In her talk, “....close, but not so close?”, Dr. Lalita explores recent developments in Myanmar and the relationship of Thai people with their close neighbour. Instead of focusing on typical history textbook influenced narrative, security issues and economic impact, she advocates approaching Burmese people as true neighbours, worth caring about and worth getting to know better.

Lalita Hanwong is a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Kasetsart University in Bangkok. She teaches modern Southeast Asian history with emphasis on Myanmar and writes a weekly article for Matichon newspaper.
Her research includes work on Hla Myint, the great economist of Myanmar and the relations between Myanmar and Thailand during the Cold War. As a columnist, she is interested in contemporary issues including democratization, ethnic relations, and the Myanmar economy.
