Former President Thabo Mbeki was the keynote speaker at a session to celebrate 120 years of the battle of ADWA. This session was part of the Africa Unity for Renaissance Conference & Africa Day Expo on 25 May 2016.
The session took place at Ditsong Museum of South Africa in Tshwane.
He will addressed the session on “The 120 Years of the Adwa African Victory.” Led by Empress Taitu, the wife of Emperor Menelik II, and the Emperor’s generals, the patriotic Ethiopian army defeated the Italian colonial forces at Adwa, Ethiopia on 1 March 1896 and thus secured Ethiopia’s independence from colonial rule.
The victory at Adwa would later serve as an inspiration in the struggle against colonial rule to subsequent generations of Ethiopians and other Africans throughout the Continent.

How narrow minded you become, first you should learn who you are and what race your nation identified in the eye of the rest of the world…Adwa history written by Ethiopian blood but the symbol of that winning of the Adwa was beyond Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a part of Africa… The victory shows the decline of white colonialism in Africa particular in black African nations. Because of Adwa Ethiopia was not the only one saved, it goes out to the rest of Africa and raised the status of black African to an equal partner in the world. it thought the rest of black race that black race can win a white, As far as my concern unless you think you are something else other than black all black race should take pride for the accomplishment of my forefather heroism. The European thinks us a black not white or blue or any other race…

I know the history of Battle of Adwa where Italy was defeated by Ethiopians in 1896 since my childhood. However, I heard from president Mbeki very important points that I never heard or learnt from history books. He had made a very good research on the history of Ethiopian leaders and the people for his speech. Indeed the Battle of Adwa is a fascinating history for all Africans. I am proud as Ethiopian in particular and as African in general.

This is a comment sent to me by Enawgaw Mehari: President Mbeki said Adwa makes Africans victors ! He highlighted the importance of to know our own history and be proud of our culture and roots. He refuted in his speech the mentality that Africa is only a victim of slavery , colonialism etc and cited Adwa as African victory that Europeans were conquered . Unity is the key for success and it was with unity of all Ethiopians that defeated the Italians . Africa Unite !

Brilliant! Thank you Mr. President for telling it beautifully, indeed the battle of Adawa and its victory is an African victory! However, we didn’t capitalize on it instead we went back to tribalism and play victims. We miss leaders like you… just now we are blessed with a visionary leader in Ethiopia but the westerners are working hard to take him down mainly by their divide and rule strategy. Unlike our ancestors, we have many bandit that can easily bought by the westerners.

The research that the former president of South Africa Dr. Thabo Mbeki, a true African, who continues to inspire Africans across the world-did is simply remarkable. He did an excellent research on how the world press covered the 1896 Adwa decisive African victory. The way the world press covered the Adwa victory truly demonstrates Adwa was the most decisive battle for Africa. We Africans are blessed for having with us the great Thabo Mbeki with exceptional intellect who made the everlasting historic living and morally and intellectually glowing and radiant message I am an African. Aste Menelik succeeded to lead the Adwa battle for Africa just as in our time our exceptionally intellectually gifted Thabo Mbeki challenges us all Africans to be first and foremost to be, do, act and behave as Africans and make our African identity the highway to realise Africa's full agency so that Africa never fails or falls ever again.. Africans should also know that Europeans did not tame elephants, but African empires and kingdoms all used elephants and rhinos in battles and this is not a history told or taught in schools in order to dominate and claim ownership over the animals in the national parks, even the oxalmite empire and Congo Empires used war elephants as well as the history of Shaka Lulu using elephants in the bull horns formation which was not just a formation of soldiers but mounted bull elephants

Ethiopia's claim of being the only country (or one of two) in Africa to never be colonized came at the expense of Eritrea's sovereignty and independence. In 1889, the Italians signed the Treaty of Wuchale with then Ethiopian king Menelik II who essentially granted Eritrea to Italy in exchange for recognition of Ethiopian sovereignty. Italy also promised Menelik II financial assistance and military supplies. Eventually, Ethiopia did defeat Italy in the battle of Adwa (approx. 100,000 Ethiopians vs 20,000 Italians) and afterwards Menelik signed an agreement recognizing Eritrea as a sovereign state of Italy. Basically, Eritrea was used as a political tool to gain leverage with the Italian colonialist when it was convenient for Ethiopia's survival. This should explain the Derg's barbaric regime, Woyane's betrayal and the common attitude of entitlement towards Eritrea.

hect190-909 You sound like Kanye West, when he said slavery was a choice. What's next? Are you going to walk up to South Africans and ask them why they tolerated apartheid? Walk up to the Congolese and ask them why they allowed Leopold II to do what he did? We can all look back and scoff at people in the past and label them as weak after all the pain and suffering they've had to endure. I'm sure if you were around back then there wouldn't have been any atrocities committed on plant earth. You're a very arrogant human being.

Point of correction Mr. Thabo Mbeki, symbol and substance both matter. You must proactively dismantle both the symbols and substances relics etc., of slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and neocolonialism. These symbols and substances of wrongs cannot be perpetuated into perpetuity. The object is to incrementally decrease decrease decrease until they are totally expunged in our memory and our lives. They become forgotten history in the archives. That is the best strategy Sir. To that extent, I respectfully disagree with you. Slavery, colonialism brutally sacked African culture and traditions. Reinstating Africa demands removing all of those structures.
