One of my most cherished games of my nigh 35 years of gaming. Was genuinely obsessed with this game when it came out. My brother and I did not own a memory card at the time and would rent this game *constantly* from a local video game shop. We loved it so much we would play as far as we could, and attempt to leave the 64 on as long as possible to beat it. Naturally it would always freeze and we would have to restart all the time, but we learned more about the game each time and loved it so much it never mattered. That same love carried on to Goemon's Great Adventure. Both of them were a testament to the gambles that companies were willing to make back in the day, what with the authentically Japanese whackiness and charm that would have been polarizing for many kids who knew nothing about Japanese culture and humor. Those who played these games and loved them, they are always in your heart even to this day ❤

Here’s an interesting tidbit, this game only sold 55,000 in America and around 141,000 in Japan (it had a PAL release but I’m not sure what it sold in that region) making this game one of the rarest titles on N64 but what’s amazing is it’s remembered so fondly. My brother traded an extra copy of Turok on the bus to get this game and it’s been in my possession ever since. Great game and one I play through at least once a year!!

I'll join the other commenters who have massive nostalgic feels for this one. I always think music plays a big part in nostalgia, and this game must have one of the best soundtracks on the N64. The title theme, Impact, and a special mention to the Gourmet Submarine theme, a certified banger. It was the game that really introduced me to that eccentric Japanese style, and although some gameplay aspects were familiar, the presentation was so distinct compared to the usual N64 classics. Also there was some doubt as to whether it would get ported over from Japan, so finding snippets in magazines and then finally getting your hands on a copy felt like you were playing something rare and exotic. Watching this series, you can really tell the difference between the games just churned out, and the ones that had some care put into them. This game is so charming, funny, grand and epic, graphically excellent for the time too. The one surprise watching back is how quick thab finished it, without a guide even. I seemed to remember it taling ages back in the day. It does seem a little shallow. Wonder what they could do these days, with the same world building but a bit more content.

It's a pity you didn't speak to the Witch as Sasuke. Because you would have got some humorous extra dialogue that revealed that he was the one who accidentally blew up the Wise Man's house earlier. In addition to that, you also unlocked an Impact boss rush mode after finding every Fortune cat in the game. I'll admit the game is a bit archaic and WAY too easy. But I have fond memories of my time playing it as a kid. Plus I still love listening to the music to this day. Don't expect an easy time with Goemon 2 though. That game is ball bustingly difficult compared to this.

I love that this game never fails to capture the affection of those who play it for the first time. I very rarely play games that hook me anymore, and of those titles it's usually the ones with a particular gimmick or solid atmosphere which lure me in. The Ganbare Goemon series is so quintessentially Japanese there's no reason why it should appeal to foreign audiences -- but it's music is banging, it's motifs are exotic, the humor is really silly and accessible. I think I cried as a 6 year old having to return my rental to Blockbuster. I will say I may have been a bit spoiled STARTING the series with this title as it IS also the slowest-paced and showcases the difficulties Devs had adapting motion to 3D environments; the SNES games are perhaps a bit faster-paced and more cohesive in graphics. But I don't know. Maybe it was the man singing over Impact's introduction, or the way each antagonist is simply "name that rhymes with Karen", or I just really loved the green knifey ninja. I definitely get rose-colored glasses watching this title.

I feel with the rating the time it was realized in relation to the other N64 games should be considered. Cause mystical ninja goemon predates ocarina of time by atleast a year... yet it has so many of the stables that ocarina gets credited for "staples" of gaming. i think that is a huge part why goemon is so fondly remebered. also if your not a fan of the absurd humor then goemon as a franchise wont stand out to you
@CrawYT Жыл бұрын
ratings are just based off of his enjoyability of the game. thab's played oot at least a few times but if iirc a ton of times so id bet that "ruined" MNSG's chances of having a higher rating. Game was awesome but probably pretty just okay if you've already played oot a ton and never MNSG

SNES Goemon was very linear in level design, but this title tried to debut for the N64 by being nonlinear in full explorative 3D, which was the trend for new 3D games at this time. It can be quite confusing where to go to for this reason. Thank goodness they returned to the linear level layouts in the N64 sequel to this.

If it wasn’t for this game, I wouldn’t have known what a memory card was until I bought a PSX. I remember several times getting to the submarine underwater. Only to get stuck in an invisible box or whatever at the entrance. Only to start from the beginning. I remember my friend almost breaking my controller cause of how often we had to restart the game. I learnt how to be patient just by playing this game constantly.
