Beating EVERY N64 Game - Rayman 2: The Great Escape (116/394)

Ubisoft released the atrocious game called Tonic Trouble, and everyone wondered what was up? This was actually a test environment for their real new game, Rayman 2. Did they iron out all the kinks from that mess, or is this also a janky unfulfilling platformer?

Rayman 2 was one of those games that was ported to everything. It was the Resident Evil 4 of its day. Lots of fun memories with it.

Oh, man! It's a shame you didn't get the 1000th Lum back. There's a hidden pathway on the...I THINK its the level with all the skeleton hands and blood river. It's supposed to be the land of the dead, and there's a secret part you can reach that isn't obvious at all located in a big, open room with a bunch of platforms you cross in the blood water. The 1000th Lum is hidden behind a large wall. It's a fun little treat. Again, you don't get anything for it. It's just neat

I had this on PC when I was a kid. I remember that I didn't have a proper 3D card, so the smoke was just black boxes XD I loved this game so much

I remember the Rayman games being like the Super Mario of PC. I mean, I guess they were ported to pretty much every single system imaginable too, but back then it was pretty rare for games to come out both on PC and consoles, and for some reason platformers were NEVER ported to PC, so Rayman was the best thing we got around! (well, I'll always have a specific fondness for Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen.)

That made me chuckle. I had received it as a Christmas gift but our PC didn't have a 3D card either so to play the game my parents had to get one. My father was less then stoked. lol Good old Nvidia TNT2.

I always understood the "walking shell" to be like a missile casing/shell (like a shotgun shell), or like a giant cartoon bullet, which is why it basically acts like a little rocket.

Man, I remember being off sick from school and feeling sorry for myself on the sofa. I had recently been given this game by my best friend (he used to get lots of pirate copies of games and give me all the duplicates or things he didn't care about) so I put it on and got madly hooked. It was one of the best bugs I ever had. I couldn't afford new games except for one of maybe my bday or Xmas to my pal came through for me on that and means I got to experience a lot of gaming and movie magic Sadly lost that friend. I both love and hate this game. I love it because it's an amazing game with a dark atmosphere and a feeling like there was a lot more to the world that I wasn't seeing, but the game made me *want* to see it. I hate it because it was my first Rayman game, and none of the other games before or since are like it. I was super excited for Rayman 3. But it was basically Rayman 2 by way of an arcade game, with almost no story and everything played off as a joke. I was super excited for Rayman 4. We didn't get Rayman 4. We got the Rabbids. Then we got Origins and Legends, which are really good 2d platformers, but not what I wanted or expected. Everything is presented as one big Looney Tunes joke.

Agree, first Rayman game I played, loved it for the world like you said.... But all other Rayman games I have played have been a let down. I honestly suggest the Rayman 3 game on Game boy advance. Closest next game to Rayman 2 but ovbiously not 3d but way better than the GameCube Rayman.

As a kid i had rayman 2 for the n64. I somewhat remeber you needed a separate memory pack to save - which i didnt have. I have propably spend quite some hours replaying the first levels. Seeing you 100% complete it in 10 hours is quite a mindf*ck

I fondly remember this game because I played it during the time I got varicella. I was 22 years old and I worked as a salesman at a department store. I got the illness right at the start of Xmas campaign and I didn't want to lose it, so I covered my face in makeup and went to work. Too bad the makeup started to fall, my supervisor found out and sent me back home! I got a very low wage that month due to my low sales commissions, but the good part was that I enjoyed playing this phenomenal game without job stress hahaha. Graphics look uncanny for the N64, easily among the very best.

This is my favorite 3D Donkey Kong Country game. 😉 Seriously though, I didn't play it until my mid-20's, so no nostalgia here, but it might be the most fun I've ever had playing a 3D platformer. It's just absolutely exhilarating at times. It made me realize what Donkey Kong 64 could have been. Don't get me wrong, DK64 is a fun adventure, but it doesn't really capture the pure platforming magic and flow of the Donkey Kong Country games. But Rayman 2 does. Anyone who is a fan of the genre but hasn't played it is missing a real treat. It can't be conveyed just how fun the game is in a video or anything....you have to play it. The music isn't bad, but personally I was a but underwhelmed. But I turned the music off in the settings and played the game to the Chemical Brothers, and it was amazing. Highly recommend some good high energy music as a backdrop, like he said the OST is a bit too chill in places.

Rayman 1 was one of the first games I ever played and yet after over 2 decades I beat it for the first time earlier this year. Rayman 3 was one of my most played games so much so that I had a second copy because the disc from first one was too damaged. Somehow I managed to completely miss Rayman 2 from my childhood. I tried it few years ago and it's good but I like the 3rd more.

Loved this game back in the day. Played it to completion on the PS1, N64, Dreamcast, and on PS2. Then played it again to completion on the Duckstation PS1 emulator and on the M64 plu FZ N64 emulator as well. I still think it is one of the greatest platform games ever made. The sequel was also good, but the developers tried to make it “edgier” and “cooler” and changed the soundtrack and other details, which robbed the game of the magical and whimsical atmosphere and gravitas presented on Rayman 2.

I really hope you'll play Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dog. It's a mess, but a very impressive mess. It's a third person RTS game and a space shooter on a console, there was and still isn't anything like that on console, as far as I know. It's hard to play, it's genuinely hard to get anything done without some practice to be honest, but those of us who did, it's fond memories. I wasn't too good at videogame back then ahah so I'm sure you'll be faster than me 😂

i did grind out a 100% on Dreamcast back in the day. a port many years later was a launch title for the 3DS. that one had crazy deep 3D. most games i can play with the 3D slider at max, but Rayman i could only handle medium.

The first Rayman game is indeed tough as nails. But nothing a true GAMER like you cannot beat! (Heck, even I beat it!) Some cages are really hard to find, but there's a great walkthrough online with detailed maps! I also recommend the PC version since it fixes some bugs that are present in the PS version.
