Really appreciate you taking the time to do a flip through review and cover all the basic content of the rule book! I personally like to be able to get a taste of the underlying mechanics and systems before I make a purchase

I got a White Box book as a gift a few years ago, and actually read it for the first time yesterday - cover to cover. PHB, DMG, and MM all together under 140 pages. Oh, the nostalgia! I last played d20 Basic and am now trying to form a hybrid of the two to allow for more character customization, skills and feats, but have almost all the same other rules for running the game.

Original D&D is still my preferred way to play...at least if I am refereeing. S&W is a slight alteration in terms of rules, but it is infinitely more readable and easy to figure out than the original (which can also be found in .pdf - but they aren't free). Pretty sure Mr. Otus is still with us. His unique style of fantasy art has become a favorite of mine.

Off the top of my head, I wasn't sure if Mr. Otus was still with us but I'm pretty sure you are correct and he is. :) ~Jeff

@@Thegaminggang Otus is still around he's done covers recently for the latest Barrowmaze Complete megadungeon, The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia, and HighFell: The Drifting Dungeon. Maybe you're thinking about the classic D&D artist Jim Roslof. He did work for Dungeon Crawl Classics too and sadly passed away in 2011. Great review and flip through on this game. You now have a new subscriber.

I like to point out to people that Swords & Wizardry is 0e, not 1e, especially since there's a common misconception in the OSR about what OD&D actually encompasses. Many people don't realize that if you played OD&D with all the supplements (there were around four or five in addition to the core three booklets), it had many more options. Druids, Rangers, Monks, Paladins, Thieves, Half-Elves, many more spells and monsters, many more magic items. It never approaches AD&D levels of complexity but it becomes much more robust and complete than people assume when they hear "OD&D". Personally I do run games using exclusively the 1974 material, based on a personal preference built upon research and curiosity that began when I learned that Gary Gygax ran the game this way himself, despite adding all the complexity to the rules later. I really like Swords & Wizardry, though. I enjoy what Matt Finch did here. It's a very well edited and organized version of the original game, or the more fleshed out version of it, and it's done a fine job of introducing new players to 1970s style D&D.

FYI Froggodgames.com is having a store wide 50% off sale until the end of April. Their warehouse is shipping products without issue as the warehouse is in a somewhat remote area with some of the Frogs sheltering in place basically next to it. Also try out their discord - great folks. They also sell 5E and PF (pdf only now) products. Finally, many of Th woe adventures for 5E are ported to Fantasy Grounds VTT as well.

IMHO This is THE best Fantasy rpg. I even like it better than the actual OD&D stuff as it's a lot better organized ascending AC and the saves!

You've given S&W a 10 over WB:FMAG's 9. What are the salient advantages of S&W over WB?
