@encycl07pedia-10 ай бұрын
@@jspringer86 You must be one of the dregs I was talking about. Essentially renting an arcade cabinet is far different than paying money to gamble, buy skins, or get a competitive advantage in a game you already bought and own. I'm not here knocking Blockbuster for renting out video games 30 years ago, either. But you wouldn't understand that, would you? At least their business model was meant to siphon literal nickels and dimes in definite transactions for an hour or two instead of creating addicts while siphoning tons of money over long periods of time. It's also much different playing an arcade cabinet with gearshifts, leaning bikes, and custom controls than tapping a phone screen. I don't think paying for virtual currency to buy in-game costumes is quite the same as spending a few quarters to play one of your favorite games for 3-5 minutes.

Doing big jumps and launching boats into the air is always a ton of fun. Maybe its because I haven't played it much but, I always thought this game was super hard on the arcade machine. something is definitely lost on the console ports, or at least it seemed like it the couple of races i've played on console. i remember thinking i was such a 'rebel' playing this game, since it was the first game (especially an E-Rated one) to include the word Damn, as in the boat named "DAMN the Torpedoes!!" (the announcer's voice has been burned into my memory)...but i also wanted to say that the HydroJump method makes a lot more sense on the arcade controls, since the brake was triggered by pulling the throttle stick all the way back, which makes the stern of your boat dip into the water, which means boosting (straight "forward") will launch you upward...

The Neo Geo was basically a cartridge-based arcade machine. As a general rule, I didn't like the home console ports of arcade games. Most of the arcade games were made to be extremely difficult in order to burn through quarters. That same greed meant they put minimal effort into making the game work for the home consoles so they were still brutally hard. There were some exceptions I enjoyed like Rush 2049 and NFL Blitz that weren't made ridiculously difficult to bankrupt the players. The timer in the NFL Blitz 2000 video is a rollover from the arcade cabinet in order to increase profit efficiency that they were too cheap/careless to edit out. I distinctly remember an NFL Blitz (maybe Blitz 2000) cabinet taking $2 per 2-to-3-minute quarter, so to play a single short game would cost eight freaking dollars. I remember feeling guilty afterwards that I asked my dad for that much money to play one game. I initially thought it would be $2 for four quarters.

As arcade-goer in the 90s, I was shocked at how well they managed to make this game look and play on the N64. The Dreamcast version may have looked almost indistinguishable from the arcade, but the 64 version was so much more responsive and had more charm. I could never consistently do boost jumps with the Dreamcast version. In the N64 version, I could perfectly time any jump to the exact height I needed. It's a pivotal skill. As much as I love the game, I have a huge gripe with it: The cheesy, arcade rubber-band scaling of the AI. It's abysmal; the harder class of boat you pick, the harder it scales until it becomes impossible to reach 1st place. In the Easy class of boats, Damn the Torpedoes is the most consistent boat for winning- plain and boring, but responsive and reliable. Midway is alright too, if you prefer its more "boaty" controls and your goal is to win. Miss Behave for some reason has tougher AI scaling and you won't win easily, even if you're adept with controlling it. The Medium class of boats are still winnable choices. Thresher is their version of Damn the Torpedoes; very solid with gentler AI scaling. Banshee is a blast to control and has scaling about on par with Miss Behave. Tidal Blade is not a consistent performer and has some tough AI scaling. If your boat of choice is in Hard, then tough shit; your races are now glorified time trials that you WILL LOSE to the other racers. A real shame, because those three are awesome and super fun to play as. The Bonus boats are weird. I've been able to hit first with Tinytanic and Chumdinger, but Armed Response and Blowfish seem to take on the Hard boats' scaling.
