Thanks for this video. I visited Thailand last year and although I know how to count and know some food dishes I didn't know any classifiers. So ordering stuff was just saying the amount and name. Now i can sound more native ;) Chinese is kinda the same we also use different classifiers for objects.

Thank you for this lesson. I'm understanding more clearly now, after our Thailand trip. We just got back from 2 weeks in Thailand. Your lessons helped so much, not just understanding the language, but also the culture. I referred to you and your lessons a number of times ("My Thai teacher, Mod, said.... "). :) And Sangkron went really well with the little children - Thais are so sweet with children. The Thai people are wonderful - inviting us into their corner water fights (Tubs with big ice blocks) where we soak each pickup water "army"!!! They would continue to pour me Hong Thong until I would say "NO MORE". My 6 1/2 year old said she wished we could do Sangkron every week. We'll be going back in February 2015. I'll have to study harder - already the 2 1/2 year old speaks better Thai than me! Thank you again Mod.

In Lao language we can use "unn" and it pretty much applies to any object. For example: "Yok dai kra pong nam Pepsi song unn" means I want two cans of Pepsi. Perhaps this is wrong technically but it's easy to use and no Thai or Lao person will actually correct you because they'd understand what you're saying.
@spesterwecial
@spesterwecial 7 жыл бұрын
blindthief This is true in Thai also-the generic classifier for unknown things is "aan" (อัน). I find that people do often correct you, gently, by repeating what you said as if to confirm it, but substituting the correct classifier. This is quite helpful for learning the proper ones :-)

I thought you put the number after the classifier when the number was 1. For example, Aow cola kuat neung. Am I incorrect?
@ThaiwithMod
@ThaiwithMod 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. We do that indeed, but it is not the same tone as number one. Number "1" is หนึ่ง nùeng (low tone). When the quantity is just one, we use the word นึง /nueng/ (middile tone) after the classifier. :)

2000ViperGTS Let me say further, the classifier is not used with 1 in real Thai from ym 6 months there. For example, let's say cat. meow see deur for 4 cats, but with 1 cat just meow or meow neung is used.
@minzungopa
@minzungopa 6 жыл бұрын
2000ViperGTS Obviously you have learned the wrong thai all along. No offense. But nobody in Thailand would say maew neung for sure because maew is not a classifier on its own. We say Maew tua neung or maew neung tua with neung-s in diffrent phrases taking different tones

English has classifiers for uncountable nouns - 'loaf' of bread, 'slice' of bread, etc. You don't just ask for a bread. It's simply that Thai has classifiers for all nouns, countable and uncountable. In many European languages you need to learn the gender and definite article for nouns. In Thai you should try to remember the classifier for each noun, but in practical terms you remember the classifiers that are used most commonly.

@milkzii
@milkzii 8 жыл бұрын
There're many Thai people say "Keen" instead of " Dhum" but actually it's incorrect. The correct is Dhum. This rule is same as English grammar. It's absolutely clear. Keen(eat) , Dhum(drink) But if you say "Keen nam " don't worry Thai people will always understand because they use it too. I recommended you use Keen with foods and Dhum with drinks. That's more polite and definitely correct.

Kruu Mod, how about foods that don't come on plates or bowls. Like street food, that you usually get in plastic bags. I remember I wanted to order a few sticks of skewered bbq chicken (similar to yakitori) or sausages and meatballs on sticks. That time I ordered anyways, but in my mind I was thinking about the correct way to say it, I just didn't know what classifier to use. And also in another case, is there any ways to say "A serving of..." / "A portion of..."? :)
@milkzii

If you want to buy some street foods, for example BBQ chicken sticks as you said. You can use classifier follow of that food. Exp. May I have 3 sticks of BBQ,please? K̄hx sụ̄̂x BBQ s̄ām mị̂ khrạb. So "mị̂ " is classifier of these BBQ.

You have to understand that classifier is not the word for containers. There isn't such a concept in English so it's probably a little difficult for you to understand. Basically, you have to add a classifier to every tangible noun if you want to talk about their quantity. In English, you just add the number before the noun but in Thai you say the noun then the number and lastly the classifier

Classifiers in Thai are actually something that used to indicate the characteristic of nouns that are countable, like every money has its currency, it the same for every nouns in Thai has its classifiers to tell its characteristic or quality. As for Bai(ใบ) or Bai Mai(ใบไม้), it means leaf, it indicate characteristic of something similar of a leaf, I don't really know why we used Bai for a bag, I guess maybe a bag look like a folded leaf, some of them don't really indicate theirs characteristic you just have to remember each of them individually.

Why use your name when you say I? Can't we just say or use "phom" or in your case "chan/dichan"? I'm confused.
@minzungopa
@minzungopa 6 жыл бұрын
In spoken language, Thai people, especially women, can use nicknames for I. Chan would sound too literary and dichan would sound too formal. But if Thai women want to sound respectful like when they talk to older people or supervisors they would use Noo หนู. So, Chan and dichan are more like a textook thing. But men can always use phom despite the level of conversation (of course when talk to close friends most Thai will use koo and meung instead)

@milkzii

Both sentences are correct. kaw-nam-sam -kuat-noi-kharp = I would like 3 bottles of water,please. kaw-nam-sam-kuat-dai-mai-kharp = Can I have 3 bottles of water,please? I recommended you use "noi-kharp" That's enough polite to request somethings. Because "dai-mai-kharp " in Thai is actually means like ....you can or you can't. ( Asking for permission) And in restaurant you are customer and don't need to asking for permission like that. It's a bit different than English. But " noi-kharp " is means your purpose is clearly. ( requests) Anyway no need to be serious. Choose whichever you like.

Deum is the more formal, official word for "to drink". In normal everyday speech gin is used for both "to eat" and "to drink" by most Thais.

In this case both sentences are actually same meaning. You can use koor instead of ou sometimes. It depends on the situation. Koor means ask for. Ou means take.
