Many words in Thai are one syllable. One word can have 5 meanings based upon tone. The reason it seems like you hear the same sound 5 times is because of its tone, too help indicate its meaning. This also goes true for vowels. Their 9 vowel sounds are paired in "short" and "long" versions indicate different meanings, adding up to 18 vowel sounds. Ka (cut short). Kaaa (Held longer) Yes, it's a challenging as learning any other languages subtleties. It confused the heck out of me, but context makes a world of difference in figuring it out. I agree, its like learning English in a way, you can see something, sow something, saw something or talk about the sea as in ocean, with a certain accent they can all sound the same. but judging on context and what you are talking about its always going to make sense, like the amount of theys there are and their/there Thai people would find that really hard to get used to, its all about the accent/tone you put into it and context its in. when you hear Thai people speak you don't just hear "to, to, to, to ,tho" because of the tones they use for each "tho" like we do with saw and see, it makes it sound understandable one you know and get used to the language, if not, then how would they know it themselves. all in all I agree with you I just felt the need to say all of that although it was quite unnecessary.
