So i came to Pattaya for the first time in May earlier this year for 2 weeks. And my spending money was 1.7-1.8k (Pounds) i did do a night in Loh Kan. And did so many day trips & went out every night. It is a lot of money to go out there and have a holiday. But honestly i absolutely do not regret spending that money. I learned a lot, and had the best experience of my life.

It's a common misconception that Thailand is "dirt cheap". Back in early 2000s the exchange rate to the British pound was around 70 and a beer could be bought for 40-75 baht. Now the exchange rate is around 40 and a beer can be in excess of 90 baht. Inflation along with poor exchange rate has made Thailand anything but cheap. Still love it though 😂

Yeah its a double hit price's doubled money halved. On top of that with British Airways having dropped out of the Thai Air routes flights have sky rocketed. I blame net zero for that one. I expect a beer is pushing B200 in a agogo now.

@Whalewraith
@Whalewraith 11 ай бұрын
@@FOCUSonASIA13 that's street level though, you can expect something around 200 in a agogo and crucially we drink pints at home not half measures. I never buy small bottles at home. So for comparison 2x = pint in a gogo 400, (maybe slightly less but they expect the change any how). Say £9.50 compared to £3 at home. Even the street price works out to about £5. Even worse if you buy a girl a drink and she does the double charge cola and Tequila thing add on another £10. Not complaining, just responding to Thailand is no longer cheap.

I think that you will find that the rental price increase in Bangkok also reflects a change in standard from simple apartment buildings to more flash condos. At least it appears that way to me having lived in Bangkok for 13 years (without a single rental price increase).

Interesting to hear your analysis as I just returned from Bangkok yesterday after not visiting for 8 years. I definitely felt things were more expensive but i also thought the quality of many things was much higher than before. We stayed in very nice boutique style hotels (wife’s choice) for about $70/nt. including a very nice breakfast. The Thai people in general also looked better off so it’s good to see that their growing economy is raising the standard of living. It’s also worth noting that other than the USD, most currencies are near a two decade low. While the Thai baht has hardly changed against the USD.

It's essential to maintain a budget and anticipate that expenses might be double what you expect. This way, you can continue saving even during retirement. Individuals should consider increasing their income during their careers and saving more for retirement. I'm grateful I didn't squander my earnings, and now I can comfortably retire in various Asian destinations with a monthly budget of $2500 as a single person.

I think your advice on buying condos here is spot on. The build quality is not good, lots of plumbing issues etc, and if you need to unload it and get your money fast forget about it. Condos sit for sale for years. You can rent at great rates if you do a 6 month or 1 year lease. Hotels have gotten more expensive for sure but deals are still out there with a bit of research.

I can remember in early 1980s, could walk into a soapy, get a lady for 200 baht for 24 hours (ie 24 hours), cook, clean, buy food, translate, as well boom boom all day, all night full GFE etc for 200 baht. Many people simply took ladies on holidays to Phuket and Koh Samui etc for simply the price of providing the holiday. I remember looking at some economic data on prices in Thailand going back to WWII. The price of short time in 1950 was 50 satang (1/2 baht). Now it is about 3,000 baht ie a 6,000 times the price. 😂 I am pretty sure that wages in the UK, US, Australia etc have not increase by 6,000 times. 😂

I'm living on Samui. 15 months ago you could rent a 2-3 bedroom sea view villa for around $1500 per month. Now the same villa is $3000+ per month. Most "farang" rentals have doubled and tripled in price. If you really want to be on the cheap and don't mind losing some western comforts, I'd suggest looking at places the locals rent. On the island, they're typically around 5000 baht ($142) per month.

At one point the baht went up to 80 for the pound in the early 2000s. Once you get away from poplar tourist destinations like BKK , Samui and Phuket and you see the big beer prices in the country and issan become cheaper than the small beer prices in the tourist destinations. In 2010 in Samui one of the top night clubs were charging 250 for a small Singha. and that was 13 years ago. They get greedy.

So much depends on the choices that you make. In the last two months I have paid between 30 baht and 250 baht for a pork panang curry. The 30 baht one was much better but it was at a street food stall that only had a Thai language menu. Thai food mostly has an inverse price law in relation to quality. Generally the more you pay the worse the food within reason.

@vassanab4243

I think the 30 bath with only Thai menu is the ‘real’ Thai food while the English menu with high price is unauthentic Thai food for the tourist and the business owner are mostly not Thai (westerners/Chinese) who have big money to rent expensive places in tourist area and hire cheap immigrant from neighbor countries like Laos, Myanmar who don’t really know how to cook Thai food properly. Btw the reason why the street food are cheap is because the street vendors don’t pay income tax and expensive rent fee, no license fee, hygiene check whatsoever, only cost maybe some bribe for the police to let them sell on street. My two cent is if you want quality, bang for buck food, don’t go to the place that have only English menu. You are in the country that never been colonized by any western country and majority of Thai people don’t speak English so how it can have English menu? The only reason is it’s for the tourists. And you can find better quality when pay higher by just visit any restaurants in shopping malls, just look around and you see most of the customers are the local then it’s ok.

I was there in 2017 and paid right around $100 usd for a Honda pcx150 per month , was just in Phuket over this past winter for three months and paid 30,000 baht for same scooter ( about $300 usd per month )… so the price of scooter rentals ,at least in my case …. Thailand is not really that cheap the price have been increasing over the years. If you want to eat street food everyday and live in a dirty hostel on KSR then maybe its cheap but if you are anywhere outside of the backpacker areas its nearly as expensive as some western cities. I have been going to Thailand for 20 plus years and every time I go back prices are up. The only relative "deal" is the rent for condos and hotels but everything else is not a bargain it once was.

I'm in Chiang Mai, so way cheaper here, but I still check the prices before ordering, before sitting down. I would not pay 180 Baht for a Pad Thai or a beer, as there are so many other options. If more of us voted with out wallets & feet maybe some places would re-consider their prices. Of course different if a High End restaurant. I still get great meals for 40-50 Baht everywhere in CM. Many places beers are only 15-20 Baht more than 7/11 for large bottle.

This week I was given an example of this too.... though it applies to where you live. 34 years ago in Phuket I could get a haircut and shaved with head massage ear cleaning 50B. Keep in mind this was 34 years ago. Same shop now charges 300B no shave, ear cleaning or head neck massage.... But if you move to a rural area everything changes. Near the krabi boat lagoon marina I get a decent cut and shave 60B.... 20 kilometres away in krabi town near the old market 200B cut no shave. This applies to everything. 2 km from the marina I rent a Thai style house 1bed bathroom living room 2500B. Kabi town the same place will be 8000 to 12000. There's decent looking foreigner owned house in the vicinity for sale 2.5m.... In town 10m+ Thailand as other countries has dual prices. If I walk in a shop and speak English I will often find myself paying extra... when I speak Thai more often than not I get Thai prices and a gracious exchange of pleasantries.

@@keisone depends on when you book a room also. Last Sept I stayed in a room in BKK for 13 usd a night. No breakfast, no pool but room was nice. I booked a few months in advance as everything was just opening up after the pandemic. Was about a 10 minute walk to BTS plenty of food options near by. Obviously the low price concerned me but if I had to walk away from it the loss wasn't that great. However, I would happily stay there again when the price is right. This March i book 5 days in Pattaya for a November 2023 stay. Again, 13 usd a night, no breakfast, no pool. I've stayed there before and the room was clean with plenty of hot water. About 10 minute walk to walking street, grocery store about a 5 minute walk. If you can plan ahead you can still get some pretty good deals. Without checking exact price I've got 10 days in Bkk also in November and I'm not paying over 35 usd for any of them. And they have pools with breakfast included.

I think it’s still cheap compared to the west but the exchange rate has made it less desirable, I can remember the exchange rate from Australia was in the low 30s now it’s the low 20s , To convert, $100 Australian would get you over 3000 baht not it’s not much over 2000 baht , massive difference

Just stayed in Bangkok for 15 days and today flying to Japan. I think the biggest misconception or scam depends how you see it is the food portions are tiny even compared to other neighbouring countries. My wife is Chinese and even she commented on the portion size. A meal which costs 100 baht is really 200 baht if you compare like for like what you would get in the UK. Thailand is a great country but it’s definitely not as good value as it was in the past. It’s lost it’s edge and 20 years ago it was number one in south east Asia but now it’s lost it’s edge.

I was just there recently for 2 weeks and I itemized everything I bought. I still find hotels, good restaurants a lot cheaper than where I live which is Tokyo even with a weak yen. My wife who gets beauty treatment done could fund the whole trip with cost savings if you were to do the same thing in Tokyo. Agree though that food and drink prices have increased. on another note when back to MBK after they had refurbished it. Was way better before when it was chaotic. Just like any other mall now. Will not go back there again. Prices weren't that cheap either there and they didn't like to offer much discount.

The question of whether to buy real estate in Thailand is a tough one. At first blush, the answer appears to be an obvious 'no' because it's so cheap to rent. But how long will cheap rents last? The same thing that has happened to hotel prices could happen to rents. This idyllic lifestyle of renting in Thailand for very cheap is unlikely to last forever. If you were to buy a house/condo for cash, at least you know that you have locked in your housing costs for good.

Keis - The inflation rates you cite may look significant in Thailand, especially if wages are not increasing as well, but compared to the West, Thailand is still a very good bargain. Example, paying about $50 per night for a hotel in Bangkok is extremely reasonable compared to New York City or Melbourne. It’s all relative, my friend! Enjoying your videos. Take care, Mark O in the U.S.

And lm happy l bought😅.as it has paid for it self over 17 years but if you are not planning on staying long term l suggest just rent. I moved to bangkok for a year and rented there and rented my condo for one year juring that time😊 paying for 80 percent of my rent in bangkok . But after a year in bangkok l decided that was enough of the big city l can go stay there when I want big city life for one week trips. I prefer pratamnak area to long term live.
