If you are new to Thailand this is a good example of the kind of things that happen because in Thailand the various branches of government don't cooperate and usually thats to the detrimate of the Thai people and us as guests here. It insures that everything is not what seems, that there is confusion and ensures many will be caught out on one thing or another and then have to pay some fine or whatever it ios they want, to deport you or what ever. I just went to immigration out here in Isaan and there is one officer who's technique is to garble her words, she doesnt open her mouth properly or hardly at all and then when you get information from her its invariably wrong. For example I asked for confrmation that as my 90 day report date was going to be towards the middle of November if that was the earliest date that I could apply for another year extension. She says "No, you can apply November 1." I said, "The last five years I had to wait till my 90 day extension was up, so really is that corrct? I can re-apply Novemeber 1st?" "Yes." "Nov 1st?" "yes" Of course that is a standard polite Thai way to respond to questions just yes for everything, so I am not going to follow her advice I am going to play it safer than she advises and thats what you have to do all the time or get caught out. My spidey sense tells me, I'll go to immigration Nov 1st and they will say, "No, not yet." Of course its not an issue for most people but I have to keep a ceratin amount in my bank account for 3 months prior, it must be held above 400,000 baht. I need to go to bangkok and buy many much needed items, if I listen to this officer, Id go down there and do that with just enough money left in my bank account. Id have a problem. You have to reaslly think about what you are doing and what you are being told to do and that actually you have to get stamps every six months with a five year stay visa, well, thats why that visa was a complete non-starter with me when they wheeled it out in the media, I was like, "yeah, right."

Embassies are making up the rules as they go. For example, the DTA was touted to be 10,000 baht for the application fee. The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra Australia is charging currently $600 AUD for the application, which at the current THB/AUD exchange of 23BHT to the dollar rate equates to 13800 baht. So much for consistency.

Same here. I just got my DTV visa through the NYC Embassy in the US. I paid $400 USD (13,600 baht). Not a bad deal if I can actually get 5 years out of it.
