Pacific cross is known to deny a lot of claims. Best thing to do is just self-insure and get insurance for catastrophic care only. Some insurance agents in Thailand get referral money from certain insurers, so not all of them will necessarily have your best interests in mind.

Could be, but all you can do is search for the best one to at least hear what they say. Self insuring is possible, but a bit scary for many, especially those without a big back up nest egg. For many it's just not possible.

They all are deniers for any reason when it is a big claim. No consumer affairs or appeal rights for Expats. Plus premiums increase a lot every year. Over 70 = costs a fortune. Get car insurance that includes personal accident insurance and put 100K into a 'medical fund bank account' every year. When you have 300-400K that will cover many things in a hospital - another few years and you have most things covered. If all you have is a pension and no savings, then obviously this is tough to do - and maybe you should think again.

Thank you for the amazing channel! Every review video you create is a professional and impressive piece of research, conducted with a balanced and realistic perspective. It's truly a pleasure to watch! There's one point that perhaps could have been elaborated on in the video if relevant. Most people retiring to Thailand from developed countries already have good health insurance that covers pre-existing conditions, which they probably wouldn’t cancel. Maybe what they really need is a sort of "supplemental insurance" to cover accidents, emergencies, or even evacuation to their home country for treatment. Is this a realistic option in Thailand or does "emergencies," which should include something like a heart attack, already fall under full insurance coverage? Thank you!
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 3 күн бұрын
I think you can only get full policies in Thailand, not just a partial supplement, but only an agent would know what special plans exist for you. I think most people lose their insurance in Thailand unless just on vacation, so I'd disagree with that premise.
@RonenRadomski
@RonenRadomski 3 күн бұрын
@@RetiredGlobalLife I'm certainly not an expert in insurance matters, and this definitely requires further investigation, but it seems that any American, and probably in most parts of the world, can maintain their health insurance even if they retire and live permanently in Thailand. This is very significant for someone with a medical history that probably be excluded in Thailand, and it's likely possible to get health insurance in Thailand with the coverages I mentioned. The package might be more expensive, but in the case of a medical history, it could be a good option and is certainly worth mentioning in the review.

I only use the public hospital here in Hua Hin. It’s great! And using my pink card to get set up actually gave me even bigger discounts! My Thai wife delivered our baby there 6 weeks early. Emergency C section and 4 weeks in the NICU cost a total of 60 baht! My only additional cost was a very nice large private room for my wife for 3 night which cost $140! I’m in great health at 65 so I just self insure here for now. I’m in the States often and also have my Medicare A and B should I need anything done there. If I travel elsewhere I just buy travel insurance.

At 70 I am quite fit and focused on healthy living. Problem with turning 70 is that health insurance companies statistically assess me as high risk for major health issues so want to charge accordingly. In Thailand, if I can even get coverage at my age, it would be difficult to justify the cost. So $650/yr to get a visa sounds pretty good to me even if the insurance deductible is huge.

Great video. Thanks. I am 63 and purchased an insurance with Cigna 2 years ago (Outpatient only with deductable). It wasn't cheap, but the price seemed OK. Less than 3kUSD. However, turns out they raise their tariffs on a yearly basis by 13%. If I project that into the future, the cost would triple in 10 years and triple again 9 years down the road. So once I would get 80 years old, the tarif would be around 25,000 USD per year and by then I would have paid almost 200k accumulated. Any thoughts on this? What is your expertience with tarif increases?
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 3 күн бұрын
I think all companies raise it a bit each year but 13% is hefty. Bigger increases are usually if you cost them a lot with claims. I don't know if it would continue every year. Some companies are more known for rate increases than others.

@RetiredGlobalLife - the difference between a Non O visa and a Non OA visa is whether you are applying in Thailand. You cannot apply for a Non O visa outside Thailand, you can only apply for the Non OA instead. Thus the insurance coverage requirement _always_ applies when applying for a Non O (really, a non OA) visa in your home country. A common trick to circumvent the insurance requirement of the Non OA visa is to travel to Thailand on a tourist visa and then apply for the Non O visa upon arrival in Thailand.
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 3 күн бұрын
Ah, darn, you are right. I always confuse that aspect of the non-OA vs non-O, it is the non-OA that you can apply for either way. Thanks and take care.

Very informative video without being too lengthy, thank you! I'm looking at healthcare insurance right now and one thing I would mention right off the bat is Pacific Cross is a provider and Pacific Prime is a broker....so confusing for beginners. Do you recommend an agent in Pattaya? And did you drop your Medicae Plan Part B in the USA? I've purchased a condo in Pattaya to retire full-time and my 65th birthday is 3 months away where you have to sign up for Medicare Part A (free) which I'll do, but Part B ($185 per month) I'll probably say no to as my plan is to stay here forever and put that money towards a great plan here. Someone mentioned the tragic LA fires....I thought immediately that is just like the insurance over here that can cover the world....EXCEPT THE USA as it's too costly for coverage there. Fire insurance companies said LA is to costly to cover them anymore and they have caps. Thailand is a breath of fresh air!
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 5 күн бұрын
Personally I keep my part B just in case one day I have some terrible issue beyond Thai insurance and I need to return to the USA, such as a pre-existing condition, or if my life plans change and I don't want the lifetime part B penalty. Natt, the agent in the video, serves all of Thailand and I works in the Pattaya office of his company.

Hey Randy, a very timely vlog for me. I have been scheming my way from here(US) to Thailand for some time. I am well past the 80 year mark, and plan to self insure. Do you know if and what the requirements are to do that. All on the up and up. I don't want to start off being crosswise with the government. Thank you for your information rich channel. Oh yeah.. Welcome to the world of henpecked husbands. LOL
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 4 күн бұрын
Well, there are no requirements to self insure re minimum amount. Self insuraing does not meet visa requirements for those that require it, so you will need a throwaway policy to satisfy it, or get a visa that does not have a health insurance requirement. It is just a question of how much you want banked in case of an emergency. No henpicking so far, haha, but the marriage is still new...

Healthcare and health insurance is nothing to underestimate in Thailand. I can understand wanting to self insurance. Nevertheless, even if I was self insured, I would purchase accident insurance. Why, because it’s dirt dirt cheap. Moreover, if you broke your ankle walking down the street, you covered. Crossing the street hit by a car you’re covered. Slipped in the shower and cracked open your head, you’re covered. Just remember unintentional injuries is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. For me to self insure I would like $300K USD for coverage. Did I say accident insurance was dirt cheap.

@@Bhatmann I appreciate your input. It begs the question: What sort of hospitalization/medical situation would present the need of 10,000,000 baht? I am well into my 80's and will not undergo any major treatment, to enrich the medical establishment, to extend my breathing for another 10 - 30 days. An accident is unpredictable, therefore I will definitely look into that insurance and compare cost/benefit. I have no desire to vegetate and death is but a step. Why would I possibly give my estate to a governmental body instead of my heirs?

If you watch the whole video, or look in the description, I give the name of the agent I interview in the video. He's really good. And he can answer your two questions much better than me! (:

I used World Nomad travel Insurance. For 6 months in Thailand back in 2017 it was $600usd at 55 of age. Including motorbike, scuba, diving and skydiving. lol It’s easy to get a quote online from them.

Health insurance in my opinion is vital if you live here. Not all of us have millions of baht in bank & can afford to have a big deductible.. Getting cover obviously can vary in price / level of cover , luckily so far I’m healthy I’m coming up to 61.. I have P Cross but ideally need a higher level of cover , once you in the system it helps too . I carry my insurance company card with me & my local hospital has a copy on my file .. my main big concern though is having something serious , the cover & money running out 😢..

Thank you! Most Thai insurers are there for Thai residents. I don't know the company you mentioned but Natt could give you better feedback. You might want travel insurance if only there for 6 months.

Randy, there is some good information here, however, saying there is compatible or (just as nice) medical treatment in Thai as the US, for more serious medical needs, is misleading. The US is one of the cutting edge medical research countries with heavily funded institutions. If your child has neuroblastoma, your wife has bone cancer, your husband has prostate cancer, or you need an organ transplant, I would pray I’m in the US. A friend with prostate cancer went to Bangkok Hospital in BKK. He asked about HIFU treatment: the doc said there is one hospital in BKK doing HIFU. There are hundreds who do HIFU in the US, plus the other 10+ kinds of ablation therapy. Also, the volume at US hospitals doing HIFU, starting 10 years ago, or other involved medical treatments, has hundreds if not thousands of patients. The skill at some US institutions, the ongoing clinical research, and clinical trails far outpace Thailand. There is no one coming to Thailand’s for a cutting edge medical education but you know Thai’s are certainly going to the US and beyond. As much as I love Thailand, this issue will not change anytime soon. Also, the language barrier exists at Thai hospitals, and culturally, the conversations can lack detail and specificity. There’s something about saving face that does not allow for criticizing doctors, nurses and the Thai medical system. Well I sure agree with your last sentence! (: As far as the rest, I can't comment on very rare treatments you bring up, Thailand vs USA, so you could be right, but in the issues most of us face, even serious, such as heart attacks, etc., I have full confidence in Thailand. Because of my channel I meet and talk to thousands of people to get feedback on issues and expats' comments re med care here is overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for your comment and take care.

I have been thinking about you lately now that Robert F Kennedy will be taking over at HHS and the new Department of Government Efficiency looking for ways to cut waste. I keep thinking about your vlog last year about legislation you were putting forward to try and get Medicare to cover expats in foreign countries. What are your thoughts about the possibilities of this getting through with a change in leadership?

My premium means nothing to you so should not guide you. It is based not just on my age and health, but what kind of policy and coverage I want. So I could get a policy for $700 a year or $5,000 a year. You just need to choose what is best for you.

Thumbs up because there is some good info here but i would love to see you be a little more balanced instead of focusing on negatives of USA and ignoring any negatives of Thailand. I think you are influencing some people against their own best interest. What is the point of quoting high sticker price of care in USA when almost nobody ever pays that? The video really glosses over the fact that insurance prices in thailand increase exponentially after 65 or as soon as you develop any prexisting conditions. If you are 65+, the healthcare is going to be WAY cheaper in USA for anything serious, 99% of the time, because you have medicare. And Thailand doesnt offer the new drugs or treatments that may save your life. I think it's hard to make a good case for people 70+ actually having a lower cost of living in Thailand once insurance costs start rocketing up.
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 3 күн бұрын
If you are seriously ill and don't have insurance then it makes sense to be in your home country if it provides you something like Medicare in the US. But not every country has that. And I know many elderly people (older than me, haha) who never plan to leave Thailand, so medical costs are just one issue. Take care.
