🇰🇵 Thae Yong-ho: Interview with a North Korean defector l 101 East

Thae Yong-ho, the former North Korean deputy ambassador to the UK, defected to South Korea with his family in 2016. He remains the highest-ranking diplomat ever to defect from North Korea.
In an interview with 101 East reporter Mary Ann Jolley in Seoul, he gives rare insights into the inner workings of the Kim Jong-un regime. Thae believes that a people's revolution will one day bring an end to the Kim family's dynastic rule.
The family members of defectors are often targeted by the North Korean regime.
Thae reveals that he does not know the fate of his siblings. "Even though I am physically and mentally free in South Korea, I still can't get rid of this nightmare of my family members," he says.

He is actually very eleborate in his speech for a non-native speaker with perfect grammar and a wide vocabulary, he just uses "you know" a lot because he needs a bit more time to string together sentences as English probably doesn't come as natural to him as his native tongue. He's definitely not inpolite as you suggested.....

I do this is Portuguese, too...I unknowingly tack "sabe" or "you know" onto the end of phrases to gain a second to think of a word and loosen myself up. Remembering little bouncy verbal tics like that would help my fluency by keeping me grounded in the rhythms of speaking out loud, instead of getting lost in the conjugation tables in my head...but, sometimes I would fixate on just one of those phrases and it would start to sound weird. For those who are criticising his use of "You know.." It looks, to me that he says "You know" not because he lacks articulation in English but because he genuinely wants to convey to his hearer that he appreciates that they are intelligent enough to already know the information he is giving. In other words it's a mark of respect. "You know" is used commonly by native speakers and it's way better than "erh" or "eh. 2. Point: Did anyone notice that in the question from the interviewer: Do you think a compromise would work - do you think it will stop this nuclear program? In the answer Mr. Thae gave was misinterpreted on the last word of the subtitles of that answer - please listen again anyone who has a good ear. For me, the last word was "trap" not "threat". Mr. Thae said".....So that is really a dangerous trap." - not "threat". To the Interviewer: Please next time, don't state the obvious in almost every question you ask. For example, "You defected, I guess to find freedom......." Do you think he defected because he wanted to listen to K-POP?

When he defected he also had to make some extremely difficult decisions, like his family being locked away and being possibly caught and sent back and having to live in a society that’s the opposite from how he once did. With freedoms comes great responsibility. His freedom isn’t absolute, there was sacrifice.

I am a language teacher, and to those of you who criticize his English, let me tell you that he speaks better than most natives (certainly better than most Americans and Australians) and I am sure that your Korean (or any foreign language for that matter) skills are non-existent. In fact, this was among his first interviews in English about this sensitive topic. There is another interview on Asian Boss where he speaks very very well, without "saying you know a thousand times" (or should I say "de o mie de ori" Tudor Costache?). So please, stop criticizing, he reads more than most of you, whose only contact with English is probably the 3 or 4 incoherent sentences that your friends post on their Facebook accounts.

It is only for high-level children of people in higher ranks of the Worker's Party or people selected to take on jobs where a foreign language is needed. Children in Pyongyang would be the only ones with the possibility of being taught some English. The North Korean government doesn't want their citizens speaking different languages. Different languages introduce you to different cultures and ways of thinking, it allows more open communication to foreigners or understanding foreign media. The North Korean regime relies upon an ignorant populace.

English is not my first language and I remember, before i became fully fluent, that i needed the "uhh" and the "you know" or in my case "like", because that helped me organize my ideas in the proper order to say it in English. It is hard to think in one language and speak another. Once I started to think in English my native language started to sound awkward, because i had to reorganize everything in my mind to say it properly. So the man needs his "uuuh" and "you know" to say things properly, especially in an interview setting.
