Thai Tiger Temple Defends Itself Amid Controversy

The Indochinese tiger is currently listed as an endangered species - on the brink of extinction. Only a few hundred still exist in the wild. But one place in Thailand has provided a sanctuary for tigers, and claims to have learned how to tame the beast - but its claims have drawn some controversy. At the beginning of 2015, the temple was raided by the Thai Police, after reports that it was involved in trafficking tigers and tiger parts. But the police decided not to bring charges. Tony Cheng travelled to Kanchanaburi, Thailand to investigate.

Right? Unfortunately that is not what this place was. But one does wonder how many generations it would take for domestication to begin in big cats. Obviously the first few wont do shit but what could 20 or 30 generations in captivity do?

In late-May 2016, police and wildlife officials began an operation to remove all living tigers at Tiger Temple. During the operation, officials found over 40 tiger cub corpses as well as numerous body parts from other animals preserved in freezers. According to a representative of the Department of National Parks, the tiger cubs had died only a short time before the raid. The temple, however, had not reported the birth of any tigers for months. This was seen as a sign for hidden illegal breeding. Some twelve living hornbills were also confiscated as being possessed without a license.[17] The abbot's secretary was stopped from leaving the site with over 1000 amulets containing pieces of tiger skin, two whole tiger skins, and nine or ten tiger fangs.[18] He and four other persons are investigated for alleged wildlife smuggling.[19] The temple was closed to the public at the beginning of the raid. On 3 June, another thirty carcasses of tiger cubs were found in containers with English-language labels, suggesting that they might have been for sale. In 2020 the site was a rundown area with only one lion still on the property, along with many deer and wild boar. The days of 400 visitors a day are over and the tracks are in poor repair. Only 5 staff remain to tend the animals still living there.

My guess is that it's not spirit of the monks nor drugs - it's depression. They need to be tigers - even domestic tom cats go out an hunt. These are reconditioned prisoners. I can't claim whether it's better or worse than extinction and people arguing over it have no idea what it's like to be one of these tigers; talking as if they know. They need proper food. It seems to me (can't claim to be certain) that the food isn't drugged, it's just not nutritious. My argument is that poachers are the problem, as well as people who buy parts of tigers.

Update: The place was closed down after 40 dead tiger cubs were discovered in a freezer in the temple's kitchen freezer, along with other animal body parts including a dead bear and various other animal horns.while in another building, 20 cubs were discovered preserved in jars of formaldehyde. Allegations of wildlife trafficking prompted a raid by wildlife officials, who confiscated 137 tigers and moved them to safety in government facilities. At the time they found a huge cache of tiger parts and products on the temple grounds. A total of 86 tigers have died since they were moved from the tourist attraction known as Tiger Temple, in 2016. Thailand's park service said many had died of a virus, having been weakened by the stress of relocation. Officials also blamed genetic problems linked to inbreeding among the group. I've put a link for you to go if you want to know more about it, Tanya was there and she was interviewed throughout www.aljazeera.com/amp/indepth/features/2016/06/happened-thailand-tiger-temple-160605074332073.html www.google.com/amp/s/api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/news/2017/02/wildlife-watch-tiger-temple-monks-trafficking-zoo

I don't think so there are other places like this temple that don't do that. These Tigers have the disposition of a trained animal not a tamed animal they're used to being around people And as such they don't see them as threats. You know there's probably about at least 6000 Tigers that are kept privately as pets in America and you can actually keep them but you have to raise them from an extremely early age as in before they open their eyes I know many cat breeders that will tell you that with wildcats the smaller the cat the more aggressive and ferocious they are I was even told once that if you work with a tiger not just keep one as a pet but truly work with it they have better temperaments than most dogs

Those tigers are clearly totally spaced out on drugs. They’re getting pushed around and hardly react. No way that’s their normal behavior. Go look at the channel of Michael Jamison who has two healthy Bengals in an enclosure - they never look like this.

The phycology of the tigers mind can't be defined by what we expect, do you not realise that most of these tigers have grown up there. Strong bonds would obviously form between man and tiger, and anyways it says in the video the natural way of the tigers has been curved, and not in a violent way but just slow change.
@stevenglikin3219

+DOMINO RED- dude, your comment is pretty wrong and pointless. A tiger lying down and not reacting while being manhandled is not natural, it doesn't matter if they were raised by humans, they're still alive, so they're still supposed to act natural. Seriously check out "Michael Jamison", he raised his tigers from a very young age, and he slept with them on his bed until they got too big.

+Declan Kube- He raised them from a young age and is STILL raising them, he stopped keeping them in the house because as they grew older they lost interest in being inside the house and spent more time outside. They aren't being kept in cages, there is a small fence dividing them and the rest of the animals for the animal's safety. They have plenty of space behind that small fence and they aren't being kept chained to a pole like the tigers in this video. Also unlike the tigers in this video they actually look clean, healthy and alive. The tigers in this video look sickly, and half dead.

I saw a news report from 2016 that mentioned this place and how there were 40 dead tiger cubs that were found here. They were probably going to be sold for body parts. The tigers are drugged aswell which is why they are so calm. These people don't care about protecting tigers and only care about the money. Just because they say they are monks doesn't mean they actually care about helping the tigers.

This place was raided and closed in 2016. The monks were suspected of selling tiger body parts on the black market. I don't know if they were killed for that purpose or died of natural causes. They found tiger skins, bones, teeth, amulets made of body parts, cubs preserved in jars, more dead cubs in a freezer. I think they even caught a monk trying to escape with hundreds of body parts during the raid. The government confiscated the tigers and over half of them died in their custody.

I'm all for helping the Tigers, and I'm glad this place allows them to reproduce. However I'm not a fan of the crampt stone floors of their sleeping pens. That part isn't natural and I'm not a fan of the chain link cages, but other than that this place doesn't seem to bad. I've see Zoo's with worse conditions than this, the tigers are fed properly and are given exercise, they are allowed to socialize with other tigers and people and are allowed to reproduce. Maybe the monks could use the money they are gaining from the tourists to buy more land/get better cages or improve the flooring for the tigers. And on the premise of money, they have how many tigers on the facility? over a hundred I think they mentioned. For those who think the monks are abusing these animals for personal gain is wrong. They have to make some form of money to cover the costs of upkeep for this sanctuary, you can't take care of over a hundred breeding tigers for free it doesn't work like that. I'd like to think these monks are using the money the tourists give them to improve/take care of the tigers.

@@divine-ki3ep The place was shutdown after they found tons of tiger pelts and part as well as 40 tiger cubs corpses frozen. Supposedly the cause of the raid was because three tigers disappeared from the temple and their chips were removed. That doctor took the blame and resigned but they later found a place where more tiger parts were found as well as all the necessary stuff to butcher tigers.
