I have wanted to see a Thai Traditional Home being built for many years and today I was able to go and have a good time looking around a very big workshop. For a Thai Traditional Home to be built you first have to get hold of a lot of Teak wood. Then there is a long and time rich process to build the house. When it is all done then the house is taken to the new location and put together. The whole house is held together by Teak wood dowels. I hope you enjoy.

This is not just a Thai house, this Thai art, and as beautiful as they get, as long as the clientele is there, this man is living a Thai dream, At the end of the day he can sit back and say, I build, I create, I leave something more than a house, I have made a piece of art you live in..

Planer, jointer, table saw. I used to work all those machines at a cabinet mill over 20 years ago. I loved turning a pile of lumber into a beautiful cabinet, but turning a forest into status symbols for rich people gave me a resentment. Sometimes I miss fine woodworking and finish carpentry, but I got tired of going deaf, breathing sawdust and developing arthritis in my 30s. i work in IT now, and they're still trying to squeeze as much productivity as possible out of workers, but Das Kapital is a discussion for another place and time.

I went & seen Jim Thompson house in Bangkok once. He bought 4 teak houses in North Thailand & brought them down to Bangkok by boat & built his house but instead of doing as the Thais do & having the ornate finish on outside of the walls & the plain finish on inside he did it the other way round with the plain finish on the outside & the ornate on the inside which I think is much better. Teak really is beautiful but at 32,000 Baht a sq.m expensive when you compare it to building a more functional western style with standard western finish for around 10,000 to 12,000 Baht a sq.m.

Hi Kevin, Craftsmanship at its best, many thanks for sharing. When the dowel holes are drilled in the tenons I suspect they are ‘offset’ so that as the peg or dowel is driven home the joint will tighten up and no need for glue especially with Teaks oily properties and dimensional stability. All very interesting thank you. Buckets over you Kevin and stay cool. 😎. Anthony. 🙏🏻

Hi Kevin !!!! You did great!!!! Right on track.....FT(M)2 E-5 2nd Class Fire Control Technician-Missiles Fire Control Radar mostly....1968 to 1974 USS Albany (CG-10) TALOS 4 systems long range....4 Tartar systems short range. After that I worked for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in the...you guessed it...the Fire Control Shop from 1974 to its closure in 1995. Everything was HANDS ON and MIND ENGAGED...I loved it....was hard work...but I enjoyed the physical and mental challenge. I was the Lead Mechanic for 13 of those years..was only 47 when it closed ...am 71 now...not a day since then I don't miss it. I was surprised but only for a moment by your question....proactive engagement.....as you are very much a friendly, positive and engaging person. My "attitude" background is much the same as yours. The old expression goes that to make friends you need to be friendly. And Kindness wins every time. I was watching your video today titled "Getting Married" with your Army photos posted. I looked closely at the caption at the bottom of one with you and team mates tugging the rope. I didn't make out all of it but I did see the term "MISSILE REGIMENT" SO...looks like we had pretty much the same MOS with exception of Army vs Navy. So you had a heads up on guessing my field, though you probably had to look up the Rangefinder to guess that I was in Ordnance Radar. Maybe you were already familiar. But at least you were interested to inquire!!! I will be writing to your email soon if that is OK mine is mr dot dale dot cole at outlook dot com All the BEST

Great Job Kev! And by the way not a single Thumbs Down as of this writing. I hope most would understand that when the words "Thai Traditional Home" are used, that most Thai People do not live in one. This is a level of Craftsmanship that one pays others to do or one does for ones self no matter where in the world one lives. Me? I just want my house to meet the code and have the roof not leak. Thanks again Kev!
