The fingers thing toward the beginning is beyond stupid and defeats the entire premise of the film. The guy holds up 4 fingers and tells Patch to look at him, not his fingers. He says he sees 8 fingers and the guy tells him that's a better answer because it doesn't conform to the objective consensus... The problem is that there are only 4 fingers and obviously, he sees the same 4 fingers from 2 different angles, thus creating the illusion that there are more. The implied message is that by focusing on the person rather than the problem, you cloud the issue and get the wrong answer, which is the OPPOSITE of the point the movie is trying to make.

cyanmanta The thing with this I think isn't that the guy HAS 8 fingers, but that Patch concentrates on the person the fingers are attached to rather than the fingers themselves. Its not the best segue and obviously doesn't get the point across very clearly, but this is actually really important as at the time patient-centered care wasn't really done. The medical staff would treat the illness without really worrying about the patient. Nowadays, patent-centered care is seen as very important and is taught from the very beginning, but back when the movie is set it just wasn't done, which is one of the reasons Patch made such a splash; he treated the whole person, not just the illness they had. The writers could have explained this better, since I never really understood it until I started my nursing classes, but once you understand where they're coming from it actually hold a lot of water.

In my very humble opinion, I think this movie earns more defense than After Earth would because Robin Williams still seems to TRY in this movie. The flaws are extremely apparent, and it doesn't excuse the fact that he depicted a hard working doctor as just a clown, but truthfully a lot of those flaws lies more in the writing and direction than it is with Robin Williams himself. I feel like I still see him trying his damndest to put in passion into this role, even if he was playing it the same way as every other role. It really, really feels like Robin Williams was trying hard with this movie... But looking at After Earth, that movie was completely built around sucking Smith-Dick. The performance given by Will Smith in that movie is just god awful, and has NOTHING to do with his real talents. He was Shamalyzed for After Earth, and there are dozens of other movies where he does phenomenally better work than he does in After Earth. In Patch Adams, we can at least see that Robin Williams was trying, and he was still giving off a feel of charisma to the point where he felt like a real character, even prompting NC to yell at the CHARACTER in some points and not the actor. In After Earth, there's just absolutely nothing redeemable about it. If Will Smith died anytime soon (which I pray he doesn't, don't want ANY early death on anyone), After Earth wouldn't be remembered with pride, it'd be shamefully hidden away because that movie blatantly did nothing but stroke the Smith ego, and we ALL know that has nothing to do with Will Smith. Granted I think the 'hate' on any review just because the main actor had sadly passed away never makes any logical sense. A lot of the flaming are just trolls trying to start things, or people trying to vent out emotions for what might've been one of their favorite actors. Whoa I did not mean to rant...

I agree; quality is slowly but surely creeping back into the movies. I was jaded with Hollywood for a long time, thinking they'd turned into nothing but lazy, formulaic sellouts. Then again, my taste in entertainment is different from most people's today: I love silent films/films from the 1930s-1940s and I read authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Victor Hugo in my spare time and love fairytales and legends like the stories of King Arthur. However, with movies like "Midnight in Paris", "Saving Mr. Banks", and "Frozen", I'm starting to have faith that Hollywood is getting back to its roots as storytellers. I'd love to take classes in screenwriting (I've only done playwriting and acting for the stage thus far) because once I learn how, I have dozens of film ideas in my head that would get the movies back to the more "old school" stuff they used to be. .

Honestly, i think if Artists could balance both their creative complexitiy with a modern day 21st century understanding of economics there could be middle ground in which you could appease the money hungry executives with quality. It's a business after all and i think they're starting to understand (the execs), that they need to innovate because we have a thriving independent market and alternative sources, also choice through the internet. It starts with perception; if that's shifted the market has to adjust or die, Ie: the music industry. If you're a fan of 'The hollywood reporter' they have 'roundtables' and this passing yr they had the executives from all the major studios talking openly about the reality and their fears. I wish you luck, theater is demanding but truly rewarding. Haha not that i'd personally know the strains of theater though it's one of the few Artistic cornerstones with its integrity intact. About your likes, i'm a fan of the golden age my self though i need to familiarize my self with the great novellas i've neglected (some you named).

William's character pontificates about how Beanie should be treated with a little more dignity and respect then spends the next minute or two making Beanie the butt of several jokes. This makes Williams look like a massive asshole and it completely undermines whatever he had to say about dignity and respect. Did no one in this production see how incredibly tasteless it was to use a catatonic patient as a comedy prop?

And the kicker? _Robin Williams knew this_ because he worked on a movie involving catatonia before this movie. You'd think he'd express more reluctance to go through with that joke.

For those who may not know, the real ideas of Hunter Adams are indeed based around humour, but there's much more to it than just clowning around with patients to make them laugh. It's more about emphasising the emotional wellbeing and the comfort of patients just as much as their physical wellbeing. It's not necessarily that the film misrepresented his ideas, as much as it horribly oversimplified them to "Laughter is the best medicine, hoho!". And he did actually create the free community hospital in real (which apparently ran for 12 years, not too shabby), but not until AFTER he had graduated.

11:15 -I think that sums up the major problem of the movie. They make it seem like a doctor can either be an uptight, insensitive douchebag with no bedside manner whatsoever, or a buffoon who makes his/her patients laugh, but doesn't practice medicine at all on them (you'll notice the option of being a doctor who relates to his/her patients with a reasonable amount of bedside manner while still actually treating their illnesses isn't even brought up as a possibility).

I don't hate the film., and enjpyed it for a umber pof years, but, yeah, it IS terribly flawed, including the "truth"..like Monica Potter/Carin Fisher dying, when it was a male friend, and she did not even EXIST! Couple of posters below me say that you need to 'suspend your disbelief' to enjoy this movie, but there's such a thing as going too far. For the record.. Doug is kinda wrong. Students are often taught to regard patients in a detached manner, to approach them through protocols and as scientists. And that's the right way. Also, I would not find it surprising at all to see a doctor, on a tour with students, completely ignoring the patient's sensibilities and mentioning amputation as a possible treatment for their condition. I would imagine even more so in the '70s. Patients are a kind of "sub-class" in hospitals, you lead your students around and tell them what you've got to tell them, probably for the fourth time at that point. You don't really care if the patient overhears you...

Disowned Adaptation: The real Patch Adams himself was dissatisfied with the film, saying that it is more commercial and focuses more on him being funny than his actual methods; His philosophy is about using friendliness and humor to help in the healing process, using alternative medical treatments as well; the movie presented him as guy who likes making people feel better but actually getting better is a secondary issue. He was also annoyed that Robin Williams did not bother to donate any of his salary to his institute, although he did not dislike Williams as a whole and applauded his support for St. Jude Children's Hospital. In fact, the two were otherwise pretty good friends, so much so Adams would later write for Time Magazine a heartwarming farewell to Williams after he committed suicide.

I actually think one of the major problems with this film is how they portray the "villain". Its something that the Critic only used as a bit of a punchline for the "Most Unorthodox" joke but here he's portrayed as a drill sergeant type who is not only bent on the ideology that Doctors are better than humanity but he's also completely closed off to any new ways of thinking or methods to heal patients. Okay, I don't know how a Dean of a Medical School would act but if you want a fair portrayal (and clearly this movie did not but just saying "IF you wanted a fair portrayal") why not develop him more as a character to show WHY he believes this one way of doing things is the right way, then you have a clash of two ways of thinking and (if you portrayed Adams right, which, again, clearly this movie didn't) none of them are strictly good or bad.

Well... May I argue? Some doctors even today don't know the difference between no emotional attachment and being a douche... I mean My psychiatrist literally made my panic attacks worse, while my schools psychology teacher, when I was having an emotional break down and panic attack calmed me down with a stinken hug... The pychiatrist just showed pills at me and kept asking clearly triggering questions that sent me to tears and a near breakdown state and threatned to lock me up if I don't cut that out.... while the other just sat there listening to me ramble about what made me cry and calm me down like any mom would calm her kid and presto, I just needed a heart pill coz my blood presure went nuts and I could get back to studying...

So true the only reason why all those extras are there is because they are actors from a failed skit show Doug tried to make after quitting the nostalgia critic so he decided to bring the critic back and add the skit show to the critic show i personally skip the skit parks because they are painfully unfunny

stethespaniard2 I never really understood the sudden hate for his skits, sure they're more elaborate post to boldly flee than there were before (taking advantage of having more actors and studio space) but they were always there. In this review for example we have the clown throwing the red nose.

Well I think the new ones hold up. Personally, I think both the old AND the new are good in their own special way. The old ones were more about the comedy and making fun of films while still making valid points about their structure. Whereas for he new ones, it's the other way around.

+stethespaniard2 This. Seriously. The sketches he does now are like Family Guy cutaways. They're not funny, they're not necessary, they're hardly relevant, some of them drag on for WAY too long, and they interrupt the flow of the video, thus completely taking us out of the mood.

You can tell here that Doug actually put some amount of effort into making the Dr. Bitch-Spasms sketch funny, whereas nowadays, he just throws together sketches just to have sketches and the results are utter garbage 99% of the time. 2. The sketches here last for maybe 20-30 seconds max. The sketches in the new review are not only unfunny, as I said before, but many of them just drag on and on and on. In The Fourth commercial review where they spent half the video literally doing nothing but milking that stupid sexual harassment joke was just painful. I literally felt like I was watching SNL meets Family Guy cutaways. 3. The sketch in this review was done by Doug himself. (Those actors he has doing the sketches nowadays are just horribly unfunny.) It's time for Doug to throw out all these horrible half-baked sketches and just get back to good old Nostalgia Critic.

I actually have noticed a shocking amount of this. "Strong women" are always either portrayed as "bossy" or like a man with breasts. It's chuffing annoying! That's why the Sarah Palmer character from Halo 4 gets on my nerves. The creators claimed she would be a strong female role, but she's just an action male stereotype under the guise of a woman.
