Countries are generally in competition with each other for tourist dollars, corporate dollars, etc. Wouldn’t it make sense to pay attention to what they’re doing in order to maintain an advantage/compete?

If Thailand allowed foreigners to purchase land in their own name I seriously doubt there would a mass migration of foreigners rushing to Thailand to purchase land so why are the Thais so paranoid or xenophobic about foreign ownership? I understand there must be controls and quotas on foreign ownership but where I come from Thais or anyone else can purchase a house or land in their own name after a qualifying period and meeting certain criteria. Thailand could easily do the same by allowing foreigners to buy land only of a certain size [ say one Rai ] which can be used for domestic purposes only. If allowed I would buy a block of land and build a house but until then I will continue to pay rent. I am not about to put my hard earned into land that is not in my name.
