so many cars, suv's and trucks out there just right for you. you just need to figure out your lifestyle and choose the one for you. Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Honda's etc all are good vehicles, just get the right one for you

I drive about 1,500 miles a month; I would pick this car-like truck over any of them because of it's comfort and fuel economy. I really like the new Ridgeline because of it's utility and features; a comfortable ride, roomy interior, great style, decent size bed for home depot trips, good fuel economy, and torque vectoring. I believe it's a great value! It may not be the right deal for people feeling as if they need to prove something, but a great deal for people who want the most for their money.

Agreed. People who need to tow 6,000 pounds or do serious offroading would be better off with a Tacoma, Ranger, or Colorado. But for 95% of suburbanites, they will never be doing those things. Or, if a person can afford only one vehicle, the Ridgeline would be the best all-around truck: very comfortable ride, but some serious towing capability. There are many SUVs and crossovers that can't tow as much as a Ridgeline, and those that do usually need a dedicated towing package that is an extra cost option. On the Ridgeline, it's standard equipment. Even some pickups only offer a towing package as an option and not standard equipment. I'm looking at a Ridgeline to replace my Avalon for going camping as well as being a daily and long-distance commuter.

They each have their place. No doubt that daily commuting is better with the fwd/and system. Snow driving will be better with the fwd/and system. 4wd with a variable speed transfer case will be better in heavy offroad terrain, more durable for pulling heavy loads with limited traction. They built the ridgeline for what 90% of people actually do with their trucks on a daily basis. No it wont tow 7klbs, it dosent have the ground clearance, or the frame on cab, but it does what it was designed to do better than any other truck in its category. It's not what the other trucks are by design. I'm considering one because it would fit my needs, I need to be able to haul dead deer from where I hunt-to the processors, tow a zero turn, haul small building materials. And the ridgeline can easily handle those tasks with more refinement and more room than any of its direct competition.

+Powered by Honda That is because all you guys want to hear is this the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think Roman has been extremely fair. FWD, and AWD is not going to impress people looking for a pickup truck, it just won't, sorry. He did say how comfortable it is the entire video, what more do you want? That is Honda's selling point anyway. Oh wait don't forget about the bed exciters.
@Gazziza29

+Powered by Honda He was a little harsh but I also appreciate an honest perspective. He could have easily sat back and thrown softball questions to the Honda guy and he would have made it seem like the best truck ever. Sometimes you need someone to ask the hard questions, play devils advocate, and be critical or else you're just going to see another review that is little more than a Press Release. There are lots of reviews on KZbin that are glorified advertisements and I'm glad that TFL Truck is not one of them. They might be biased but you also have to consider that this is TFL Truck and he's looking at it from a traditional truck buyers perspective. I'm sure anyone who is considering a midsize has the Taco and Colorado/Canyon at the top of their list and these are the exact same questions, preconceptions, and notions that Honda will have to answer if they want people to switch over.

+Don Juan True. At the same time, I think Roman was also calling BS (with out blatantly telling the rep that he's full of it) on the Honda rep sitting next to him trying to make Ridgeline sound like a magical off-roading machine. And just to clarify, I think the Ridgeline makes a lot of sense for what it was designed for by Honda. Honda designed this a specific way because they imagined (through their own research and development), this is the type of truck that should sell to and satisfy their clientele. It's just this stupid rep that Roman was assigned to this time that was just BS'ing and misrepresenting what the Ridgeline was intended to be. I see plenty of merit in the Ridgeline, even though I'm more a traditional truck kinda guy when it comes to trucks.

These videos with other trucks vs the ridgeline dont really feel fair, i mean shouldnt you test the best of what each truck has to offer and not "Lets get the base tacoma and put it against the AWD ridgeline" i mean with hondas system you can almost argue it has lockers in it so when you put an open diffed truck against it off road it almost feels like your giving the honda a free pass like from what i remember the ridgeline will never have 4WD its only going to be 2WD or AWD so if its AWD is the best the ridgeline has to offer off road wise shouldnt you also bring in the bets the tacoma has to offer off road wise to put it against the ridgeline?

@@princessluna1233 Watch more reviews from different sources. They say otherwise. The Tacoma and Colorado are not even in the same class for comfort as the Ridgeline. What they offer is more serious towing and offroad capability, but for most small truck buyers, the Ridgeline can handle about 90% of what they will ever need, and do it in a nicer package. (FWIW, I have not owned a Honda since the mid-1980s. My current car is a Toyota Avalon. During my military career I've driven my share of Jeeps and Hummers and even HEMMTs, so I'm accustomed to offroading.)

I have no doubt the Ridgeline will perform like a dream on a snow day when you need to get to work, on the days you need stuff for the home, and when you take the family outdoors.

I would still get a Ridgeline because of comfort. My family currently has a 2007 Ridgeline and a family member has a 2011 Tacoma and the Ridgeline is so much better. Better for family's. The dual action tailgate and the in bed trunk are perfect for trips or vacations. And even just going to the grocery store as a family. Once you get a Ridgeline, you will never want to sell it.

Well to all of you who think the Ridgeline isn't good enough offroad, or "tough" enough, I've got a simple challenge for you. Take your offroad truck and take it offroad. Except instead of driving around at 10mph crawling over things, blast through at 50mph. See that dinky little hill climb? Try airing that out. Oh wait, you just destroyed your front end and bent your frame? Newsflash, trucks suck for offroading. Trucks are for hauling dirt bikes, quads, and side by sides which are good at offroading. You might think you're offroading, but what you're really doing is driving around at 10mph in a golf shirt AC on, tip toeing your expensive truck trying not to scratch the paint or rip apart the undercarriage. Is it really offroading when you're sitting behind a windshield and you dont get an ounce of dirt on you?

@johnguan5970
@johnguan5970 8 жыл бұрын
well no shit, he's a honda rep, what else is he going to do besides plug his product? Also the magic AWD system. The "special" logic is this: From when you're stopped and you accelerate the computer will send torque to the rear until you are moving at say 15mph, then switch to FWD to save gas. The harder you get on the gas the more torque is sent to the rear up to 50/50 lock. So it is basically shifting from 4 HI rear locker on to fwd from 0-20mph depending on how heavy your foot is. And yes, all trucks suck for offroading including the taco. I used to own a 4runner. It's simple engineering, you take a 5000lb truck offroad it is going to start breaking parts once you go fast. Honestly 4wheeling is kind of idiotic, crawling around obstacles trying not to wreck your vehicle or scrape your underbody.

Anyone who watched the edmunds video in death valley shows the Tacoma blew out all the factory shocks on washboard where as the ridgeline only had one slightly weeping and the ridgeline shocks were not even off road rated, whats up with that? Main weakness of this vehicle is appearance. It looks pretty lame though still better than older ridgeline generations.The ridgeline looks more lame point blank due to the honda pilot chop job and doesn't have 4 low functionality but it does have awd which is better for inclimate weather and day to day situations. I do think the bed is too short for most practicality and that's sort of a drawback on the ridgeline as well. Honestly with the right tires a small lift and some front bumper work it would do fine in most offroad situations that most people would get involved in. I mean I have done a lot of offroading and usually I stop on a trail because the rollover risk is more of a problem not that the vehicle couldn't get through it. Rarely do you need more unless you intend to abuse it. Thing is there are $2000 old Toyota trucks that are good for abusing & rolling over, so honestly who would do that kind of stuff with a newer vehicle regardless of how capable it is? As far as Toyota goes their shit is sorta dated and use old tech. I think Toyota has made better trucks in the past and some of their stuff has gone downhill in recent years. I think Honda is just stepping into this truck market or with what their perceived idea of what a truck should be. I bet within 5 years Honda will offer an offroad trail rated version of the ridgeline in a few years. Right now its up to yourselves to make that happen.

+Caleb Ramey Not to mention, he had no conclusion at the end of the video. And he misunderstood the body rigidity demonstration by saying, hey the wheel is off the ground by so many inches in the Ridgeline. If the wheel is off the ground, it does not matter by how many inches, it is still not on the ground even with the Tacoma. Also the Tacoma made a very uncomfortable metal squeaking noise when entering that obstacle, which, demonstrated possibly poor body rigidity. Anyhow, none of this means the Ridgeline is better at offloading than the Tacoma, but a reviewer should understand what each test demonstrates and not be biased.

I just cannot get over how feminine the Ridgeline looks. It just doesn't look like a modern, rugged truck. That kills it for me. I know when I get into the Tacoma, I'm going to get a tough truck that can take a beating and keep putting a smile on my face. The Ridgeline... it just looks like it would be easy to own day-to-day, but that's about it. I would be so much more confident in the Tacoma.

The concept of a unibody, full independent suspension pickup is great as a starting point. I really hoped this thing would turn out a little more truck like than its Honda Odyssey mother. If it had 1-2" more ground clearance and a more boxy front end, they would have hit the nail on the head. Hopefully Honda listens to the press and consumers and offers a genuine off road package in a few years.

Honda would be better served by saying the ridgeline is not trying to be a truck. Its for people that want the space of their crossovers with a pickup bed. But Honda is trying so hard here to pull the wool over peoples eyes on how much better truck it is than real trucks. Im sorry but things like honda magic, ah ja systems, only works for apple fan boys and soccer moms. Also where he said an open diff system would have gotten stuck.... umm no modern open diff 4x4 would have gotten stuck there. In fact ive been in many situations like that in a 2008 Nissan and the ABLS pretty much just has to apply a little brake to the slipping tire and the truck just goes right over which is why the tacoma didnt get stuck either. And if you are really worried both nissan and yota have locking rear diffs in their top of the line 4x4 versions. Which by the way cost what a base awd fridge costs with way way more off road capability.

Harvey Millar For someone to say that the ridgeline pushed the ranger out of market is down right ridiculous. Ford sold more rangers in one year than Honda sold ridgelines during 11 years!!! In fact everyone knows the ranger really had not been updated since 1997 yet even in its worst year the ranger outsold the ridgeline's best year ever. Ford's lack of innovation on the model and maybe the tacoma and frontier pushed the ranger out of the market. Dodge pretty much shot itself in the face with the dakota.

In Chile we have tougher roads conditions than in the US and it´s funny to read guys talking against the Rdigeline. Guys, let me tell you that the majority of the mining companies in Chile, located at 4000 meters or even 5000 meters high (snow, rain, mud,rocky roads) or even those located in the driest desert of the world (Atacama Desert, where Dakar´s competition used to take place) has chosen Ridgeline as part of their fleet. Of course they have Toyota, but the Hilux (cheaper and very reliable) Mitsubishi and Nissan but Ridgeline has provided an excellent performance even though it is more expensive....but much much more comfortable than any other. Tacoma is an amazing truck, no doubt.

I'm 6'7" and agree. However, what I hate about the Taco is that if feels like it could roll over, and the nose dives excessively during moderate braking. I rented a 4x4 Taco for 3-4 days during a house hunting trip, but stayed on paved roads. What I don't like about the Ridgeline is the direct injection engine; it needs more power and it needs port injection to keep the intake valves clean - and a timing chain not belt. However, if my AWD Sienna died tomorrow, I'd buy a Ridgeline to replace it. If Toyota built an AWD Ridgeline-like truck, with all the comfort plus Toyota engineering, I'd buy that.

The first thing i noticed when they did there "wheel lift test", the honda sure alot more ridgidity and no noise from the frame twisting up. And i give it to all the negative comments on the body, looks like a mini van. But as far as everything else goes, its alot better than the other mid size out there. I dont expect to do extreme 4x4 in any stock truck, and i dont expect to tow with a midsize truck. So with that, its much more effient and comfortable "truck" than what the others offer in the midsize, and probably more usable in everyday life. The tacoma gets the same damn fuel mileage as my f150 and i got way more power with a 5.0l. Horsepower or gas mileage, thats what look for and not something that has neither.

They each have their place. No doubt that daily commuting is better with the fwd/awd system. Snow driving will be better with the fwd/awd system. It's not what the other trucks are, by design. I'm considering one because it would fit my needs. I need to be able to haul dead deer from where I hunt-to the processors, tow a zero turn or 4 wheeler, and haul small building materials. And the ridgeline can easily handle those tasks with more refinement and more room than any of its direct competition.

+MrKeyboardCommando I generally like Roman's reviews but it seems he is FIXATED on those old memes used to differentiate a truck from a REAL truck. If he wants to maintain credibility, acknowledging most truck owners WILL NOT take a new purchased / leased truck off-road or use the truck to haul, tow, and operate the vehicle as they were originally intended. It will be the Home Depot run for mulch, the 60 inch LCD screen purchase, and the new washer and dryer (every 10 years). Trucks have been slowly turned into car-like vehicles because that's how auto manufacturers can turn a $25K truck into a $55K vehicle and make more profit and play to people egos / self-esteem. 'We" drink the marketing koolaid every time. There is no functional reason in 2016 why the Tacoma's seat comfort (from /rear) is so poor. The U.S should have been shifted to the Toyota Hilux years ago with the 4 cylinder high torque diesel. This is an old platform architecture with some updates and reskinning. No one gives the new Tacoma high marks for interior comfort. I'm glad Honda did not try to go head-to-head with the Tacoma and GM Twins. However, they found a good balance of truck-like functionally while providing features (in-bed truck, room, ride comfort, refinement) the others cannot offer.

They can take a little out of their playbook and have something like VW did with the 1st gen Touareg and have locking diffs and low range. I do say the test was bullshit. An open diff Tacoma vs a Torque vectoring awd system is shady on Honda's part. The equivalent Tacoma is better than the equivalent ridgeline period. I think TFL needs to do a unibody AWD/4WD mashup with unibody SUVs and the Honda Ridgeline.

We have the I LIVE IN THE FIELDS off roader who cant see outside of the picture guy. We have the DENIERS who say this is a Pilot with a BED completely ignoring the fact it has a complete different suspension guy. We have the TACOMA FANBOY who basically cant picture any other truck in the universe kinda guy. We also have the SUBARU guys who think they have the best AWD in the universe giving them the rights to even compare a Pickup just because it has AWD to their Sedan. Why cant we said there are trucks for anyone? Sure you can buy a Tacoma to go off roading and shit but man does that thing drives like a fucking old school truck? what about the guy who does light off road just to go camping or the guy who just want to go sightseeing not bend the A-ARM doing rock crawling?... These kind of one sided view is what kills the truck community they cant even fathom something different than the Have it All Off Road/Tow and SUCK at Driving Sporty or Not having anything at all. The Ridgeline is a LIGHT DUTY TRUCK not an Off Road vehicle intended to go Rubicon and shit... This thing will out maneuver any truck you have in the same segment period.. You have a Tacoma? this thing will obliterate it in a corner. And at the end of the day if you drive a Tacoma ultimate off roading package just to do off road 2 weeks in a year? why bother? This is what the Ridgeline wants to tackle.. The Light Duty off roader guy that don't want to lose driving dynamics.. In this case there isn't anything out there as the Ridgeline.

+skirmich I agree. People are too narrow minded and should just be happy that we have so many options to choose from. My only gripe is that this thing is not a truck. It doesn't bother me that it is front wheel drive, that it has front and back independent suspension or that it's unibody and looks like the aborted child of Henry Kissinger and Margaret Thatcher. What gets me is that it isn't body-on-frame, which is what makes a truck a truck. It's built on the same platform as their Odyssey minivan. The El Camino isn't a truck, the Ranchero isn't a truck, their Odyssey minivan definitely isn't one, and as impressive off road as a Subaru is, it isn't a truck either. A truck is anything body-on-frame which includes certain SUVs and older full size vans. The Ridgeline is unibody with an integrated frame. It's light duty, handles like their minivan, and can handle itself in light mud and sand, but that still doesn't make it a truck.

+Daniel Bell According to the Dictionary: "Truck"; "a strong horse-drawn or automotive vehicle (as a pickup) for hauling". What you are describing is a TYPE of Truck as in Body on Frame Pickup. But dictionary says "Truck" its an Automotive Vehicle used for Hauling or "a wheeled vehicle for moving heavy articles". This is the same ordeal as when the CUV started to come out.. People saying they weren´t real SUVs and blah blah blah.. The Ridgeline follows the same idea of a Crossover Utility Vehicle but now with a Pickup. Following the same example as the CUV the new Crossover Pickup its Faster, More agile, Better handling and a good compromise between Utility and Handling. The new Ridgeline is basically making history right here. But as far as being a "Truck" there is no argument, It is a truck.. Being more specific it is a new type of Pickup = Crossover Pickup (Waiting till the real name comes up).

+skirmich Wow, you are such a little kid. You actually had to look up the definition? Don't lecture me on what you think a truck is. I've owned them, drove them, worked on them for 30 years, I know what a truck is.

I really like the Ridgeline with one caveat. I'd be pushing the tow limits sometimes. I'd like a video really pushing the tow limits on this truck. Like towing a large enclosed trailer weighing in at 4,800 or whatever the gcvw allows.
@larryspiller15
@larryspiller15 8 жыл бұрын
honda likely paid safe with the towing limit and the payload is fairly good so squat shouldn't be awful. that being said, actual proof by demonstration would be nice to see.

Guess what? TFL Trucks did just that. They hooked up a 4,800-pound trailer with a driver and a passenger and took it on the Interstate... up into the Colorado Rockies to the Eisenhower Tunnel (elevation 11,000+ feet). Check it out. They were genuinely surprised by how well the Ridgeline performed.

I get the fact that Roman isn't happy reviewing it under their terms. There's a little insolence that maybe Honda is deserving of for rigging the parameters of the test and its subjects. Way to bite your lip and say "yeah", Roman. ⭐️

Donald Weber That may work for vehicles that never leave a paved road. But once you have to tow a real load like a ski boat or something that weight more than a few hundred pounds over long distance or once you have to deal with real off road conditions, these things are simply not capable for those situations.
@donaldweber7636
@donaldweber7636 8 жыл бұрын
Dale Couture Yes they are. A Ridgeline is perfectly capable of towing 5000 lbs long distances, dragging a boat out of the water, going what most people consider offroad. It does what it is supposed to do. And to me, offroading is something a stock Tacoma can't do.

The fact is most truck owners never go off-road, or if they do, it's something mild like this. This would probably work for 70% of truck owners needs. But I get it, truck guys want a truck, not a crossover truck that might get 2 mpg better.

Credits needto go where credits are due. I think, for what it is, Honda did a good job. Torque vectoring is a relatively simple system, but it works. I still wouldn't call it a truck, but i would call it a pick up.It's got a bed, it's got AWD and seems to do just fine relly. I personally would still take the Tcoma instead, but hey, each to their own.

The vast majority of people who do go off road use more than 8in of ground clearance... Just because most trucks don't go off road is meaningless to the people who do go off road, and want something that wont break in half when they go through a puddle.

The way I see it: -You are a truck guy and want a new one? Buy another truck. -Don't have a truck but are in the market to buy one? get a truck! -Don't have a truck but are in the market to buy one that isn't too rough on your delicate behind and dont care much for offroad? get the Ridgeline. -You are a truck guy but your wife got you by the balls? Ridgeline. -Just one car that can somewhat do it all? Ridgeline -You don't count pennies and have a two-car garage? Truck + SUV/muscle car/rice burner. So it seems like it all falls down to what you need and want/can afford and not to what some random youtube troll says. WHO KNEW!!??

flightrulez In my opinion, I kinda like the Ridgeline because of Honda's AWD modes, and that it can kinda drive like a crossover and a truck at the same time. Yes, I know it's not COMPLETELY like a truck, but it does offer characteristics from both worlds that could help increase sales.
