"Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is uncommonly talented, academically trained in oriental epigraphy, has advanced degrees in Pali and Sanskrit (languages) and has a doctorate in development education. "We all hope that we could bring peace to this world and no one would use deadly weapons to destroy others. Now there are, in many parts of the world, turmoil and disorder. I hope we can join hands in solving these problems - how, I do not know. We also wish that individuals and communities will prosper and have the good opportunity to develop their well being. It should be done in any form of political development, economic development or social development."

STORYLINE:
Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was awarded the 2004 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on Saturday.
At a ceremony held in New Delhi, Congress Party Leader Sonia Gandhi complimented the princess her for community work in the fields of education, health care, environmental protection and child development, and said she symbolised the values which the late Indira Gandhi stood for.
Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam also honoured the Thai Princess, saying her development work among rural communities should be emulated.
The annual award is given by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, headed by Indira's daughter-in law Sonia Gandhi, to commemorate the late prime minister's birthday.
The Thai princess is well-known for her work among underprivileged children, in rural development, and her activities to promote and preserve the rich Thai culture .
In her acceptance speech, she said she had been guided by her parents in her initiatives in Thailand towards sustainable development and environmental protection.
She appealed to people to work jointly for peace and development.
Also present at the ceremony was New Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit, who later announced that Afghan President Hamid Karzai had been chosen for the Indira Gandhi Peace prize for 2005.
