Ryuma was a character that Oda made back when he wanted to do a swordsman manga with a chivalrous knight named Romeo and a samurai named Ryuma. He later on used Ryuma for a one-shot manga that was adapted into the Monsters special on netflix. You should definitely watch that special because there wasn't much spoiler in it anyway and it gives you a sense of who Ryuma is
