Some of the best how to for people who wanna learn out there. Excellent. For me, most of the time what I do to avoid putting rocker boxes up front so I don’t have to deal with welding backside and more floor space for driver is get the forward laterals in position and small tacks to hold. Get the windshield bar in position with good solid tacks. Remove small tacks at the hoop where the laterals joined. Lean the hoop back a bit drop the front of the cage down and weld up the bars. Raise it back up to join the hoop and tack in place. Then you can remove the blocks to drop the hoop and weld at the hoop. Just another way to do things.

I'm watching this two years later, it's very interesting, may I say here in Australia the bar across the windscreen should be straight because if you have a side on contact being straight it's less likely to bend in, it would be the same for the cross roof bar, apart from those to things I find your video very informative. Thanks mate.

New Zealand too.. . Its an a crazy weak spot in otherwise brilliant cage design... Although, so saying, relative strength would still be high if joined to originating cars metal work in centre of screen... Think dimple dye 3mm plate... 🤔🍄

@510Redneck8 жыл бұрын
Jamie Thomas You can buy pre-bent pieces (it will just cost ya more because someone else has elbow grease into them) OR perhaps you can build your own bender with the equipment you already own. Or put your equipment to use in other areas to make the funds to buy a bender, manual ones are getting pretty cheap these days so it probably wouldn't take to long of saving up to acquire one.

@TheFabricatorSeries8 жыл бұрын
+DanOfTheNorth You still have to know how to measure and find the correct angle in order to load it into the software. I usually relate it to using a calculator - you had to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide before you started using it. Otherwise, you'd be SOL without it. Software makes many things easy, but you still need to know how it is done.
@bellofello18 жыл бұрын
The Fabricator I'm not so sure about that. I had zero experience with tubes or bending or notching before I started. Every tube I've bent, or notched using the software has come out exact to the mm and fit flawlessly. Without the software, yes I'd be forced to re-learn my ways.

Measurements, yes. Angles, no. Program does that for you. Bend offset/plane is also calculated for you.

+The Fabricator You might try the "Pro Lavalier Lapel Microphone JK MIC-J 044" available for $29 from Amazon. That particular one is as good or better than much more expensive mics. It will pug into something like a Zoom H1 or equivalent digital recorder that you can wear. Then add in your high-quality audio in post, using the camera audio track peaks for alignment, then delete the camera audio.
@TheFabricatorSeries9 жыл бұрын
I'll look into that, but I worry about wearing a mic. It will be exposed to all the dust and metal more so than one that hangs from the ceiling above (at least I assume it would). But it's cheap enough I guess.
@loganmclendon20869 жыл бұрын
+The Fabricator check B &H you can get a really good wired mic for like $30 and a good wireless for like $200 (lavalier style that clips to your shirt). If you want a mic that mounts on the camera (shotgun/ directional style) you can get a cheap one for $30 or really good one for $200. Rode and Audio Technica are really good brands to look at.

+The Fabricator This is an outstanding video with great explanation. I have one question though, Don't you need to cover the wires to keep the MIG sparks from damaging the insulation on the wires? I have seen it burn through very quickly which could lead to some nasty electrical gremlins.

I didn't look through all the comments but why do you tig weld all the tubing, then mig weld the rocker boxes? Also, I like your videos. I'm an offroad guy but I still learn from you. I like the tube bending and notching videos the most. Thanks.
@TheFabricatorSeries8 жыл бұрын
+Tony Briley Most of it is accessibility. The other part is the metal itself on the chassis. Some chassis use galvanized metal which literally explodes when you weld it (Mazda and Toyota are pretty famous for it). If you try to weld with the TIG, the metal blows straight to the tungsten. If you puddle with a MIG and allow it to flow into the sheet metal, it is less likely to blow up in your face. There are also some places where the TIG torch wont reach or fit into well. Other times it's just the time it takes to TIG vs MIG when the result is nearly the same.

Why don’t you use 1-5/8” for the main cage so it can also be used in NHRA 8.50 certified racing? Perhaps the owner would like to drag race the car at some point, it’s better to build it once that will pass tech in a variety of racing. From NHRA website “The tubing size requirement on 8.50 cages are 1 5/8-inch x . 118-inch mild steel or . 083-inch chromoly. “ Keep up the good work and informative videos!
